Kyla stayed inside all day after her parents anniversary party, wallowing away in her sadness. She had cried so much to the point where her eyes were puffy and her face was stained red.
She didn't know why JJ had pushed her away like that. She had talked to him about his "ghosting" issue after their mini fight right after returning to the island, so the only thing she could think of was that he really did lose feelings for her.
But she didn't want to believe that. It didn't make sense. He had professed his love for her on Poguelandia and they stayed there together for a month — a whole month of being in love and then...nothing. Maybe he had got over the honeymoon phase and realized he didn't actually love her.
Those were the thoughts that kept parading in Kyla's mind, telling her she would never be good enough for anyone at this point.
When she arrived back home with Sarah and Kiara after the whole fight (could you call it a fight if Topper didn't even get a punch in on John B?) between John B and Topper, she had broke the news to them about the break up.
Apparently Sarah and John B had broken up as well, which didn't surprise the sisters after just seeing what had went down.
Sarah and Kiara tried cheering Kyla up while Kiara and Kyla tried cheering Sarah up — Kiara basically being the only "normal" one — but it was no use for Kyla. She was heartbroken and she didn't think anyone could fix it.
With Sarah, it was a different story. She still loved John B and new she had made a grave mistake, which is why she seemed so eager to fix it before all the girls fell asleep.
Well, Kyla basically cried all night and until the next morning. She didn't want to move or do anything, which was another reason why her parents were skeptical (since they hadn't known she and JJ were together in the first place) so they practically forced her and Kiara out of the house — even though Kiara left to go drop Sarah off somewhere earlier — to talk to them at The Wreck.
Kyla made herself put some makeup on, wanting to cover up her puffy eyes and her reddened face so no one could ask her any questions. She knew as soon as someone asked "are you okay?" she would just break down in tears in the spot, so she'd rather cover up her downcast face.
Upon arriving at The Wreck, their parents had sat them down and decided to take out different pamphlets showcasing multiple boarding schools/camps that were aimed at helping troubled teens.
Kyla was still miserable that she barely even reacted to seeing them, only wearing spaced out look. "I thought we were past this," Kiara spoke since Kyla wasn't going to any time soon.
"Kiara, it's similar to what you've been doing. It's not having to sit at a desk every day," Anna explained, trying to appeal to the girl.
"She's painting rocks," Kiara pointed out with an unamused tone after seeing one of the pictures.
"Okay, so yes, not this one. But look at this one, please. This is all wilderness activity stuff. This is what you've been doing. It just has structure and safety to it," Anna told her.
"Listen, if you wanna go across the ocean, you first have to build a boat," Mike joined in. "Okay? And you haven't built the boat yet, Kiara. You haven't put in the groundwork that's needed. Without that, you're not going anywhere. I mean, Kyla was doing that before she was pulled into this mess."
At the mention of her name, Kyla looked over at her father and replied, "What?" She hadn't really been listening to the conversation, mostly dissociating and replaying her conversation with JJ over and over again in her head.
Mike gave her a look. "Do you understand what I'm saying?" he questioned, raising his eyebrows a bit.
"Uh, yeah, yeah," she said even though it wasn't too convincing.
Mike's nose flared in annoyance that his daughters just didn't seem to get the importance of the situation. "All your dad is trying to say is that we need there to be a plan in place for your guys' safety, that's all," Anna clarified, noticing her husband getting impatient with them.
"I get it, and if I were you guys, I'd be wondering the same thing. We were gone for weeks. We haven't gone back to school yet, and we keep delaying, but...like so much has happened. Like, we — we were abducted! We thought were gonna die! Like, so much has changed!" Kiara exclaimed and Kyla nodded slowly, agreeing with her since she had finally tuned into the conversation. "I...I really understand what you guys want from me."
"We both do," Kyla added, not wanting her parents to get mad at her for thinking she wasn't listening.
"We're just not into school right now. And we're really, really not into going away for school," Kiara finished, a pleading tone to her voice.
"Okay," Anna began as Mike got up from his seat. But then, someone knocked on the door and they all looked over to see Pope and Cleo standing there.
"Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Carrera," Pope greeted awkwardly.
"Uh, we're gonna get that," Kiara said, grabbing Kyla's hand to get her out of her seat quickly. Kyla almost fell over, too exhausted to be doing fast movements at the moment.
"Guys. Come back," Anna tried but the girls just kept on walking toward their friends.
"Guys, what's up? Now is not a good time," Kiara told Pope and Cleo as they exited their family's restaurant, not listening to their mother. "Our parents are on a little warpath about our future."
"Yeah, I think they're this close to murdering us," Kyla voiced, holding up her fingers to show just a small inch of space between them.
"This'll only take a second," Pope assured them. "Do you still have that picture you took at Singh's? The one with the painting?" he asked Kiara.
"Yeah, obviously," Kiara replied, pulling out her phone from her back pocket.
Pope took the phone and breathed out, "Thank you."
"That was rude," Kiara commented as Pope and Cleo started to walk off, Pope searching for the photo on her phone. "What are you even looking for?"
"It was something Cleo found, actually," Pope pointed out as he and Cleo sat down at a table right outside the restaurant.
"What is it?" Kyla asked, wanting to distract herself from her unwanted thoughts since Pope and Cleo seemed eager about something.
"Here it it. It's a letter Denmark Tanny wrote to his daughter," Pope said as he handed the letter to Kiara with Kyla looking over at it as well.
"We found it last night. Family heirlooms and thingums," Cleo told them, sending Pope a smile. Kiara noticed the small, but cute interaction, feeling sad for herself yet also happy for Pope since it seemed like Cleo had liked him from her perspective.
"We think we found a connection to the idol. Look, check this out." Kyla and Kiara sat down across from them to get a closer look. "See the king sun glyph here?" he quizzed, pointing at the glyph on the sheet as he held the photo of Singh's painting with his other hand.
"Yeah," Kiara answered as Kyla nodded.
"It matches the one in the painting at Singh's house."
Kiara furrowed her brows, shaking her head. "Couldn't that mean it's pretty common?"
"Actually, no. These glyphs are Kalinago, which has never been deciphered," Pope revealed.
"Never?"
"Never ever," Cleo confirmed.
"Never ever," Pope repeated. "Some people believe that the captain of the San Jose actually found somebody who knew how to translate these glyphs because he found El Dorado."
"The priest that talked to Denmark Tanny, that was on the Royal Merchant," Kiara realized, holding her hands up to her head. Kyla's eyes widened at the information, realizing what this could mean about finding El Dorado.
"Exactly. Every glyph that is in this letter is in the artifact," Pope continued, switching the photo over to the artifact. "This isn't just some random Rosetta Stone for Kalinago..." he trailed off.
"It's a direct translation key for the idol," Kyla finished for him, seeming to wake up from the groundbreaking information they had just figured out. Pope nodded and pointed at her seeing as though she had gotten it spot on.
"And we can use this to save Big John," Cleo added.
"Guys, we have to get this to John B, like, yesterday," Kiara urgently spoke before they all got up from their seats, wanting to find John B as fast as they could.
"Hey! Hey!" Mike called out from the restaurant, causing them to stop and look over at him. "Where you guys going?"
Kiara glanced at her sister, who didn't know what to say. "Uh, to the break," Kiara lied. "We're gonna go check out the surf. Can we finish this later?"
To their surprises, Mike replied, "Yeah. Have fun."
"Yeah," Kiara said with a nod before the four of them rushed off to try to find John B.
・・・・☆・・・・☆ ・・・・
Apparently, John B had been arrested for beating Topper up, which had put a wrench into their plan for helping Big John. But Sarah told them just to wait at the Château and to trust whatever plan she had up her sleeve.
The rest of the Pogues waited at the Château for the Cameron girl, which proved to be very awkward and crestfallen between Kyla and JJ.
When they all met up at the Château, Kyla didn't even look at JJ. She knew she couldn't or else she would probably start sobbing again. How pathetic, she thought to herself, hating the fact she was being so dramatic even though, taking things into account, she really wasn't.
Meanwhile, JJ did nothing but stare at her the whole time. Even though he had been the one to break her heart, he was aware of that, he desperately wanted to talk to her to clear some things up. He still thought it would be better if they were broken up since he didn't want to hold her back, but he did kind of leave the conversation off with a passive aggressive tone that he wanted to apologize for.
The tension didn't go unnoticed by the other Pogues either and they prayed that Sarah would arrive soon so they could talk about the plan to save Big John so the tension would dissipate.
Their prays had been answered when Sarah walked up to them, a smile on her face. "Hey, thanks for waiting. Um...Look who decided to come home," she spoke, looking over her shoulder as John B walked out of the house.
"Hey!" Kiara greeted, a surprised smile growing on her face.
"Oh, wow," Kyla breathed out, not expecting that whatsoever after what happened last between Sarah and John B.
"Welcome back," Cleo teased.
"Whoa! Good to see you man," Pope voiced.
"You gotta be kidding me," JJ smirked from up on the tree, separated from the other Pogues, as John B walked toward them.
"I have something I want to share with you guys. I can get us down to the Orinoco," Sarah revealed after a moment, making their eyes widen.
"Are you serious?" Pope questioned in shock.
"Yeah."
"Okay. And how's that gonna happen?" Cleo inquired about.
"My dad's gonna let us use the plane," Sarah told them, which earned even more surprised looks from all of them.
"Ward?" JJ asked.
"Your dad?" Pope emphasized.
"Yep."
"Ah..." JJ trailed off.
"We lay low tonight, then wheels up first thing in the morning," Sarah explained.
"Okay, that's a lot to process. Your dad actually helping us," Pope pointed out.
"I talked to him. He'll do it," Sarah assured them.
"So we trusting Ward now?" Cleo questioned, looking at the others.
"Trust Sarah," Kiara answered.
"All right!"
"Well great. That's all I needed to hear."
"But wait, I also just have one more thing to say. Um...Since we've gotten back from the island, I've done some things that I regret. A lot," Sarah began, looking over at John B who was already gazing at her.
Kiara quickly cleared her throat, wanting John B to say something in response. It seemed like he had gotten the hint since he spoke up, "Yeah, uh...I feel — I feel like we've all done a thing or two that we regret."
JJ eyes traveled over to Kyla and she could practically feel his eyes on her while she continued the resist the urge to look at them. She then heard him faintly scoff, which only confirmed her suspicion.
"And...I don't — Poguelandia...guys. It's all I've been able to think about. We were all together on that island, and it was a good thing, and I don't want to ruin a good thing. And I...I just wanna know, are we still all in? Are we still all together?" Sarah questioned. "Because I am."
"Yeah," Kiara replied, giving Sarah a hug.
"I've been all in ever since I stupidly decided to join this treasure hunt," Kyla joked which made them all laugh before Kyla pulled Sarah into a hug.
"We pon road!" Cleo exclaimed, making them all laugh again.
Sarah hugged her and chuckled, "I love you."
"I still can't believe you got that plane," Pope recalled.
"I know!" Sarah laughed.
"That's actually insane," he said as he hugged her.
"Let's go get Big John, all right?" JJ voiced as he walked over them, all of them wrapping their arms around each other. Thankfully for Kyla, she was in between Sarah and Kiara so she wouldn't have to be next to JJ. "What do you say there, shit bird?" he asked John B.
"I think this deserves a woogity. How long you gonna pretend like you're not coming over here?" Pope said to the Routledge boy.
"You in?" the blonde boy urged.
"Come over here, funny man," Cleo voiced as John B began to smile and walk over to them.
"We don't bite," Kiara joked as they pulled John B into their Pogue group hug.
"Are you sure about that?" Kyla questioned seeing as though they have been in multiple fight or flight instances where they have chosen fight. Kiara just shrugged, making them laugh again.
"Now we woogity!" Pope shouted.
"Oh, we're really doing this, aren't we?" John B said in disbelief, shaking his head at his friends.
"We're doing it, man!" Pope replied as the others all nodded determinedly.
After their long group hug, they headed inside John B's house where they'd lay low the whole night until the next day.
Kyla sat on the couch while the others did their own things, thinking about how their parents would probably kill her and Kiara after finding out what they had done. But she knew they all had to help John B's father, they were in this together no matter what.
JJ noticed Kyla sitting by herself on the couch, just playing with her hair or looking at her nails in boredom. He didn't want to say anything to her until Pope, Cleo, and Kiara left the room, though.
"Hey, guys," he whispered to them before he gestured over to Kyla, raising his brows. The three of them seemed to get the memo and they nodded at him, walking off into a different room.
The blonde then turned back to Kyla, who didn't seem to notice that they had left. He then sucked in a breath and prepared himself for the conversation he wanted to have with her before he sat down next to her.
Kyla side-eyed him before she looked back forward to see that everyone had gone somewhere else. Shit, she thought to herself, not knowing how she was going to be able to compose herself.
"Hey, Ky," JJ greeted since Kyla wasn't acknowledging his presence just yet.
"Hi," she said in response, still not looking his way.
"Um, okay, so...about what happened between us last time..." he began, which made Kyla's stomach drop in anticipation. Is he going to take back what he said? Did he realize he was wrong? she questioned in her mind, hoping that would be the case even though she was mad at him. "So, like, you know, that whole entire money clip and Dad situation?"
Kyla immediately looked over at him, blinking in confusion. That's what he wants to talk about? Not about our relationship? What the actual fuck?
She cleared her throat, growing upset to the point where she wanted to start crying again. "Uh, yeah."
"Well, um, that wasn't that cool, and I'm kinda beating around the bush a little bit, but, um, I'm..." he trailed off before he looked forward, something catching his eye.
"Your what?" she questioned, wanting him to get to the point already. At that point, she didn't even care about him stealing her dad's money clip; she just cared about their relationship.
JJ didn't answer her as he got up from his seat, his gaze still not tearing away from where he had been looking at. "What is it?" Kyla asked as she also got up, growing concerned by the look on his face. She then looked out the window and saw the orange flames that had been emerging outside the house. "Oh, my God," she breathed out, her eyes widening.
"Yo, that's a fire. We gotta tell 'em! Tell 'em!" JJ told Kyla before she started to rush off to warn the others. "Hey, fire! Yo!"
"Guys!" Kyla yelled before she opened the door, walking in on Sarah and John B making out. "Sorry! But there's a fire!"
"What?" John B replied, immediately getting serious.
"Fire? Wait, what?" Sarah spoke in confusion.
"Wait, Ky, what are you talking about?" John B questioned.
"Kie! Kiara!" Kyla screamed to find her sister before she opened another door, seeing her sister, Pope, and Cleo in the room. "The house is on fire!"
"What?!" Kiara exclaimed before they all rushed out of the room, trying to find an exit.
"A fire?!" both Cleo and Pope shouted.
"Come on, we gotta get outta here!" JJ urgently stated before they all tried finding a way out that wasn't blocked by the burning hot flames.
