"join the band club!" hyunjae yelled out, joowon cowering behind her slightly taller frame. "join the band club!!"
it was the time of year when their school had a club fair, where they could recruit new members for their band. they technically had to form a club in order to promote their band, so the two girls had to struggle with officer meetings and service learning projects along with writing their music and setting up gigs. they also had to be outside in the springtime. when flowers bloomed all around and when grass tickled the feet of cherubs frolicking in the fields. to say the least, it... sucked. jae was literally allergic to everything and everyone, so being outside in the middle of her symptom-causers sucked ass. and it sucked some major ass at that... but jae had to focus on more urgent matters at the moment, so she pushed the thought of their school rules' stupid butt out of her mind and went back to her yelling.
"join the band club!!! join the band—"
"hyunjae-unni-yah... i don't think anyone can hear you yelling. why don't you sing instead?"
jae looked at the girl behind her, softly smiling. "that's... not a bad idea. thank you, joowonie!" the blonde grabbed her guitar from their club table and gestured to joowon's conga drum. "how about you play something super loud so we can attract more attention?"
the girl with messy black bangs shyly nodded, a smile settling on her lips at the prospect of getting to play her beloved instrument instead of hiding behind her unni while masses of students pushed past their booth to go look at the kids at the chemistry club booth making ice cream out of dry ice. ugh... stupid chemistry club and their success... "mm~" she gave out a satisfied hum with her unusually low voice and a sparkle entered her eyes as she playfully tested her fingers in a roll over the drum's surface.
"great!" hyunjae strummed the strings of her weathered guitar a few times to make sure her baby was tuned. then her long, slender fingers danced over the vibrating strings in a simple melody joowonie quickly picked up on. the melodic harmony they were creating stood out among the commotion of the crowds passing by, and a few people actually stopped to listen and watch. jae began to sing, and a few people in the crowd cooed. some even whistled or gave out encouraging hollers. the blonde girl grinned and passed out numerous joyful blinks as she stretched the sounds exiting her throat, varying the highs and the lows, the softs and the slows, the exhales and the swallows...
and then a thing happened.
a passersby caught jae's eye and the tall girl choked on her extended high note. "fuck," she breathed out, catching those sharp eyes with hers and gulping to ease her suddenly dry throat. joowon's confused continuation of the drum melody filled in as a sort of solo, luckily distracting the crowd gathered around them. and as the silver-haired girl strutted closer, her features becoming brighter than day, clearer than the moon, closer than the earth below jae's feet: "daaaaaamn... you as hot as the sun, baby..." and the blonde's hand clasped over her mouth before she could fuck up even more.
"uh... thank you?" the silver haired girl now stood in front of jae, only a few centimeters shy of her in height. and jae was a tall girl... a tall girl, indeed.
"fuck... you know english?" the blonde croaked out, beyond embarrassed. her hands reached down to fumble with the base of her guitar, palms softly patting it repeatedly to calm her jumping heart.
"lived in canada for a while." the girl grinned and held out her hand for jae to shake. "i'm briana kang by the way. no, wait, i'm kang youngmi. not used to saying that in english, sorry." the girl gave out a raspy-ish chuckle that rubbed on jae's soul like sandpaper, making the blonde metaphorically clutch her heart like in those stupid fucking animés byronè liked to spam her with.
"park hyunjae," she managed to croak out. "but just jae."
"well, just jae... i would love to sign up for your band. got any available spaces?"
the blonde vehemently nodded and reached around to the table to grab the clipboard and pen. "here. just write your name, year, stage name, and instrument. or if you play more than one, you can write that too. please." the girl felt a tug on her long shirt and looked behind her to see a very distressed drummer struggling to hide her red face and ears behind her bangs from being in a solo exposure for so long. "ah... i have to go! duty calls, amirite?"
youngmi simply chuckled and slipped the materials out of jae's shaking fingers. "don't worry. i've been there before." then there was a small wink and jae's heart nearly exploded while the girl in the red cropped shirt waded through the crowd to the other side of the walkway, the side where trees bloomed and grass rooted. the side the highly-allergic girl was now bursting to go to despite her prior hate towards it. the blonde couldn't keep her eyes from straying to the entrancing figure sitting on the bench across from where she was performing with joowonie. while her fingers strummed and her lips looped to sustain her voice, hyunjae found her gaze drifting toward the girl hunched over the clipboard balanced over those crossed, curvy legs.
Dang, those thighs are something...
realizing her thoughts, the blonde shook her head and continued to sing.
joowon glanced at her unni from the corner of her eye and huffed from the lack of closure in their melodies. What's going on in unni's head? Did the flowers and the grass really bother her so much she became scatterbrained? Oh no... that's not good...
"can we take a break, unni?" she asked after a few more songs passed.
the crowd began to drift along while joowon paused her tapping fingers and patting hands and hyunjae screamed out, "yes! of course!"
before joowon could ask if hyunjae needed some water or medicine for her allergies, the blonde swung her guitar onto a foldable chair and zoomed towards the place the drummer had heard her complaining about the entire time they had been outside — the side with the 'shitty, useless bastards that stand there and spread their fucking flowers to torture' her. or something of the sort...
"hey... hey, briana!! you done yet?!~"
the silver-haired girl looked up to see a tall form flanked in blue jeans and a white button-up jumping towards her through the people in the flowing crowd, and her eyes crinkled in a smile. "yah! why did i even tell you my name is briana?!" her joking tone drifted over heads and around forms, and the blonde lost her train of thought from the stupid smile taking over her face.
and suddenly jae tripped over someone's shoe and ended up almost falling on top of a girl with a weirdly warm smile and auburn hair. "ah... sorry!"
"no, no, it's my bad! i was the one wading through a moving crowd..." hyunjae awkwardly smiled and scratched the back of her neck. "i'm so sorry about that!!"
the girl waved her off and instead brushed her army pants with a chuckle. "it's okay... really! it really is. but since i've already bumped into you... would you mind telling me where the band club is? i heard they're taking recruits. i'm new to this school, and joining a band sounds like fun."
jae beamed and grabbed the short-haired girl's canvas sleeve. "ah, come with me! you bumped into the right person it seems."
the girl beamed and followed the skittish jae through the crowd until they reached briana. "hey, briana! are you done with the clipboard yet?"
"sure am!" the silver-haired girl stood up from the bench and handed the board to a grinning jae before waving her bracelet-laden hand in a farewell. "thanks for letting me sign up, jae! i'm looking forward to playing with you."
and then she dissipated into the crowd, her tall form swallowed up by the bodies of students and staff members flowing like a river down the dirt path. "shit... she's so hot..."
"you really shouldn't swear, dear."
jae turned to the auburn-haired girl, finally taking her existence into account once more. her eyes had been trained to briana ever since they had approached the girl. but now the blonde's hands rose to her mouth and she nodded with wide eyes. "do you speak english, too?.."
the girl noted the pause and, with a chuckle, introduced herself. "i'm soojin. and no... but i understand enough to know certain things."
jae kept that in mind and nodded. then her mouth grew into an "oh" of realization and she held out her hand with a grin. "well, soojin, i'm hyunjae. if you want to join the band, just sign your name, year, stage name, and instrument. if you play more than one instrument, you can write down the one you prefer or you can write down all of them. that's okay, too." she handed soojin the clipboard and pen. "do you sing?"
"do i?!" soojin's laugh was at once proud and shy. "i've won a few singing contests, if that's what you mean, ahaha..."
"great!" hyunjae's eyes sparkled. "you can help me with vocals, then!"
soojin's cheeks bloomed with a blush, but she nevertheless nodded. "consider it done."
then jae bid her a goodbye and went back to play more songs with joowon. Shit! I didn't ask if Briana can sing! coursed through her head after a few minutes of strumming her guitar and belting out lyrics over the crowd of noisy teenagers. I'm a fucking idiot!!

Meanwhile, Soojin was busily scratching away at the clipboard. "Instrument?.. Acoustic guitar, cajon, maracas..."
"Mmn... Excuse me?"
The girl in army-style clothing looked up to see a girl with wild brown hair and a goofy grin smiling down at her. "Yes?"
"Is that the clipboard for Band Club?"
Soojin nodded and craftily tapped the pen on the metal holder of the board. "Are you here to sign up, too?" The brunette nodded and plopped down beside Soojin... close. Their legs touched, and the auburn-haired girl immediately felt uncomfortable. "Uh... Sorry..." She shifted away and went back to writing. "I just have to finish up real quick..."
"That's okay! I can wait a bit." The cheery voice elicited an annoyed tic to course through Soojin's brain and she gritted her teeth when the smaller girl scooted closer to her once more. dang... does she not know what personal space is??
Soojin shifted away once more, this time with a clearing of her throat. "Sorry, but I didn't catch your name," she squeezed through clenched teeth.
"Oh! I'm Kim Haewon! It's nice to meet you, Soojin-unni!~"
The brunette's sweet smile suddenly looked quite haunting. "How... how do you know my name?" Soojin asked with a squint of her eyes.
"Oh! I was just reading the clipboard over your shoulder to see who else is in the band. I'm sorry if I bothered you..." Haewon pouted and twiddled her pastel blue-painted thumbs in her lap as she leaned on Soojin.
The older girl sighed out and patted her dongsaeng's thigh. "It's fine. I just was a bit scared at first. I'm new here, so I thought I made a bad reputation or impression or something."
Haewon's lips curved up into a pretty smile. "Thank you, unni. You seem really nice."
Soojin let out a chuckle and went back to writing on the board. This time, she didn't move away from the girl who was leaning into her side because there was no more room on the bench.

once the club fair was over, jae looked at the board. "wonnie, look here! we have three new members!!"
joowon skipped over to the older girl and looked at the clipboard. a smile spread on her lips. "youngmi-unni, soojin-unni, and haewon-unni?"
"seems so," jae breathed out, her breath pleasantly catching in her throat. her eyes seemed drawn to one girl's name in particular. "i wonder if briana can sing..."
"who's briana, hyunjae-unni?"
jae turned around to hide her smile from the younger girl and began to put her guitar back in its case. "oh... that's just youngmi's english name."
"that's cool!"
"it's hot..." jae whispered out, and soon joowon was joining her in packing up the few materials they had with them.

I would just like to mention that when I went to write "singing contests" and my thumbs failed me, my phone autocorrected it to "sungjin contests," and I was like GOOD ON YOU PHONE YAAAS
