━━━━━━INTERVIEW
Q 1: What has been providing you with your biggest support while writing?
Answer: The passion to share stories and give a voice to people who can't share their own stories. Nobody in my non-virtual life knows I write. Wattpad, though, has been a huge support. The friends I've made on this site are more important to me than I can say.
Q2: Are there any books or authors that inspired you to become a writer?
Answer: I was an avid classics reader as a child. Oscar Wilde, Charlotte Bronte, Virginia Woolf, Charles Dickens got me into reading. Reading contemporary books made me want to rewrite the endings. That's what got me into writing.
Q3: What authors did you dislike at first but then develop an appreciation for?
Answer: I don't think there's any author I dislike, whether on or off Wattpad. I read the book regardless of who wrote it. If a work is good, grabs my attention, and makes me feel something, I don't care if it was written by a best-selling author or by someone nobody knows.
Q4: How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?
Answer: I've been lucky to not have too many negative comments or reviews. When I get an occasional bit of negative feedback, though, I first try to understand the motivation behind it. Some people are trolls and tend to leave hate without reason. However, if the feedback is legitimate and helpful, I tend to rethink and learn and proceed accordingly.
Q5: What is the most difficult part of your writing process?
Answer: Making the time for it. With a full-time job and university, it's hard to make the time to sit for a couple of hours, clear my head, and write.
Q6: How long have you been writing or when did you start?
Answer: I started writing short stories and poems around ten years ago when I was going through a rough patch in my life. My first full-length novel came around five years ago, but I never shared it with anyone. I joined Wattpad in early 2018 but only started writing by the end of it. So I've been writing properly for three years now.
Q7: What advice would you give to a writer working on their first book?
Answer: Don't give up, don't stop, but also don't be rigid. Learn from what everyone is saying, even if it feels mean and uncalled-for. Pay attention to language structures and plot points and character development. Don't follow the crowd.
Q8: What, to you, are the most important elements of good writing?
Answer: Good grammar and spelling is key. Sentence structure can make or break a story. A sound plot and relatable characters are key. And for me, a good message goes beyond the obvious.
Q9: What part of your books was the most fun to write?
Answer: The end, because I love how involved everyone is by that point and you know exactly what you're going to do.
Q10: Which of the characters do you relate to the most and why?
Answer: I relate to most of my characters at some level. Do I support their actions? No. But I do understand where they're coming from.
Q11: What was your hardest scene to write, and why?
Answer: Sex scenes are impossible for me to write. I don't read or write smut so writing something I have no knowledge of becomes kind of a struggle.
Q12: Would you and your main character (in your most favourite book) get along?
Answer: Of my own stories? Yes. Of my favourite books, also yes.
Q13: If you could meet your characters, what would you say to them?
Answer: I'd say sorry for putting them through so much but people love them.
Q14: What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?
Answer: Music.
Q15: When was the last time you Googled yourself and what did you find?
Answer: A few months ago when my friends googled me and found my Wattpad profile.
Q16: If your book were made into a movie, which actors would play your characters?
Answer: I've never actually thought about it.
Q17: What is the most valuable piece of advice you've been given about writing?
Answer: That I should write what I love, not what anyone else wants me to write.
Q18: What do you think is the best way to improve writing skills?
Answer: Read good books and write write write.
Q19: What advice would you give to help others create plotlines?
Answer: Think with the end in mind. Have starting and ending points and all the major events lined in between. Have the fillers only when essential. Most stories don't need fillers.
Q20: What has helped or hindered you most when writing a book?
Answer: Helped- passion. Hindered- real life.
Q21: What is the best money you've ever spent with regard to your writing?
Answer: I've never spent any money on my writing. I instead buy books a lot which in turn makes me a better writer.
Q22: What are common traps for new authors?
Answer: Following the crowd or trying to write what's 'popular'.
Q23: Who's your most favourite commenter(on your wattpad books) and why? And drop their '@' if you want them to know. (we'll mention them)
Answer: I have so many. I'll be selfish, though, and tag my friends lookingintomybrain and worksoflouise and redrobinjay.
Q24: Last question, what would you like to say to the authors and newly blooming writers who are reading this interview?
Answer: I'd say be you, be patient, and be unique. The world doesn't need more replicas of the same story. It needs your voice, your unique perspective, your thoughts and opinions. Don't be swayed by the trends, the waves, or by the wants of the audience. Write what you love and people with similar tastes will find you. Good luck!
