Adoption day
23rd April 2016
I was just 47 days old when my Foster parent suddenly packed me in a little blue basket with my brother and took us downstairs.
It was a hot day but the air conditioning was on. My father was waiting by the door. He was watching our guests very seriously.
There were three women sitting on the sofa. My foster mother was sitting opposite them. They were talking and laughing about stuff. When they saw my foster brother coming with us, they stopped.
The look on their face was nothing like I had seen before.
Once the basket opened, the smallest of the women put her hand in. My brother took this opportunity to impress by licking her hand non-stop.
I was in a hurry to climb out.
Two women were playing with me, petting my head and tickling my belly. I liked it. Then I turned to my brother who was being cuddled by the other women.
I knew what was happening. It was adoption day. One of us were getting a home.
Of course I wanted to be adopted, but my brother and I were the last ones left, I dint want him to be alone.
When they finally put us down, we walked around the room for a while to impress them and when they were distracted, talking about us, we both crawled under the sofa and began to talk.( humans can't hear us)
"They seem fine." My brother said
"I don't like the small one. Hugs too much." I said, peeking from under the sofa.
"I enjoyed that part." He laughed.
Then we were silent. One of us would be left behind.... But who?
We could hear the humans try and cox us out. We decided to play with them for a while. At least until we decided who should go with them.
For the next 10 minutes we let them chase us all around the room.
"These humans are exhausting!" My brother called from across the room as the small human chased him.
"So you don't want them?" I asked.
Distracted for a moment, I ran straight into my Foster brother, who picked me up and handed me straight to the smaller human.
She hugged me again. I was so close to her face that I could see all her teeth. I looked down at my brother who have me an encouraging smile.
I gulped.
Suddenly they put me back in the blue basket. Was I wrong? Did he choose my brother instead?
I watched through the gaps as the smallest human pick up the basket and wave good bye.
"Sorry!" The small human told my brother. "I wish I could take you too!!"
I put my head down, not able to see much now. Then I realised I would never see my brother or that house again.
