Your Side of the Bed

You nuzzled into Taehyung's warmth, wishing you could fall asleep as easily as he had. Taehyung was always so content and happy with you. He acted as if you'd hung the moon and the stars,but you were pretty sure he was the one who'd done that. You rolled away from him onto your side and stared at the wall, wishing for the sweet reprieve of sleep. You knew exactly why you couldn't sleep and you hated it. You hated that as much as you loved Tae, you couldn't quit missing someone else, loving someone else. You knew you needed to let go, but so far you hadn't been able to. Closing your eyes again, you finally drifted off into a fitful sleep.

"Jin!" you squealed as threw you over his shoulder and spun around. Your laughter mixed as he spun a couple more times with you. Jin made his way to your bedroom and flopped you onto the bed, eliciting more giggles from you when he flopped down beside you. You scooched closer to him, wrapping your arms around his middle and burying your face in his chest. You smiled into his chest, basking in his warmth and his pleasant scent. His arms wrapped around you and held you tight. He pressed a kiss to the top of your head and you remembered why you loved it so much when Jin spent the night.

"I love you, Y/N," he whispered softly as you drifted off to sleep.

Stretching your arm, you reached toward Jin's side of the bed, but you were met with cool sheets instead of his warm body. Opening your eyes you looked around your room and noticed Taehyung's shirt from last night was still slung over your desk chair. You both hated and loved your memories with Jin resurfacing during your dreams. You always had this moment when you woke up where you thought you were still with Jin. It was torturous and heavenly to once again be able to bask in his love and affection, even if only for a moment. Heaving a sigh, you rolled yourself out of bed and padded to the kitchen, where Taehyung was standing shirtless at the stove making breakfast. You walked up behind him and wrapped your arms around his waist, resting your cheek on his back.

"Smells good," you mumbled. He placed one of his much larger hands over your smaller ones. You could practically hear the smile in his voice when he answered you, "Thank you, baby! It seemed like you didn't sleep well last night so I wanted to do something nice for you."

You really didn't deserve Taehyung. He was so sweet and thoughtful. When he could see you were struggling he never pushed, he just let you be. You knew it had to hurt him; knowing that sometimes there was someone else on your mind. You couldn't stand to hurt him and had tried to persuade him to find someone better, someone that could give him their whole heart, not just part of it. He claimed to not care that there was part of you that still belonged to someone else. You could see it in his eyes though sometimes when you woke up crying in the night; he didn't even have to ask, he always knew. He never failed to pull you close and murmur reassurances in your ear until you were calm enough to sleep.

"I don't deserve you," you whispered, tears welling up in your eyes. Taehyung turned the stove off and turned in your arms. He cupped your face, urging you to look him in the eyes.

"Y/N," he said softly. "We talked about this. Yes, you do. You can't help that you still have love in your heart for Jin. It's hard to let go of your feelings for your first love." He kissed your forehead gently before releasing your face to wrap you in a hug. "Baby, I'm sorry your heart hurts and I hate that you feel undeserving. There's no one else I would rather be with than you."

Tears rolled down your cheeks as you clung to him. Guilt ate at your belly as you tried to convince yourself that what he said was true. He rubbed calming circles into your back, swaying side to side until you pulled away to wipe your eyes.

"Now," Tae said, bending down to your height. "Let's eat!"

"Uh, Y/N?" Jin called out. "Is everything okay in there?"

"Yes!" you shouted back, swiping at your brow. "Everything is fine! It'll be just a few more minutes!"

Everything was decidedly not okay. Somehow you had gotten the brilliant idea to invite Jin over for dinner. Usually, he was the one that would cook for the two of you, but tonight you wanted to do something special for him. You had decided you would make some steak and a nice salad for dinner. The salad was fine, the steak was. . . Not. You stared down at the very shrunken, very burnt steaks and tried to figure out how you could remedy the situation.

Suddenly, arms wrapped around you middle, scaring the living daylights out of you as Jin's chin came to rest on your shoulder. "So, this is what okay looks like, huh?" Jin teased.

"Ugh," you groaned covering your face. "I thought I could handle making you a nice dinner, but apparently steak is too advanced for me." Jin pressed his forehead into your shoulder as he laughed. "Jiiiiin, it's not funny!!" you exclaimed.

"Yes it is, Y/N," Jin answered, still laughing. "Don't worry though. I'll order us some take out." You groaned and dropped your head to the counter as Jin pulled out his phone to order the food.

This was your least favorite day. How can it have been two years already? you thought bitterly. Taehyung laced his fingers through yours and pulled you along gently.

"Come on, baby!" he said, infusing as much perkiness as he could into his voice. He knew what today was and he was trying to distract you so you wouldn't think about it. The day that Jin left you. "I got us a couple of tickets to that art exhibit I wanted to see, and then I got tickets for that movie you've been talking about!! And maybe afterwards if we aren't stuffed on popcorn we can go to dinner at that diner you love!"

You smiled fondly at Taehyung's back, appreciating everything he was doing to try and cheer you up today. Before you knew it, the two of you were making your way through the art exhibit, admiring all the pieces as you went. You knew that Tae could usually spend hours in a place like this, but because he wanted you to get to see that movie he was zipping right through. As you neared the end of the exhibit a familiar face caught your eye. Your froze, dread filling your gut when the man across the room caught your eye.

"Y/N?" He called out. You broke out in a cold sweat. Namjoon. You had done your best to avoid Jin's friends and family since that day, but to run into his brother of all people on this day of all days made you want to vomit. Jin's family must hate you. There was no way they didn't hate you after what happened that day. The Kims had all loved and adored you before, but now? Doubtful.

You turned and quickly started pulling Taehyung behind you. I have to get out of here you thought desperately. You could hear Namjoon behind you, calling out and trying to catch up with you. You were so thankful in this moment that Taehyung wasn't asking any questions. Emotion was clogging your throat and you weren't sure you would have been able to answer even if he had.

You were so close to escaping. So close. Just as your hand met the bar to push the door open, a large hand wrapped around your arm. You were pulled up short and spun around, coming eye to eye with Namjoon. Tears began pooling in your eyes when you looked at him. Namjoon pulled you in for a hug, shocking you so badly you dropped Taehyung's hand.

"It's okay, Y/N. It's okay." Namjoon murmured as you cried. "It's not your fault that Jin died."

///

It was pouring rain outside and you were scared to death. You hated driving in the rain, not to mention driving at night. You had stayed too late at the library and now you were going to have to drive home in this mess. You looked back at the light flooding from the library and wondered if Miss Robin would let you sleep on a couch for the night. Just as you were considering going back in and asking, a car pulled up in front of you.

"Hey!" Jin called out as he rolled down the window. "Get in!" Putting your bag up over your head to block some of the rain you jogged to his car and climbed inside.

"What are you doing here?" you asked him incredulously. He just smiled and shook his head, pulling away from the curb.

"I know you hate night driving and driving in the rain so I came to take you home, silly." He answered, smile obvious in his voice. As he drove the two of you talked about your day at work and what he had made today in his cooking classes. You were almost home when it happened. You were smiling at Jin as he told you about a cooking blunder Namjoon made the other night, when suddenly his eyes widened in horror and he jerked the steering wheel. You looked up and saw the headlights of another car coming into your lane. In spite of Jin trying to avoid the other car, they still hit you. The last thing you heard was the crunch of metal as the other car hit yours and everything went black.

You'd woken up in the hospital terrified and screaming for Jin. When they told you he was gone you couldn't believe it. If only you weren't so scared he would have still been alive.

///

After Namjoon caught you the three of you went to a nearby park so that you and Namjoon could talk. Shockingly, he seemed happy to see you and after initial hesitation seemed to take a liking to Tae as well. If you had known that talking to Namjoon would have made you feel such a sense of relief, you wouldn't have avoided him for so long.

He was heart sick that you'd spent the last two years thinking they all hated and blamed you. They'd missed you and were sad that you had stayed away for so long; none of them blamed you. You'd cried tears of relief when he told you that no one blamed you for what happened. A little guilt still ate at you, but it was like a weight was lifted off your shoulders.

Before he left, Namjoon had hugged you and made you agree to come visit his parents sometime. As you watched his retreating form, you felt Taehyung's large hand wrap around your much smaller hand. You looked up at him and saw him staring at you softly.

"Are you ready to go home, baby?" he asked softly, surveying your tired face. You shook your head and pulled out your phone so you could look something up.

"Can we," you started, "Would you mind if we went to see Jin?" There was a brief moment when surprise flashed on Taehyung's face, but it was quickly replaced my some odd mix of happiness and relief. He nodded at you and let you lead the way.

You hadn't been to see where Jin was laid to rest to now and you were scared, but you knew you needed the closure. Something inside of you knew that you would always love Jin, but after this, you would be able to give Taehyung your heart and the other side of your bed would become his side of the bed.
