Park Jimin •Essence of Guilt•

None of this was supposed to happen. Instead of taking pity on her for the dreadful events that have seemed to consume her entire existence, the universe decided to throw another curve ball that she couldn't possibly successfully hit and avoid. The few droplets that fell from the clouds turned into thousands as the rain had a chilling feel to it and became so thick that deep puddles in the indentions of the concrete sidewalk formed in just seconds. The forecast stated a mild midnight shower that could easily be blocked by an umbrella but she couldn't have anticipated this nor the event that took place just after.

The rain was so thick and dense that she couldn't see the other side of the crosswalk for the green walking figure that would allow her to venture onto the other side of the street. Taking her chances, she looked both ways and began walking at a fast pace as the rain drenched her from head to toe. If only there was some sort of sign that would've told her she made the wrong move.

Maybe she was being punished for something bad she did in a past life or perhaps she was a walking bad luck charm but did she really deserve this fate? It didn't take long for the girl to notice a glare in the corner of her eye and turn her head to the road only for two white lights to reflect in her dilated pupils. She was thankful shock took over her body before the harsh impact and she didn't feel a thing.

The man saw her at the very last second before deciding to slam on his breaks... but it wasn't enough. He had always been a safe driver and he kept his eyes attached onto the road the whole time because the rain was so difficult to see through and this was his first downfall as a driver. Once his car jolted to a stop, he recalled seeing her bewildered expression just before the impact and he didn't even realize his grip on the steering wheel tightened so much that his knuckles turned white. Breathing heavily, he released his grip and gulped before exiting the car. The man didn't care that the rain was drenching him, black strands of his hair sticking to his forehead and making his white button up almost see through.

He stumbled back once he saw her disheveled form. Blood was coming out of the side of her head as she was laying on her back, completely unconscious. Running to her body, he kneeled down and placed his hand on her cheek to turn her head for confirmation that she was definitely unconscious. She was very pale and her lips were slowly turning to an unhealthy shade. Cursing under his breath, he took his wet phone out of his pant pocket and dialed 911, quickly putting it to his ear and yelling at them to come to his location.

From there, he stared at her features, hoping for a miracle that she will survive. That was when he heard the sirens in the distance.

Thinking back to his childhood, he never did anything to make him feel the way he did now. He didn't lie to his parents or elders, he could never hurt a fly, and he was always polite to every person he came into contact with. However, as the man sat in the waiting room, a certain feeling was bubbling up in his chest that made his heart beat speed up rapidly and he bounced one of his legs up and down in nervousness. With his hands intertwined together and his arms on his knees, he was leaned over, staring at the floor, thinking about the girl he hurt.

A pair of tennis shoes placed themselves in his field of vision and he quickly looked up to see a woman in blue scrubs. She gave him a sympathetic smile and asked, "Are you the man who called for her?" He gulped as he stared at the woman and slowly nodded. She then asked, "I didn't get your name."

He hesitated before responding, "Park Jimin." She gave him another smile and sat in the seat next to him, her body turned towards him but he didn't move an inch until she placed her hand on his arm and he snapped his head towards her. She noticed the fear in his eyes and pitied him. Choosing her words carefully, she said in a soft tone, "It wasn't like there was much visibility. Anyone could have done this."

Jimin didn't know how to respond. The only thing he concentrated on was the feeling of a water droplet slowly sliding down the side of his face and falling on his arm. Licking his lips for a moment, he stared into the woman's eyes and asked in a strained voice, "How is she?"

She gave him a small smile and responded, "The impact of the car caused internal bleeding in the abdomen and two broken ribs. The fall she had after being hit also caused a brain bleed..." the surgeon looked away for a moment and then met his dark and concerned eyes again, "She survived it but... her brain injury caused her to fall into a coma because we didn't catch the actual damage of the brain before working on the rest of her injuries. There's also a possibility she could be brain dead but we are going to monitor her brain activity closely."

Jimin stared at her in shock for a moment and he could feel the tears well up in his eyes but he didn't want to lose his "manly pride" by crying even though it was a hospital where tons of people shed tears daily. Placing his face in his hands, he thought about everything he could've done to prevent this. Perhaps go a different route or ask to go home early from work that night. But he didn't and all he felt in that moment was guilt... A foreign sensation that took over his every being.

The surgeon rubbed soothing circles on his back and said, "Hey... listen to me," he slowly looked up at her and she continued, "I know you must feel an overwhelming amount of guilt over this but this girl... she has no one to look after her. There's no immediate family or anything in her records," Jimin's heart shattered at that statement and he felt sick to his stomach. She continued by saying, "You need to be there for her and give yourself a sense of closure by making it up to her."

The corners of Jimin's lips lifted upwards just a small bit at the idea. He didn't realize how much he wanted to help her until the surgeon told him to do so. With that, he nodded and the woman smiled at him and stood up, expecting to exit the waiting room until Jimin said, "Wait..." she turned around and gave him a questioning look. Rubbing the back of his neck, he asked, "What is her name?"

He was led to the ICU where many patients lay in their own secluded area with their loved ones holding their hands and praying for a miracle to bring them back. Jimin grimaced at the thought and stopped in his tracks when he saw the girl named (Y/N). His mouth fell slightly agape in shock at her state. A thick white bandage was wrapped around her head from the brain surgery she went through and tubes stuck out from her mouth, a ventilator breathing for her. The sound of the heart monitor was only a mere background noise as he was induced in the midst of his own chaotic thoughts.

Looking around the room for a moment, he saw a nurse typing on a computer that sat on top of a small rolling desk. She ignored his presence and he instead walked over to (Y/N), taking in her whole appearance. Pulling out a chair, he sat by her bed and scanned from her face to her body that was covered up with a blanket from the waist down.

Running a hand through his dark and soft hair, Jimin thought about what he could do for this girl that entered his life in the worst way possible. Staring at her pale hand, he decided to lightly grab it and hold her hand, hoping for some unknown reason she could feel him trying to give her reassurance by his gentle grip. Looking around awkwardly, he opened his mouth to say something until he closed it again, unsure of what to say to the girl.

Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, Jimin cleared his throat and said with vulnerability laced in his tone, "I'm so sorry this happened to you... I should've been more careful and-" he cut himself off when he felt as if his throat was burning, causing tears to well up in his eyes. Blinking them away, he continued, "There's not much I can do to show you how sorry I am that I did this to you," Jimin held her hand in both of his, "But I'm going to be here for you even after you wake up from this mess. I promise."

It had been three days since the accident and Jimin never backed down from his promise to (Y/N). He would visit her every day during his lunch break and after work because he couldn't leave his job no matter how much he begged. Although it was only a mere few days, he felt closer to her. Nonetheless, he still anticipated seeing her eyes open so he can see them up close in a new light. His life changed so quickly and it completely revolved around her.

The dark-haired man would hold her hand, telling her about himself and bringing up different topics. He didn't care if the nurses thought he was insane for talking to an unconscious girl, he cared about her so much despite never actually formally meeting her. Jimin knew absolutely nothing about (Y/N) but there was a deep desire that enlightened his every being to get to know her someday and be by her side when she's awake.

The air conditioning caused the whole room to turn cold and he noticed (Y/N)'s blanket only covered her legs. Pulling the blanket up to her chin, he stared at her face, scanning her features. Her expression was solemn and she looked at peace but much too pale for anyone's liking. Jimin rubbed his face with his hand, guilt still hitting him like waves. The feeling would never go away and all the man could do is contain it to the best of his abilities.

An unexpected knock on the door caused Jimin to slightly jump in his seat and he turned towards the doorway, seeing the small smile of the doctor that was in charge of checking (Y/N) frequently. Jimin stood up and bowed, earning a slight nod from the doctor.

"How are you today, Mr. Park?" He pulled out a chart and clicked his pen, writing something down as he looked at (Y/N)'s vitals. Jimin watched his every move and replied, "Not so good because she's not awake yet. Any improvements, Dr. Kim?"

The doctor gave him an uneasy look and approached the unconscious girl. He opened each eyelid and shined a small light into her eyes, checking for any sign of activity. Sighing, the black-haired doctor grimaced before saying, "I'm afraid there is absolutely no progress in brain activity." Jimin's eyes widened and he looked from the doctor to the girl.

Seeing as the man wasn't going to reply, the tall doctor pointed at one of the monitors and said, "You see that screen?" Jimin nodded and he continued, "That monitors her brain activity. The lines are flat but if you look at this," he took out a scan and handed it to the man, "This is another patient who is showing signs of brain activity while in a coma. The lines are not straight and show some brain activity so there is a chance they will wake up."

He narrowed his eyes at the scan and handed it back to Dr. Kim, clenching his fists and asking, "Are you saying there's no chance for (Y/N)?" The doctor let out a long sigh and said while extending his hand to touch Jimin's shoulder, "Mr. Park, let's take a seat."

Jimin slapped his hand away and furrowed his eyebrows before saying in a loud tone, "No! None of this was supposed to happen! I just wanted to go home from work and she was probably doing the same. She doesn't deserve this!" He grabbed at his hair and sat down, tears threatening to fall if he didn't calm down.

The other man sat down across from him, looking at the patient for a moment before averting his eyes back to Jimin, "Listen... things like this happen all the time. It's unexpected and unfair but she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The most you can do for her now is stay with her until we figure out when her time is up."

The dark-haired man paused, his hands dropping from his hair and giving the doctor a blank expression, he said, "What do you mean by that? Is there really no hope for (Y/N)?" Dr. Kim stood up and ushered for Jimin to do so as well. They both stood on opposite sides of her bed and the doctor cleared his throat before saying, "This ventilator is breathing for her. If we take her off of it, she'll stop breathing and eventually die. It could take minutes or it could take hours."

Jimin bit his bottom lip and stared at (Y/N)'s face and the doctor continued by saying, "She doesn't have any emergency contact or close family in her records and seeing as you're the closest one to her at the moment, you have some deciding to do," Jimin nodded slowly, understanding what the doctor was wanting him to think about. Giving him a sympathetic smile, Dr. Kim left him in silence.

Letting out a heavy sigh, he pulled the seat closer to the bed and grabbed the girl's cold hand. His eyes were watering and he looked down for a moment before saying, "How can I decide something like this? I've never even talked to you and I know absolutely nothing about you..." he knew he wouldn't get a response, so he continued, "I'm sure you have hopes and dreams that you had plans of achieving and I would want nothing more than for you to wake up right now and recover so you can get back to your life and achieve those goals."

Giving her hand one last squeeze, the man lifelessly chuckled before saying, "You need to wake up now or else you'll have a stranger make a detrimental decision for you. You wouldn't want that... right?" Nothing. Just the sound of her breathing through a tube and the beeping of a monitor blocked all other noise. Jimin hated how stuffy the room felt at that moment and his eyes drifted to the lines the doctor pointed out before. They were flat and he let go of her hand, feeling as if the decision was already made three days ago.

•••

"You made the right decision," Dr. Kim placed his hand on Jimin's shoulder while saying, "She would want this." The dark-haired man glared at the other and shrugged his hand off before saying, "You don't know what she would've wanted. No one does..." the doctor purses his lips together, deciding to leave the man be and began exiting the room.

An ICU nurse came in, directing the man and telling him all that will happen to her body and the order of which she will turn each life-supporting monitor off. He mindlessly nodded, not actually listening to what the woman was saying, for all that clouded his mind in that exact moment was what the helpless girl must've been like. How her voice sounded, what kind of laugh she had, and if her eyes sparkled when she talked about something she loved.

Those are the things Park Jimin would never know of.

It stung every ounce of his being at the thought of how clueless he is about this ordinary girl who got into an accident that was about to take her life. He couldn't stand the look the nurse was giving him as she told him all of the things she was going to do that would end her life. The woman pitied him for what was about to be lost. Did she even know he had no information on this girl? Did she even care or was this just so routine to her that it already left her numb a long time ago?

"Sir," she said and he snapped out of his daydreaming, "You should take a seat and hold her hand. This process could take minutes or it could-" he cut her off by saying, "take hours... I know."

She averted her eyes away from him and walked to one of the monitors, clicking the button and the screen turned black. After a few more, the woman approached (Y/N) and slowly detached the tube. The vulnerable girl released one last heavy breath and her chest heaved down. Jimin grabbed her hand quickly, giving it a reassuring squeeze.

Tears pricked the back of his eyes and he let one fall. Despite knowing nothing about this stranger, he couldn't help but feel the sorrow already weighing down on him. Maybe it's his own selfishness that stemmed from his guilt that caused him to feel this way. Deep down, Jimin knew that wasn't the case. He had an inner desire to know her and understand her but it dawned upon him that he would never have that opportunity. In another life, maybe they would be close friends or even lovers.

Staring at her solemn face, Jimin felt as if she was slipping away too quickly and uttered a single shaky, "I'm so sorry..."

And at that moment, the monitor flatlined.
