Min Yoongi •Solitude•
It was when a student held out the paper to him when he walked along the crowded high school hallway, that his heart rate sped up when the said student exclaimed, "New literary guild release!" He tried not to act so anxious and simply stared at the paper for a moment before taking it from the male student and walking outside to a nearby bench in front of the school to read the material he held so dear to him.
The sky was cloudy with only glimpses of sunlight peeking through. The smell of rain was in the air and the temperature was slowly dropping to a chilly degree. Yoongi didn't care. He needed to be alone and not feel suffocated in that hallway as he read the words on what he considered a canvas because it was painted with her words.
He couldn't help but allow a small and barely noticeable smile approach his lips. Yoongi lowered the paper and looked towards the sky that seemed to reflect that of the poem. He admired her in ways no one else possibly could and only he knew it. As someone who is never open about anything and hides his emotions behind that stoic facade of his, it was easy for the dark-haired man to only show his utmost admiration for the quiet girl from afar who everyone only sees writing in a journal. Their literature teacher favors her for her activeness in the literary guild, but he favors her for the words she writes that seem to spark an unknown feeling in his soul every time he reads it. She seemed to understand things in a deeper context than most people do and that reflects in her writing and poetry.
Yoongi himself is also a writer, one that creates song lyrics that portrays his own life and inner thoughts. No one knew about his hobby and he wanted to keep it that way until he's ready to release his music to the world. It was that mere similarity that brought about such a deep attachment he had for her. Everything about the girl intrigued him and he could never take his eyes off of her when she was in the same room as him. She was difficult to figure out and no one else seemed to look at her the way Yoongi did.

He never had such an intense attraction to anyone before he found out about her. It was when he read the first addition of the literary guild and saw her poem from a year ago that Yoongi glanced at who the author was, then skimmed through the previous year's dusty yearbook to see what she looked like. The boy never realized he shared a few classes with her in the past due to her quiet nature. She talked to people, but not as much as the average teenage girl probably would. In ways unfamiliar to her, they were similar.
"I want you all to write an excerpt on the topic of solitude with a minimum of 250 words," a few were attentive to what the teacher was saying, but others were groaning in despair at the fact that they were given a new assignment. The older man continued, "This will be due tomorrow, so I'll give you class time to get started now."
Yoongi glanced over at the girl that sat a few seats away from him across the room. He could see the small twitch of a smile on her face and he couldn't help but chuckle to himself at her obvious eagerness. The dark-haired boy's friend, Hoseok, witnessed Yoongi's change of expression and rolled his eyes. He knew his friend was apprehensive about exposing himself about his attraction to the girl.
Nonetheless, he avoided questioning Yoongi about it and narrowed his eyes at the word 'SOLITUDE' that stood out on the board. Nudging the blank-faced boy, Hoseok said, "Yah, what does solitude mean?"

As the bell rang to release the class, Yoongi thought about the topic he was given. To be honest, he didn't even need to work that hard on the assignment. He knew what loneliness felt like and as he got older, it was becoming more apparent to him what it felt like to live a life of solitude. When he told his parents about his desire to pursue a music career, they didn't agree whatsoever and chose to not be supportive of his dream. At the time, it hurt him and slowly transformed him into a cold person, but since he'll be graduating soon, he didn't care about their opinion and chose to keep to himself for the time being, only allowing himself talk to Hoseok, as that was his only friend.
During the class time the teacher gave them to work on the assignment, he went through his music journal and found pieces of his lyrics that correlated to the topic. In the 30 minutes that everyone was rushing to complete the assignment so they didn't have to do it at home, Yoongi finished it in ease because all of the elements were already embedded in parts of lyrics he wrote in the past. The boy spent the rest of the time admiring the quiet girl from afar as she passionately wrote, being sure Hoseok didn't notice him staring at someone.
As the class was getting their materials back in their backpacks before heading to their next class, Yoongi lazily trudged to the teacher's desk and placed his excerpt on the mahogany top. The blatantly older man rose his eyebrow at the paper, then looked up at his student that had an obvious case of senioritis. Yoongi smacked his lips before saying, "I finished the assignment," and walked away. The teacher scoffed and watched his student walk towards his friend and exit the classroom.
Before even acknowledging Hoseok, Yoongi couldn't help but have his eyes wander on the smaller girl who held her journal close to her chest as she trudged her way to her next class. Hoseok couldn't take it anymore and he hit his friend's arm with such aggression that it shocked Yoongi, leaving him with his mouth slightly hanging open and subtle glaring eyes.
"Can you just talk to that girl already? I've been watching you drool over her for the past year and I'm over it," the dark-haired boy tried to mask his nervousness at the fact that he was exposed and intended to defend himself, but Hoseok was quick to say, "And don't deny it."
Yoongi rolled his eyes and responded, "It's nothing."
The louder male let out an exhale of frustration and exclaimed, "You only have a few months left until you'll probably never see her again. Make a move now or I will and make you jealous so you'll regret missing your chance." The two stopped in the middle of the hallway, students giving them dirty looks for getting in their way. Yoongi gave him a cold stare as Hoseok crossed his arms and gave him a smug look. He couldn't deny his friend was right and at that revelation, he let out a chuckle.
"Fine, Hoseok. Do as you wish." At that, the shorter boy walked away and masked himself in the crowd of hurried students.

The next day, the bell rang and the literature teacher kept his eyes glued to his next target, Min Yoongi. Before the quiet boy and his relatively loud friend could exit the room, he called his name. The student turned to him with a grimace and the teacher said, "Can I speak to you for a moment?" Yoongi looked at his friend, who gave him an expression of confusion, and cocked his head to the side to signify he can leave without him.
The shorter boy approached his teacher's desk. Mr. Kang's hands were clasped together in front of his face with a serious expression plastered on his features. Once Yoongi's bored gaze caught his, the older man's fingertips touched the top of a piece of used paper, and spun it to face his student. The younger one took notice of the red A embedded on the sheet of the plaster white paper, and only allowed his eyes to graze it before looking back at his teacher.
"What about it?"
Mr. Kang slightly widened his eyes and let out a cough in embarrassment before straightening up in his seat and saying, "Yoongi, you have amazing potential. The detail of your thoughts on solitude was spot on and the wording was phenomenal." Yoongi nodded in understanding, much to his dismay. Sighing, he continued, "I want you to join the literary guild."
The literature teacher couldn't tell what his student was thinking, for all Min Yoongi did was give a blank stare void of any emotion. But suddenly, as if the funniest joke on the planet made itself heard, he chuckled, "You're kidding, right?"
The older man shook his head at his student's ignorance, and gave him a serious look when responding, "I'm not. I feel like your talent shouldn't go unnoticed," Yoongi rolled his eyes at that, but the elder chose to ignore that and continued, "I'm sure Y/N would be glad to have you join the literary guild, right Y/N?" The boy froze in his spot for a moment and slowly turned himself towards where his teacher's eyes were directed. The girl was adjusting her backpack straps and gave Yoongi a small, yet sweet smile that made his heart flutter, though no one would notice from his stoic exterior.
"Of course," Y/N began and walked a bit closer to them. She looked up at him and he knew at the point, there was no way he could form a coherent sentence. She glanced at her teacher, then looked at him and said, "There's always room for talented writers in the guild."
"Y/N is a great asset to the club, you should really consider joining," Mr. Kang spoke, yet he didn't hear a word. Yoongi had girlfriends in the past, every now and then a simple fling, but none of them gave him the feelings he was experiencing now. She wasn't even looking at him, but dropping her eyes to the floor with a subtle flush to her cheeks and a humble smile teasing her lips at the compliment her teacher gave her. It was obvious to Yoongi she was very shy about her talent, but also wanted to share it with people and hope to inspire them. If someone were to analyze his expression now, they would see adoration in his eyes as he blatantly took in the presence of the girl before him.
"Yeah," the word slipped past his lips, but it was not in acceptance to joining the literary guild, but as if agreeing with his teacher that she is indeed an asset to the club. However, the two didn't interpret it like that. Instead, the teacher's eyes widened and the shorter girl snapped her head up at him with her eyes widened. The hope in her eyes was something he could drown himself in and gladly never come back from, and it was just that notion that caused him to avoid refuting what he said before.
"So you'll try it out?" Y/N seemed giddy as she asked the question and Yoongi noticed a glimmer cross her eyes.
It was then that he noticed he was staring, and broke eye contact to face the elder. Sighing and rubbing his neck, he begrudgingly responded, "I guess... just to see what it's like."
Mr. Kang clapped twice and spun in his swivel chair while Y/N perked up and gave Yoongi a wide smile. He had never seen her smile with her teeth, for she normally only showed small ones that sometimes weren't even noticeable. The boy couldn't help but look down in embarrassment and chuckle.
After all, he was only doing this for her.

Mr. Kang told Yoongi that Y/N wanted to talk to him one-on-one about his writing and share some of her own works with him the following day after school, and he had no complaints about that. Hoseok screeched in his ear once he heard the news. Though there was nothing to complain about, he still wanted to keep his lyrics private, but at the same time, it might be to his benefit to open up to someone in an introspective way. As he slowly approached the library, Yoongi saw the girl from the window of the door. She seemed to have been daydreaming as her pen laid between her fingers, the tip pressed harshly onto the white paper of her journal.
Unconsciously, he adjusted the color of his black sweatshirt and cleared his throat. With much hesitation, he opened the door and the girl turned her head in his direction, flashing him a small smile and quickly redirecting her attention to the open notebook. He noticed that she seemed a bit shy, but he couldn't blame her because he felt the same. Despite his feelings of apprehension, Yoongi felt as if this was his only chance to truly talk to her and open himself up a bit.
Softening his features to avoid looking too harsh, he pulled out the chair next to her and sat relatively close, which didn't go unnoticed for Y/N. She gave him a side glance and cleared her throat in nervousness. The girl didn't know what came over her, maybe it was the fact that a guy that a lot of girls like for being cool is sitting so close to her, or perhaps the proximity caused her to smell his cologne. Nonetheless, she mustered up the courage to offer him a small and inviting smile, which didn't go unnoticed.
Clearing his throat, Yoongi asked, "How are you?" Immediately, he clenched his fist in embarrassment at himself. He didn't want to be cheesy and shit, but he couldn't think of another way to break the ice quick enough.
Y/N looked at him with her eyes widened ever so slightly, almost as if she were surprised. The girl couldn't remember the last time she had been asked such a simple and relatively basic question. Even just noting the fact that someone even cared brought a wave of an unfamiliar feeling of satisfaction. Softening her features while he stared at her with anticipating eyes she chuckled and looked down with shyness, "I'm good," she made eye contact with him again, "And you?"
It was hard to even look away from her glazed over eyes and just the way she looked so interested in his response. It brought a fluttery feeling in his stomach. She broke his stoic and cold exterior with her simple response and let his lips tug upward, "I'm good," he looked to the window outside and saw that the sky was cloudless, blue seeming to overshadow everything else. Keeping his gaze on the outdoors, he continued, "It's a good day."
Y/N peeled her eyes away from him and looked at the window herself. It did seem like a good day. However, even with the weather looking ever so inviting, she knew even the worst of days can occur when the sun is out. Nonetheless, she wouldn't let such pessimistic thoughts distract her from what she was here for.
Looking back at him with amusement, she softly said, "Makes you want to write about it, huh?" He snapped his head back towards her and scanned her expression. He, once again, cleared his throat in awkwardness. She noticed he seemed a bit antsy and unsure, but in a way, she could relate. There was something about their encounter with Mr. Kang that gave off the impression he didn't even want to be apart of the literary guild. Why he accepted the offer, she didn't know. But she also didn't want to waste his time.
Closing her journal, she put it in her backpack. Yoongi looked at her in confusion and she caught his gaze, "I know you don't want any part of the literary guild, and that's okay," he opened his mouth to say something, but words wouldn't escape no matter how hard he tried. She narrowed her eyes at him as if to urge him to speak, but continued, "Mr. Kang can be scary persistent, so no worries."
The girl got up and was about to reach down for her bag, but a hand clasped itself around her arm. She turned to him quickly and looked at him in surprise. Yoongi looked up at her, maintaining a hard and serious gaze, which made her gulp. Then he said, "We didn't even introduce ourselves." He used his shoe to push the seat outwards for her to sit back down in and released his grip before crossing his arms and leaning back in his seat.
Wavering her eyes, Y/N took a seat and clasped her hands on her lap in sudden timidness. Yoongi stared at her and decided to drop the shyness he clung onto, because he could tell she felt the same. Leaning forward a bit, he said, "I'm Min Yoongi, and you're right. I don't give a shit about the literary guild." She pursed her lips and disregarded his profanity since he seemed like the type to spat out curses at any second. The male cocked his head to the side and asked, "And you?"
She could sense playful mockery in his tone and became even more shy from the realization. Looking down at her intertwined hands, she said, "Y/N... and I do give a shit about the literary guild." He chuckled at her saying a curse word because she didn't seem like the type... but he oddly liked it. She pushed some hair behind her hair and looked him dead in the eye when asking, "If you aren't here for the literary guild then what are you here for?"
Yoongi held her gaze and thought about her question. He knew the answer, but whether or not he wanted to tell the girl was another story. Then he realized they would be graduating in a few months and none of that would matter. Without even catching himself, he mumbled, "Ah, fuck it," to which Y/N widened her eyes. Yoongi ignored her accusatory stare and said, "Because I like you and this is the only chance I have to actually talk to you."
The girl bit her lip in nervousness and looked away from the sudden confession. Did she think Min Yoongi, the guy everyone was low key afraid of and no one had any idea about, had feelings for her? Not in a thousand years. Did she know how to respond? Hell no. The dark-haired boy sighed and scratched his neck from her lack of response. Rubbing his face with his hands in frustration, he said, "Look, I'm sorry if that freaked you out, but we're graduating soon and I needed to say that before I presumably never see you again."
She looked at him with a blank expression and asked, "Why?" Then leaning back in her seat in defeat, the girl continued, "I'm nobody."
"And I'm somebody?" He gave her a cold expression and she could barely look him in the eye from the way he was looking at her. Yoongi's aura was dominated by intimidation in that moment and she responded, "You're more of a somebody than I am."
He chuckled bitterly at that and looked to the side while poking his tongue on the inside of his cheek. Glancing back at her, he said with near anger in his tone, "Who you are in high school doesn't mean shit in the real world," he watched as she looked down at her lap in embarrassment, for what he said was absolutely correct. The girl tried reassuring herself of that numerous times, but always ended up feeling defeated in the end. Yoongi's expression softened at her and he said, "Besides, you're somebody to me."
Y/N shyly looked up at him and he held her gaze as gently as he could, "Every month when the literary guild comes out with new material, I'm always the first to read it if it has your name on it. No one else has noticed, but reading your words has slowly revealed what kind of person you are." The girl's eyes brightened ever so slightly and her lips parted only a little. He continued, "You have your demons, some I resonate with, but you're able to recover. Those are things I have a hard time with, but watching and seeing how you cope through writing, has given me reassurance."
Feeling tears well up in her eyes, Y/N was quick to wipe them away before softly saying, "Thank you for saying that."
Yoongi gave her a genuine smile when holding up a journal in his hand and stating, "I have my own demons embedded in this book, and I'd be glad to share them with you in the way you unknowingly shared them with me."
