"Read My Mind" The Killers

"Come on in. We'll get started on the project as soon as I clean my desk."
Junhyeok opened his door with some difficulty and beckoned Sungjin in with a smile and a wave of his hand. The younger of the two had proposed that they, as second-year classmates who had been paired together for their literature project, should meet at his house to discuss ideas and to begin formulating their presentation.
What he had forgotten to do the day before was to clean his room.
Blankets and different-flavored milk containers littered the bed, empty yogurt cups and a deflated futbol took up the desk. Disks scattered their way over the floor — CDs, Vinyls, DVDs... Sungjin stared and stared, unable to tear his eyes away from the mess. "You know this is unsafe, right?.."
"Hmm," was Junhyeok's only answer as he shuffled over to his desk in his socks and began to shovel the empty yogurts into a garbage bag he found lying around somewhere near the entrance to his room. "You can take a seat on the chair."
Sungjin glanced at the seemingly only spotless item in the room — the red and black gaming chair positioned in front of a slightly dust-covered computer monitor on a smaller desk overtaken by candy wrappers and tissues set near the bed — and shook his head. "Nah, man. I'm helpin' ya clean."
"No—no, you don't have to—"
"Well—Ya don' havea say'n it," Sungjin interrupted him, rolling up his sleeves to reveal the long lines of veins streaming up them. Junhyeok gulped. "I'm helpin'ya clean."
"N—no, really— I mean it—" Junhyeok tried to end his classmate's attempts to help with flapping arms and an expression of great protest on his face, but the headstrong boy would not be stopped.
Sungjin picked another trash bag from under a heap of laundry hiding behind the barely-open door and began to rifle through the garbage littering the gaming desk.
"Oh... okay, then. You do you, man." Junhyeok gave up on his efforts to stop his classmate and sighed. He continued to clean his other desk in silence.
Soon enough, he had collected all of the cups. He sat himself down on the floor and was about to tie the bag so he could discard it when he heard a voice from above him. "You can recycle those, ya know?"
Junhyeok looked up at Sungjin, who was standing over him, obstructing the ceiling light and turning it as if a halo was shining around his beginning-to-grow-again shaven hair. Junhyeok gulped for the gazilionth time that day. "Yeah?"
"Yeah!" Sungjin grasped the edge of the bag Junhyeok was about to tie just now — his palm slid satisfyingly over Junhyeok's fingers, and BOY did that scatter the younger boy's thoughts or what — and he lifted it to his own level. "If ya just rinse them out a little in a tub'a water, it'll do the trick!"
"I— I see..." Junhyeok used his desk to prop himself up off the floor and led Sungjin out of the room (all the while trying not to stumble over something and embarrass himself) and into the bathroom. There was a yellow clothes-washing basin behind the toilet. He lifted it and handed it over to Sungjin. "Will this work?"
"Sure!" Sungjin sent him a knee-weakening grin (complete with twinkling eyes and almost unnoticeable under-lip crinkles which charmed the living heck out of Junhyeok, dammit) and dumped the yogurt cups into the basin. His nose crinkled in distaste. "How long've these been out there, sheesh..."
Junhyeok timidly scratched at his chin and whispered, "A few weeks, m—maybe..." in reply.
Sungjin's expression said it all. He was not impressed. "Don't do that anymore, okay?"
"No promises," Junhyeok regrettably spoke. He knew how hard it was to keep his word in such circumstances and lying to Sungjin didn't seem like the most favorable option.
"At least you're honest," Sungjin chuckled out, turning on the tap and beginning to pass his fingers over the crusty and yogurty bits inside the cups. Junhyeok's eyes followed the meticulous boy's movements and he almost missed the next words that came out of Sungjin's mouth. "I guess I'll have to come clean up for you every week, from now on..."
"N—no need," Junhyeok muttered, his face gleaming a flustered rouge.
"Yes need," Sungjin pushed, a laugh on his tongue. "It's easier to take care of your room and yourself with someone behind you, ya know?"
And — for some odd reason — this phrase triggered a long-lost memory in Junhyeok's mind.

Late-study session was finally over for first-year Junhyeok, and he was heading down the stairs in a hurry, all double-step at a dun-Dun—dunDUN pace. "Can't be late for my noona's recital, can't be late for noona's recital—" passed continuously from his muttering lips. Dun-Dun—dunDUN-dU— and suddenly, he was cascading forward. His heel had missed the base of this last step, hitting the corner instead of the center. His heart did a triple-flip, brain all fogged up in fear — and then it was over. He was upright, again, quite DANg miraculously, a weight holding him back by the collar of his school uniform.
Junhyeok glanced back in the lowering light of the sunset. A worried face flanked by dark, silky hair stared down at him from a higher step, belonging to a mussed-up looking boy with knuckles growing white from fingers gripping onto the railing and tie undone, hanging around his neck in an abandoned line. "Ya a'ight there, kid?"
Junhyeok was too stumped to answer.
The boy let go of his collar and straightened his creasing shirt. "Good thing I wuz'here, yeah? It's easier to take care of yourself with someone behind you, ya know?.. Ya wanna break yer head open or what??"
Junhyeok blinked, and then he sprinted down the few steps left and took both himself and his way-too-rapidly beating heart away from the gaping stranger who had saved him and set his mind a-scatter.
