Brotherly Bonding (Part Three)

Tim absolutely loved the butterflies. He always found the insects calming and pretty to look at. Tim read about all kinds of butterflies and where they came from. If his brothers found out, it'd be the death of him.

Tim stood next to Damian, but he kept his distance. As much as Tim hated to admit it, he was scared by Damian. He kept his room locked every night because he was afraid Damian would kill him in his sleep, or catch him in his sleep deprived state. And Tim was usually in his sleep deprived state.

As Tim looked at the butterflies, his mind wandered to other places. He was excited to work with Peter to create a tear in time and space to contact Bruce, it was the only way to do it or else the Court would be on their ass. Tim knows that the Court wants the boys to create a machine to open a portal because then they could use the portal in Gotham to create a two way dimension portal. It was a lot to process but Tim had it all planned. But there were plot holes and Tim wished he could close them, but he was stuck with Damian looking at butterflies.

"Asterope markii, are one of my favorites."

Tim broke out of his gaze and turned his head to Damian. Was he actually talking to him?

"What?" Tim asked, not remembering what Damian said before.

"Asterope markii. They're one of my favorites. How about you?" Damian asked. Tim had to blink a few times just to make sure Damian was talking to him. Sure they've been spitting out facts about each animal they made paths with but that was just silly bantering, Damian never actually talked to Tim.

"I like the Ornithoptera priamus." Tim said.

"Did you know that they are sexually dimorphic?" Damian asked. Tim nodded in response.

"I always found animals superior to humans."

"No kidding." Tim said with a smirk.

"My entire life I was surrounded by evil and animals are just pure good." Damian said. Although he wasn't sure he was talking to Tim. Damian hated that all of these feelings were coming back to him. It was annoying and stupid but no matter how much Damian pushed them down they kept reappearing.

Humans were annoying and took whatever they wanted without asking for it. But animals, bugs, insects, they just lived in nature with their cycle. They created families and habitats. It was the circle of life. Yes, Damian was guilty of watching The Lion King, but he would never say that out loud.

Damian loved animals way more than humans. Well some humans were okay. There was Grayson, who Damian loved like a brother. Drake was well, not a brother since all they do is fight and argue. Drake was like a roommate. But Damian wished to have a brother relationship with him, they've been living together and working together. Damian would never admit it but he was always jealous of how smart Drake was, and how Batman trusted him more than his own biological son.

Todd was, well how would Damian put it into words? Well, Todd was the worst human being Damian ever met. Damian would question why his own mother wanted to give Todd a chance. Todd was reckless and dangerous. But the same thing could be said about Damian.

Damian looked back to where Todd was. He was just standing and looking at a random butterfly. Damian wanted to hate him but this entire trip all he felt was pity for the second robin. Maybe that was just because he bought Damian a bunch of things because of the chili dog incident. Damian knew it was an accident.

Damian knew he was a dick to Todd at times. And Damian would say he didn't care but actually he really, really did. He hated himself when he got Todd that crowbar, knowing it brought back unwanted memories. Great, now he felt guilty. Damian could remember that day.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Here Todd. Hope you like it." Damian said as he handed the nicely gift wrapped box to Jason.
It was a miracle that Jason decided to even show up for his birthday. Damian suspected Tim had something to do with it but he wasn't going to ask, mostly because he didn't care.
But Jason was here. Damian had helped get decoration up with Damian while Tim and Pennyworth were decorating the cake. Bruce was in the Batcave, tying loose ends so nothing can ruin the night. He even bought fancy drinks that did not have alcohol. Jason was only turning twenty.
"Hey Dami! Got your end?" Dick asked. Damian nodded and got down from the chair. Finally all the streamers were done. He thought it would take forever.
"This is looking very nice." Dick said as he looked up at their work.
">tt< I still don't understand why we had to do the entire ceiling. It looks like a unicorn exploded on the ceiling." Damian said.
"C'mon Damian it's for Jason. He deserves this." Dick smiled. Damian didn't. He didn't understand why Jason needed so much attention and to be treated like a child. It was stupid. Why couldn't they do a normal birthday party?
"But still, this is too much. It's not like Todd is bringing Koriander and his boyfriend." Damian said as he sat down on the sofa. Dick sighed but smiled at the same time.
"It's just a family thing Damian. It's a Wayne tradition to throw the best parties for family. When I was thirteen, Bruce and Alfred decorated the entire mansion with streamers and confetti and balloons, it was a blast." Dick said as he placed a few balloons around the mansion. Damian still didn't care.
"Are you sure it's not just because you weren't there for Todd as a kid and you're trying to make up for it now? Well too little too late Grayson." Damian said. Just as he said that Tim and Alfred came into the living room with shocked faces, eyes widened. And Dick stopped whatever he was doing and looked down. Damian immediately knew it was a big mistake.
"Mater Damian I-!"
"No Alfred. It's okay." Dick said, cutting off Alfred. Damian got up from his seat and went to Dick, head down.
"I apologize. It was rude of me to say." Damian said with shame. Dick kneeled down to his level.
"No, you're right Damian. I was never there for Jason when he was young. And that is the biggest regret I have. That's the entire reason why I decided to be there more for you and Tim. Cause I let one of my brothers down already, wasn't gonna let the other two down." Dick chuckled, but it was full of sadness.
"Let's just try to give Jason the best birthday there is okay? We owe him that. Why don't you go and finish wrapping your present for him, okay?" Dick suggested. Damian nodded and went upstairs. But as he went up the stairs he heard the three talking.
"Dick you can't just keep sucking up to Damian like that. Show some authority!" Tim yelled at Dick.
"Tim, he's still learning. You can't blame him." Dick shyly said.
"No, he needs to show some respect to us, to Jason." Tim said. Damian rolled his eyes, Tim always came to Jason's defense.
"Well it's kind of hard to show Jason respect when he keeps on saying how he'll kill the kid in his sleep if he slips up!" A beat of silence.
" Uh, you didn't hear that from me!" Dick quickly said.
"Master Tim! Master Dick! Shall we quit this bickering and continue setting up?" Alfred asked. And that's when Damian went up the stairs, ears fuming.
Damian was finally getting over hating Jason and now that card is pulled?! Well fine, if Jason hated Damian so much then he'll just prove to him how evil he is!.
As Damian went to his bed, where a box and gift wrapped lied he sat on the bed and opened the box.
Inside was a big book. It was black but had fancy silver linear art on it. The title read "Scary Stories To Read At Midnight." It was a collection of scary stories by one author brought together in a three hundred and sixteen page book. Damian learned from Alfred that Jason loved to read and even read Shakespeare, which made Damian realize Jason wasn't as much of an airhead as he assumed him to be. Damian took so much time in Barnes and Noble to find the perfect book for Jason.
But all that thoughtfulness was now filled with hatred.
"I'll show you how evil I am Todd." Damian said to himself as he put the book in his shelf of personal books and went to his closet and fished out a crowbar. Damian didn't exactly remember where he got the crowbar, but it was definitely on a mission.
Damian angrily placed the crowbar in the box and put tissue paper on top of it and then put the lid and gift wrapped it, and added a bow.
Once Jason had shown the party began. Jason mainly talked to Tim and Alfred but eventually they all sat down and discussed missions and funny memories. Bruce even smiled. Damian was eventually getting in on the conversation. It truly felt like a family moment.
Soon Alfred brought out the cake. It was green. Jason's favorite color. And Bruce got out Napoleon ice cream. It was Jason's favorite. Damian actually believed Jason had good taste.
Then it was time for presents. Bruce gave his first. It was a box of rubber bullets. Typical of Bruce wanting to make sure Jason kept on his promise of no killing. Jason laughed off the gift but took it anyway.
Alfred then gave him. It was a collection of Shakespeare plays, which Jason loved. It's been a while since Jason was able to get his hands on Shakespeare so he was glad for the gift.
Dick then gave his gift. It was a credit card, a fake one of course. Barbra hacked into it so it would always work. Dick wanted to make sure Jason had money wherever he was, even if it wasn't legal. Bruce gave a disappointing look but didn't say anything.
Tim then gave his gift, which he made. It was a holographic scanner which could scan anything and give you statistics of the building when it was made, what it was made off, and it's weak points. It also scans the human body so after missions he could scan his friends and make sure they don't have any injuries they couldn't see.
Finally it was Damian's turn. He went upstairs to get his gift. As he got it he looked back to where his actual gift was. Damian knew he should've given Jason the book, but he didn't.
"Here Todd. Hope you like it." Damian said as he handed the nicely gift wrapped box to Todd.
Jason took the gift with a smile and opened it up. He took off the tissue paper as well, with a chuckle. Damian knew it was now too little, too late.
As Jason took out the crowbar the room went silent. No one spoke. No one breathed. All eyes were on Jason, and the crowbar in his hand.
"Well Todd? What do you think?" Damian sneered at Jason. Jason continued to look at the crowbar, then to Damian. And then back to the crowbar.
Then suddenly Jason got up and threw the crowbar at the family portrait. The crowbar hit the portrait where Damian's head was with harsh accurate aim. When the crowbar hit Tim and Dick flinched.
"Fuck you demon." Was all Jason said before he grabbed his previous gifts and his bag and ran out the door.
"Jason!"
"Master Jason!"
Dick, Bruce, and Alfred said at the same time. Dick and Alfred ran to get to Jason. Bruce did too, but before he did he looked at Damian.
"That was a new low, even for you Damian."
As Bruce left it was just Tim and Damian.
"Well aren't you going to say anything Drake?!" Damian yelled to Tim. Tim shook his head and looked Damian in the eye.
"Jason was right about you. How could you even do that?! Can't you just be a normal kid for once and not an evil brat?!" Tim said. The words pierced through Damian's heart like a sword. Damian looked down, truly realizing what he had done.
"I-I. I'm sorry! I didn't mean to! I-" But Tim left to get Jason before Damian could finish. Now Damian was alone.
Damian went to his room, his dog, Titus followed. And Damian cried himself to sleep that night,
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Drake, I know I've been....difficult." Was all Damian could say to Tim. Tim raised an eyebrow. In his mind he was screaming, 'Ya think?!'. But Tim didn't say that out loud.

"You're referring to Jason's birthday aren't you?" Tim said.

"How did you know?"

"You looked back to Jason. I just put the two together. You know I still don;t forgive you for that." Tim said.

"Believe me, I don't forgive myself either." Damian said with shame. Tim raised an eyebrow.

"You don't?"

"I have a heart you know." Damian said angrily, but he took a breath. He needed to calm down.

"I was going to give him a very different gift but I-I just got so angry that Todd only sees me as evil and I know it was stupid but-"

"Woah Damian. Jason doesn't necessarily hate you. Sure at times he can but he has some respect for you. I mean you two are pretty similar." Tim said.

"Then how come with Todd you treat him like a brother but with me you still lock your door at night?" Yeah Damian knew. It was another thing he resented Tim for.

"Maybe I lock my door at night because of things like that. You get so angry that it isn't even you anymore Damian, it's a.......a demon. I don't want to be afraid of you but you make it so hard for me. I want to be more of a brother to you." Tim admitted. Damian's eyes were wide. He never thought Tim would want that.

"How about if we start over." Damian suggested. Tim smiled.

"I'd like that. But that means you have to make things right with Jason as well." Tim said. Damian looked over to Jason again, he was with Dick. They were talking, he didn't know what they were saying. Damian wished he could read lips like Jason. But Damian mostly wished to be part of the conversation. He wanted to make things right.

"Deal."
