"you can hear me, right?" jae dipped his face toward his laptop screen, tilting his head to the side to better be able to look at the small camera perched at the top. he had bought it especially so he could skype brian and finally be able to see the boy.
"yeah," was the reply.
jae sighed out in relief, straightening his camera and getting himself situated so he could see the laptop screen. pushing his glasses up on his nose, the lanky high school student cleared his throat and asked, "can you see me?"
"yep," came a second breathy and static-ey reply.
jae kept looking at his laptop screen, only being able to see brian's skype icon so far. yu-gi-oh, huh? jae thought to himself, holding his head up with his elbow on the table. "you gonna be ready soon?"
"yeah. i'm almost done." a few thuds came from the other end of the call and jae sighed out onto his palm. he just wanted to be able to see brian, already... a particularly loud thud rang through the crappy speakers of his outdated laptop a few seconds later, causing jae to jump. "aha!" then the slightly pixelated image of an excited-looking brunette appeared on his screen and jae froze. the brunette smiled at him, fondly chuckling and shyly waving his hand. "hi, jae."
jae snapped out of his daze, closing his open mouth as a grin overtook his features. "brian..."
"you've definitely grown since our pen pal days." brian settled his chin onto the palm of his hand, mimicking jae's position.
the blonde softly smiled, his eye blinking a bit on its own as it usually did when he was nervous or excited. "you too," he muttered through his fingers, which were subconsciously resting on his upper lip.
"i don't remember you being blonde. when did you dye your hair?"
"oh. a couple weeks ago. does it look okay?"
"it looks great." brian's eyes crinkled as his grin grew. "you look handsome."
"thanks." jae admired younghyun's hamster cheeks, a soft smile playing at his lips. "when did you dye your hair? it was black before, right? like my natural hair..."
"yeah, it was. i've had mine dyed for about a month now."
"oh. well, you look handsome, too."
"why thank you," the brunette enthusiastically stated, giving jae another dazzling smile.
the two boys continued to stare at each other for a while until younghyun finally cleared his throat and spoke up."i've been thinking..."
"about what?"
"do you think sand is called sand because it's between the sea and the land?"
"holy crap, bro." jae buried his face in his hands. "why? why must you do this??" he breathed out in exasperation, letting his hands fall away from his eyes.
"because after that i started wondering if the 49th parallel north should be called the jaebri because it's between us."
jae shook his head, asking, "and how long did it take you to think of that?"
"all fucking night."
"dang." jae reached for a pack of crisps and rustled it open. after he popped a good amount of chips into his mouth, he spoke with his mouth full of food in hopes that brian would be disgusted. "i feel so offended. here i thought we were jaehyungparkian and then you go and pop this news on me."
"we are. that's why the 49th parallel north isn't called that. it's jaebri." the brunette acted offended, reaching for his own pack of crisps and stuffing as many chips as he could into his mouth so as to beat jae at this game. "i want jaehyungparkian to happen but i want jaebri to disappear," he managed to breathe out, struggling to keep the food in his mouth and not garble his words together.
"you're disgusting, brian. and that doesn't make sense," jae spoke whilst shoveling chips into his already-full mouth.
"you don't make sense."
"what was that?" jae rustled his bag, putting his other hand closer to his ear as if closely listening to the speakers. "i can't understand you!"
"fuck you." brian chuckled with his mouth still full of snacks which actually kind of hurt but he didn't give a damn. he was too happy about being able to finally see jae that not much could trigger him.
"fuck you, too," jae yelled, trying his best not to spit his food out onto the laptop as he began to laugh along with brian. his eye began to twitch and he rubbed at it with the back of his hand.
"you okay?" brian asked, worried. had jae gotten something in his eye?
"yeah. it just twitches sometimes."
"that's cute," jae swore he heard brian murmur before the brunette began to speak again, his mouth already almost free of food. "so... tell me about what's been going on with you in school. are you still doing that music project with bernard?"
jae and brian continued to talk about random things until jae noticed that it was past midnight. "hey, brian."
"everything alright, jae?"
the blonde nodded and coughed a bit. "i hate to cut this short but i have a presentation at school tomorrow and i have to go to sleep. i'll call you tomorrow after school, yeah?"
"sure." brian tried not to frown so as not to upset jae. why did time have to go by so quickly?!
jae sighed. "i just wish i could talk to you forever..."
"me too." brian sighed as well, doing his best to grin. "but you have a presentation tomorrow. that's important stuff right there. go get some sleep! we'll talk again tomorrow." his eyes twinkled as he thought about their future talk.
a soft smile curled itself onto jae's lips and he nodded excitedly. "good night, brian."
"good night, jae," the brunette murmured before the blonde sent him a small shy wave and the call ended.
