War, Death & Money
Who knew I would end up in this situation.
I always had a normal, average life. I only wanted to live a peaceful, normal life and now I feel like I'm dying. As if all my energy and spirit is being drained from my body slowly. There's only darkness left.
What took me here? What brought me to this point? Has this always been my destiny? I don't think so.
When did my life change? When did my path change? I can't figure it out, the exact moment it happened, but I know everything started to change after that day. The day I met a Mythical for the first time.
I remember this day and all the others that came after vividly.
It was the day of My first meeting with a Mythical. More importantly, my first meeting with one of the big five.
The big five were the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the country, if not the world, that have flourished when everything else went bad.
For many years, scientists had warned the world about the risks and consequences of overusing nuclear power. However, in the last world war every country was determined to win and so the nuclear war was born.
Despite only targeting one person at a time or affect small areas like grenades, the weapons used still had leaks of nuclear energy.
When the war was over, both the soil and air were contaminated with radiation. Disease and death spread through the world.
More people died after the war ended than at the peak of the war.
This, of course, was hundred years ago and despite the massive decline of the world population, as resilient beings, humans had once again survived its self-destruction.
The big five were created then. They started developing medical treatments to cure or at least help the people infected with the radioactive diseases the war created.
Even to this day, there are still people infected and in need of medicine to survive. This, of course, makes the happiness of the big five.
I wanted to help people as much as I could, especially my childhood friend who's also a victim of the war collateral damage.
That's what brought me to work under Eleonor Smith, this amazing, intelligent woman who was able to make it to the top in one of the biggest biochemical companies of the country at a young age.
My thoughts were interrupted by a sweet yet strong female voice.
"Ready for your first meeting?" said Eleonor, from behind me.
I turned to face her with the most secure, but clearly insecure smile I could give her, "Hmm, yes. I think so."
"I hope you are, this is a very important client and an extremely important deal."
Thanks for the pressure! That's really helpful.
Eleonor was my superior and tried to be as professional as she could. She took her job seriously making her sometimes come out as a cold and arrogant person. Some people used more offensive words to describe her, but I knew that in reality, she was caring and nice.
I mean she did give me a job when I didn't have any experience whatsoever, saying that the company needed idealists like me. When I started working she helped me a lot, advised me and taught me everything I didn't know.
Today she trusts me, the youngest and less experienced person here, to present the compounds I found toa big client. I have to be extra good as a repayment for everything she has done for me.
We arrived at the meeting room and prepared it. I placed a report copy in front of each of the five chairs around the shining wooden table. We stayed there discussing some details until James, Eleonor's assistant, entered the room.
"Eleonor, they're here," he said.
"Good."
She left to welcome the people I was so afraid to meet. I tried to calm my nerves through breathing exercises, but my hands couldn't stop tapping my thighs. A few moments later she was back with three men and I froze, feeling all my muscles tense.
"Please come on in. This is Elisa Blake, the biochemist behind these findings," she said, gesturing them to come in, "Elisa, this is Wyatt and Clark, heads of the R&D and Marketing departments of BioHealth."
I shook their hands.
"And this is Adrian Dumas," she continued.
I was shocked to see that the CEO was only a little bit older than me, or at least he looked like it.
Eleonor had told me that he was a vampire and I knew vampires were usually attractive creatures, but I wasn't expecting him to be this beautiful. Every woman could fall for him at first sight.
His sharp jaw, his stubble, his golden brown hair... Everything was perfect. And his eyes... God, his silver eyes were magnificent, surrounded by magnificent long, thick, black eyelashes.
I looked at him, straight into his eyes, feeling almost hypnotized.
A burning sensation in my eyes made me snap out of my reverie and realize that I probably stared at him for too long without blinking. I thought that I probably looked like a crazy person and immediately felt my face burning with embarrassment.
I moved closer to greet him and felt the warmth radiating from his body which surprised me as I thought vampires were literally cold beings.
I extended my hand to shake his.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, sir."
He smiled, "Please call me Adrian. Shall we start then?"
He had a melodious and soft yet masculine voice and a slight accent. French? Maybe British? It didn't matter, everything about him was charming.
Maybe it's a natural trait that vampires have to attract their natural prey.
We all sat around the table and Eleonor started explaining the basic properties of the compounds, then it was my turn to talk.
I took a deep breath.
"These compounds are quite easy to extract, and they can actually be mixed together without losing any of their functions," I started. "Some of them are even more effective when mixed with the others, so I think you can create a unique medicine that treats all symptoms of the R50 disease."
"That is indeed very interesting," Adrian said.
"And with these properties, you can lower the cost of production and thus reduce the price of the medicine, as you can see on page 5."
He nodded in understanding. "But that wouldn't be very profitable now, would it?"
I was shocked. I never understood how someone could put money before people's health, but it was the first time I heard someone admitting to it so bluntly.
How could he do that? How could someone that looked so perfect be so flawed?
I felt so infuriated. These compounds I found and extracted were supposed to help sick people and not rich healthy people. I didn't work so hard for this so they could throw it away to fill their pockets.
"By selling it at the usual prices this could be the most profitable medicine we've ever produced Adrian," Wyatt affirmed.
"What?! Why would you do that?! What about people that don't have the money to buy medicine?! If you lower the price, and you can, everyone could have access to it and you would still have profit!" I snapped.
Eleonor turned her blonde head to give me a warning look. I didn't care, this was so revolting!
"It's called Natural Selection. Unfortunately, not everyone can survive these times," Adrian stated.
"No! It's called privilege!" I blurted out. But who was I kidding, he already knew that. He himself was probably a privileged brat.
"Lisa!" Eleonor warned.
"It's ok, Eleonor. I rather have people that speak their mind then hypocrites who are constantly kissing my arse," Adrian smirked.
I wished I could just knock that arrogant smile off his face.
A few minutes later the meeting was over and, to Eleonor's relief, the deal was signed.
"What were you thinking Lisa? I've told you this deal was important, and you could have ruined it!" she said angrily.
"I'm really sorry, I-"
"You were lucky Lisa! Very lucky that we were dealing with Adrian and not another CEO," she cut me off. "If you had messed up everything you would be unemployed right now."
I nodded in acceptance. She was right. I was lucky that Adrian didn't consider my words. And I was mostly lucky that my superior was Eleonor, anyone else would probably have fired me just by my remarks.
"Do you know him well?"
"I've met him quite a few times over the years I've been working in this field. He's not like most of the CEOs I've met. He is more open-minded and respectful of others."
"Tell that to the poor people that are going to die and suffer because he wants profit," I hissed.
"Aren't you supposed to be smart Lisa? You should know better than assume things without doing your research first," she said as she entered her office.
And so, I did. I was completely wrong about Adrian and his company. They actually sold important medicines at very affordable prices and even created various campaigns to deliver medicine to less fortunate.
I felt ashamed for the way I treated him and thought about him. But then again why would he talk as if he didn't care?
Was it fun for him to make a fool out of me?
Was he trying to prove something?
Or was he just messing with me and my job?
I didn't know any Mythicalpersonally. Sure, I've seen Mythicals in and outside my workplace, but Adrian was the first I'd interacted with and I have to say that I didn't like it.
I know we could say that Mythicals are superior to us humans. It's the truth, they have powers and physical traits that make them stronger than us, but that's not a reason for them to act all arrogant and superior like Adrian did. And certainly not a reason to mess with me.
If all of them are like this then I understand why there are so many people that still hate them despite our peace treaties.
Anyway, it doesn't matter, I must apologize the next time I see him. I mean, if I see him again.
Yes, that was probably the day where my life started changing its course.
Hi guys!
Thank you for giving this story a shot 😄
I know this might not be the best first chapter but please keep reading this story. It gets better, I promise!
Please tell me what you think.
What are your thoughts about Adrian and Eleonor so far?
Once again, thank you so much!
