brian ran home from the school bus stop, his backpack thudding on his back as he huffed out heavy breaths into the colder air of late september. once he got inside his house, he sacked his backpack by the door along with his shoes and ran over to his family's only phone. it was the late 90s, and he just had to make due with using the landline, his parents not thinking that a brick-like cell phone was useful to them. his fingers quickly clicked the correct numbers onto the dial pad and excitedly placed the phone to his ear. after two rings, the phone was picked up on the other end. "jae, jae, guess what!!!"
"what is it?" the older boy's excited voice filled brian's ear and the brunette smiled.
"i sent sent a letter to my pen pal in korea, today!!"
"really?! wait, i have a pen pal in korea too!! don't tell me..."
"oh my gosh! that's so cool!!!" brian literally bounced on his toes, leaning on the counter with his elbows. "what's your pen pal's name?"
"kim wonpil. he goes to jyp boys' prep school. what about your pen pal?"
"his name is park sungjin and he also goes to that school."
"hold up. that's my guy's best friend! what the heck?!"
to say brian was surprised would be an understatement. "what?!"
"i really don't know..." jae seemed to be stumped on the other side of the call.
"so...what did you guys write about?"
"he told me about his classes and his roomie and his friend and i told him about school and..." jae's voice broke off like he was rethinking what he had been planning to say. "never mind. it's not important."
"but i want to know," brian said with a slight whine, lying down on the counter with his chest pressed against the granite and the arm that wasn't occupied by the phone reaching as far forward as would go. "you already started talking... just tell me!"
jae hesitated a moment longer, then whispered out, "i wrote about you."
younghyun smiled. "you know what?"
"hm?"
"i wrote about you, too."
"mhm." brian had never heard jae sound so shy. it made him smile. "thing is," the boy on the other end of the line continued, his voice louder than before as if he'd had a sudden spurt of confidence, "i want you to tell me what you wrote about me."
brian chuckled. "i will. but only if you close your eyes, bro."
"why?" the younger boy stayed silent, so jae decided to comply. "alright. they're closed."
"now tell me, what do you see?"
jaehyung hesitated, slightly confused. "nothing?"
"that's my life without you, jae. and that's what i wrote to sungjin."
