Brother and Sister

In the beginning, the world was empty. There was no ocean, only earth. One half of our planet lived under eternal daylight, while the other half suffered through pure darkness.

There was no green grass growing here, and no herbivores to consume it. No animals ever killed and ate other animals, as they did not exist at all.

There were no humans either, but there was Brother and Sister.

Brother and Sister were not like us. They looked like us, but they were better. Their strength was greater than that of fifty of the fittest men today. They could run at the speed of sound. They never developed wrinkles or grew gray hair. They were powerful, and thought themselves invincible.

One day, while Sister took in the rays of the bright sun, and Brother stared into the abyss of space, they decided to have a race.

They loved to compete with each other and had already had plenty of races before. However, this one would be different from the past races. Instead of competing for who could get to the finish line the fastest, they decided to see who could run for the longest time.

Sister tied back her rusty brown hair while Brother stretched next to her. They readied themselves, then took off.

The two siblings laughed as they ran. Although they loved each other very much, they couldn't help but taunt the other to give up. Yet they both went on, the satisfaction of winning giving them a reason to continue.

Eventually, the push of their feet against the dry, bare earth caused the planet to spin. And as they went faster, the spinning sped up. After several months, they finally began to grow tired, and they slowed down. However, the earth kept spinning, and it still does to this day.

A few more days passed until Brother, now more exhausted than before, decided to let his sister win and stopped running. Sister noticed him, stopping a hundred yards away from her brother and let out a cry of joy.

Brother laughed. Although he wanted to win, he loved to see how happy his sister was. Sister grinned at him, amber eyes glowing. Then slowly, her smile disappeared and her eyes darkened as she stared at something behind Brother.

"Brother!" she cried out.

It was too late.

Brother didn't have time to react before an enormous rock crashed on him.

"No!"

Sister ran to him and used her strength to move the rock. Brother's body was crushed badly, and his blood soaked the earth around him. His eyes were open, but they were not looking at anything.

Sister let out a cry, but not one of happiness. It was a cry of sorrow. In anger, she grabbed the large rock that had killed her brother and threw it out into space. However, it didn't go far before it began to spin around the earth, attracting bits of rock until it had gotten ten times bigger.

Heartbroken, Sister wailed, holding her dead brother's body close to her chest. Tears streamed down her face, creating puddles beneath her. She didn't stop crying and eventually her salty tears covered most of the earth.

As she sat there, her tears and Brother's blood began to mix and plants began to grow. Flowers bloomed, and trees loomed above them. Sister looked up and took in her surroundings. As beautiful as the earth was now, she could not live without her brother. She lay herself next to him, closed her eyes, and soon passed away.

Brother and Sister lay in the grass they had created. Lifeless, but together.

Their bodies turned to ash and out of that pile of ash insects, birds, primates, and other animals rose. They explored their new home, not knowing of the tragedy that had occurred before their creation.

Thousands of years later, the first humans would appear, the lesser versions of Brother and Sister.

Forever will the spirits of those siblings be around us, for it was out of their death that we were born.
