Mama, I just killed a man

I let my fingers run over the old books that filled the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves that kept the right wall of the study room hidden.

I took all the non-fiction books related to vampires and placed them on the floor near the fainting couch. I sat cross-legged on the couch and began to read the first book of the selection.

Most of the books focused o techniques to kill vampires, including an atlas of weapons to be used against vampires.

One of the books explained that garlic's odor deters vampires due to their keener sense of smell, making me laugh at the idea of pranking Adrian with it.

The same book talked about various plants that could weaken vampires, such as roses, dog rose, holly, linden flower, and mayflower.

Funny enough, I could find all these plants in our garden. And of course, Wolfsbane was also on that list.

I also found out that iron weapons could bypass vampires' healing powers and if a wound caused by these weapons was left untreated, vampires could begin to fester and rot.

The next book, entitled 'Vampires' Strengths and Weaknesses' stated that sprinkle seeds or grains on the ground will force vampires to pick them up because of their obsessive nature. That was certainly a curious weakness. I never noticed that in Adrian. Then again, his house is tidy.

I only found useful information for Violet's case in the last book. It was about the transformation process of humans into vampires.

Basically, vampire fangs release venom, so when they bite a human that venom spreads through the human body. After that, if the human drink the blood of the vampire that bit him within twenty-four hours the transformation starts.

In addition to this, when mixed, vampire blood will alter human blood; however, the book didn't explain what types of changes can occur.

I now know that I can't just mix Violet's and Adrian's bloods. I would have to look for an antigen capable of inducing an immune response to Violet's disease. It would be a challenge; nevertheless, a challenge that I must overcome.

I decided to start reading my ancestors' notes before lunch. I activated the secret system to unlock the secret door hidden under the form of a bookshelf.

How creative.

I opened the door and walked down the stone stairs. Our secret basement was small. It only had a wooden desk, two classical accent chairs safe and four old-wooden trunks. I started going through the trunks that stored the notes.

I ended up not eating lunch as I was immersed in these parchments filled with different handwritings. My great-great-grandfather, William, was the only one whose notes had new and interesting information.

14 March 2544

The body of a young man was found in the Redhill wood. All the hunters of the region were summoned to the site to assess the situation.

We couldn't identify what creature was responsible for the attack, but it was definitely a Mythical. We found werewolf footprints near the body, but they were much bigger than usual.

The body had various injuries, some could have been done by vampires, others by ogres and werewolves. The tree behind the body was broken, probably due to the impact of the body which could be a sign of extreme strength.

16 March 2544

I've spoken to my young friend about the attack. He told me that he would investigate it, but he doesn't believe that the author of the attack was a vampire.

I still can't believe that I've become friends with him. It took me fifty years to trust someone like him. I never thought that someone like him could be capable of kindness. Until now I only saw cruelty in the eyes of the likes of him, but he and his family were different.

02 June 2544

Other attacks have been reported in the neighboring regions. All hunters are now trying to hunt the creature down.

An ogre hunter was able to recover a DNA sample of the creature before dying. The analyses' results showed that this creature was a hybrid. It shared DNA with vampires, werewolves, and ogres.

We've been tracking it down and planning a surprise attack.

21 June 2544

We found the hybrid and attacked him. We assemble a team with the best vampire, werewolf and ogre hunters, but were unable to kill the beast. It recovered from its injuries faster than any creature, I even manage to stab it in the heart with a silver stake, but it just removed it and healed.

I remembered an old tale my mother used to tell me when I was a child. It was the story of a hybrid creature that could only be killed by the ultimate weapon. This weapon was a special sword created by one of our ancestors.

The blade of the sword was made of iron and silver that would burn in the presence of an enemy.

The sword is said to be as light as a feather and as piercing and sharp as a needle.

Unfortunately, the notes of our ancestor were lost during a fire, so I needed to find clues about the whereabouts of the sword in the words of this old tale.

10 July 2544

I finally found the sword. All this time I've been searching for clues and it was right under my nose. It has been stored in our secret bunker.

We planned a new attack and this time I was able to kill the creature. Now our family name is known everywhere.

The Blake family has always been a prestigious hunter's family and today I honored our ancestors and our family history.

11 April 2545

I've been followed. I know they're spying on me. I know they want it.

I've received threats. They want the sword otherwise they will kill my family.

They want power, they want to rule the world, and if I give them the sword they will. So I can't give them the sword, because they will use it to bring hell to earth.

I can't give up on my family either. I need to protect them. I've been trying to hide, but they always manage to find us. Now there's only one option.

13 April 2545

I entrusted the sword to my young, trustworthy young friend. He will keep it safe and I know he would not misuse it.

Today will probably be my last day in this house. They're coming for me and my family.

My dear wife has been extremely supportive. I know she is in pain. So am I, but I feel peaceful, knowing that she and our children will be safe.

That was the last note of William.

Since the room has no windows I didn't see the time pass. I came out of the basement and locked it up. The darkness filled the windows of the study room.

I suddenly felt my hands and legs shaking. That's what happens when I'm immersed in something. I don't feel hunger and forget to eat, making my body weak from nutrient deprivation.

I went to the kitchen to eat dinner before going to sleep.

I woke up the next day feeling somewhat peaceful. I was a little bit closer to find a cure for Violet. Well, at least I knew where to start now. Somewhat I also feel that what I've learned about my ancestors changed me in ways I couldn't understand.

Today's mission was to find our secret bunker. I decided to start my search after lunch.

I penetrated the forest behind our house feeling like it was the right path to walk. I can't explain it, but there's something attracting me in the forest. It's like a silent voice is calling my name to show me the way.

A few minutes later I saw a giant boulder covered with moss. There was something almost magical about that boulder. I came close to it and noticed something engraved. It was definitely a bunch of words, but the time had made it hard to read.

I tried to recreate the forms using a stick and managed to unveil what was written.

'The path opens only to those worthy of the living blood.'

Ok, what is that suppose to mean?

As I slowly ran my fingers over the mysterious text I felt a small pain in my finger. I looked at it and saw it had a small cut.

Lucky me.

I heard a noise and the floor under me started shaking. I stepped aside and saw the boulder moving, unveiling a steel stairway going down into darkness.

I turned up my phone's flashlight, but as I walked down the stairs hidden LEDs lit up the way. I soon arrived into a narrow but long room. The room had steel tables and shelves against its walls. Some shelves had food cans, but most of them were filled with hunter's weapons.

I let my hand caress each silver weapon until I reached an elegant silver dagger. I felt compelled to take it.

The cold metal felt like home under my fingers. The familiar feeling I had as I held and danced with it was inexplicable.

"Finally," a deep-creepy voice talked.

I flinched as I heard that unknown voice. I turned around to see a man I've never seen before standing in front of the stairs, looking at me with lust in his eyes.

"Who are you?"

"Now Love, that's not important. What's important is that I'm finally getting what I want." He smirked.

"And what is it that you want?" I asked calmly, although my nerves were screaming inside me.

"The ultimate weapon, of course. The sword that stupid William refused to give me."

"Were you the one who murdered him?"

"What?" he laughed, "No Love, I'm not that stupid. I don't know who did it, but it was completely stupid. His death was the worst thing that happened to me. Because of that, I had to wait for one of his descendants to come here and open the vault."

"You had to wait for me," I whispered.

"Do you have any idea what it's like to wait for centuries for something that might never happen?" His voice was shaking.

He sounded crazy like he was having a meltdown. I guess that's what happens when you wait for so many years.

"Now Love, tell me. Where did that old rat hide the sword?"

"I don't know."

"Don't play games with me," his eyes turned into the color of blood. He grabbed my neck and lifted me up with one hand.

I could barely breathe. "I'm not... playing games. He... gave it away."

I felt his grip tightened around my neck.

"Who?! Who has the sword?!"

I lifted my hand to try to use the silver dagger I was still holding against him, but I only managed to make a small cut on his forearm. Nonetheless, it was enough for him to scream in pain and release me.

I fell to the ground and stood on my knees as I tried to catch my breath. I looked up and saw him grabbing where I made the cut.

"Bitch! That burns!"

"Oh, does it really? I'm sorry, maybe you want mommy to kiss it better?"

"I'm going to kill you! Forget about the stupid sword!"

He lunged at me quickly. I didn't even see him moving, I just felt my body flying and hitting the wall. My vision was filled with tiny black dots.

I shook my head and got up in pain, but I quickly fell down again as he punched my stomach. I coughed blood. I tried to defend myself as I could, but he was to fast.

He kicked me and then drag me by my hair near one of the shelves full of weapons. He made me sit against the shelve and took one of the many silver knives.

He kneeled in front of me and started caressing my face with the blade. He slid it down tracing my figure and brought it up to my chin lifting it.

"This will be fun." He grinned. "Last chance Love. Who has the sword?"

"I don't know, and even if I did, I wouldn't tell you," I spat despite my vulnerable position.

He slapped my face and then grabbed me by the chin and raised my head, so I was forced to look at him. I could feel the tears in the corner of my eyes ready to fall from the pain, but I was holding it. I didn't want to show any kind of weakness.

"Now let's save that pretty face for later," he gave me a mischievous grin.

He took my right arm and started cutting it slowly. I couldn't stop the scream escaping my lips. He laughed. "That's the punishment for cutting me before. Now, the punishment for your lack of cooperation."

He punched my stomach again and I spat more blood. He brought the knife up again and started cutting my neck making sure not to hit any vein. He was going to torture me before killing me.

I manage to kick his family jewels. He let out a groan and pressed his lips together before slapping me again. He took me by the hair and throw me against the stone wall.

After that everything went black.

A deep voice brought me back. My body flinched, and I felt a warm liquid sliding down slowly on the side of my forehead. I touched it with the tip of my finger and as I brought my hand back down I saw blood.

"That's it Love. I don't want to kill you that quickly. I want to play with you first. Maybe I'll taste a little bit of that blood of yours." He licked his lips. "It sure smells delicio-"

He stopped as I looked up at him. I felt fire igniting my body, rage consuming my lungs and venom filling my eyes.

"What's wrong with your eyes Love?" His strong and firm tone changed. It was replaced by insecurity. He was afraid.

I didn't know what was wrong with my eyes, but I knew he feared it. I took the opportunity and launched a punch at him.

Bad idea. That punch definitely hurt me more than it hurt him.

He smirked. "Feisty."

I got up and kicked him, making him step back. I've always had more strength in my legs than in my arms.

Now he was angry again, I could see it in his eyes. He lunged at me again, but this time it was like I saw every one of his movements in slow-motion.

I dodged every punch he threw at me, but I knew I couldn't punch him back. My hand was still hurting from before.

I saw the silver dagger that I dropped when he hit me the first time and decided to run for it. As I grabbed the dagger I felt him pulling the back of my shirt and throwing me on the floor.

Who said humans don't fly?

This time I was still holding the dagger and as he launched at me again I dodged him and pierced his heart with the dagger.

He let out a scream of pain before falling on his knees. Soon after he was laying on the floor with his eyes lifeless.

I just killed someone.

My hands were shaking. I didn't know what to do. I needed help. There was a dead body on the floor and I was on the edge of having a panic attack.

Oh god! Oh god! What have I done? What should I do?

Should I call the police and explain that it was self-defense?

No, I can't. I was in the middle of a room full of weapons made to kill vampires, they would never believe me.

Breathe Lisa. Breathe.

There was only one thing I could do. Either call Levy or Adrian.

Hi everyone!

So, was it worth the wait? (I hope so)

I really hope you enjoyed this chapter as much as I did.
It was one of my favorites, I really enjoyed imagining and writing it.

Now, who you gonna call? (Ghostbusters)
If you're all alone
Pick up the phone
And call Ghostbusters

Now seriously (or not), if you were in Lisa shoes, who would you rather call and why?

And if you had a choice, would you rather be a member of the Brotherhood or a member of the Hunters Order?
