An Eventful Meeting
A cool breeze blew past as Brooklyn walked along the streets of Lower Manhattan. It was around lunch time, and sure enough, she had forgotten hers at home, meaning she had to make the trip back to the tenement. But hey, at least she could have a moment to herself. Since it was the season for baking, business had suddenly boomed the colder the weather became. Brooklyn barely had a minute to herself anymore with mixing batter, cutter cookies, and running back and forth between taking trays out of the oven and helping up front when it got too crowded that she was actually grateful she had forgotten her lunch pail at home the longer she thought about it. However, as Brooklyn turned the corner, something had caught her ear. And by the sound of it, the owner of the voice wasn't very happy.
"For the love of papes Mush for brains why couldn't ya have set this up at Jacobi's instead out in the freazin' cold like some lunatic?! Sides I's gettin' hungry. Oh an' it's yer turn ta pay.
"Yeah, yeah, stop yer gripin' she's standin' right there!" the sound of her brother's voice replied in a grumble.
Turning around, Brooklyn spotted him, along with Feister? Well, this certainly was a surprise, when he said he'd tell his girlfriend soon, Brooklyn did not think it would be the next day soon! On the bright side, at least it's finally out of the way, right? But of course, that's when her nerves started kicking in. What were the chances of Feister hating Brooklyn barely five seconds after meeting face to face for the first time?
Sadly for her, she didn't have much time to think about that because the next thing Brooklyn knew, they were now standing right in front of her. Red faced, somewhat how of breath, and holding hands. Mush was absolutely beaming with pure happiness despite the cold, while Feister looked as if she wanted nothing more than to get out of the unpleasant weather. The girl newsie in question was so much shorter than Brooklyn expected her to be. But that didn't mean she wasn't scared of her anymore.
"Brooklyn Meyers, this here is my goil, Feister. An' Feisty this is my sistah, Brooklyn." Mush seemed to have beamed brighter than before that this moment was finally happening. Two of the most important girls in his life were officially meeting for the first time.
"Ya share the same blood with this bum?" Feister asked, pointing her free thumb to Mush, who let out a little grumble.
"Umm...well, we're twins so I guess that's a yes."
"I's so sorry ya had ta deal with this bummer for as long as ya had."
"You've dealt with him longer than I have. If there's any sorrys being passed around, you should be the one to get it." Brooklyn had no idea where or even how that managed to come out of her mouth, but in the spur of the moment, it just felt right, oddly enough. She didn't know how to explain it to herself, it just happened.
"What is this? Pick on Mush day?" he asked, throwing his other arm in the air.
"It's always pick on Mush day," Feister replied with an eye roll before turning back to Brooklyn. The news girl looked her up and down once more before saying, "Yer alright mini Meyers." she then turned back to Mush again. "C'mon, it's cold an' I's hungry." with that being said she dropped his hand, spun on her heal and began walking in the other direction.
When Feister was far away enough, Mush sighed in relief. "That couldn't have gone any better!"
"That was good?" Brooklyn asked in shock.
"Course it was! She has 'er own nickname for ya. Trust me me that's a complement!"
"Alrighty then. If that's all then you should probably go catch up and get her food."
"You'se can come too if ya want," Mush said before she could head off. He stuffed his hands into his pockets and shifted his weight back and fourth. "Sides, all the fellas have bee dyin' ta meet ya."
"You sure?" Brooklyn asked.
"Why wouldn't I's be?"
She opened her mouth to say something, but at the very last second, Brooklyn decided to say something else instead. "Sure. What's the harm?"

"Hey fellas, I's got someone I's want ya ta-" before Mush could finish, half of the boys had ran up to where he was with Brooklyn, who had frozen at the sight of so many newsies coming up to them, and many more at their usual tables.
"How come ya don't got freckles like yer sistah?"
"Which one of ya is older?"
"'Er ears an' nose are smaller than yers."
"Forget the ears an' nose nonsense, she's the prettier twin if ya ask me."
"Hey no fair I's call dibs!" the newsie she recognized as Romeo said. "Mush had Feisty since day one, Jack ended up with Katherine, it's mine turn ta swoon the new goil off 'er feet."
"Ah shut it Rome," Race said as he ruffled the younger boy's hair. "We's already know that-"
"An' that's enough of that!" Mush yelled out before Race could finish his sentence. "My sistah is off limits ta all you'se bummers, got it?"
"Whatever ya say Mushy," Race smirked. He sent a quick wink to Brooklyn then quickly took his leave before any...shall we say...bodily harm came to him.
Following the rest of the boys to where they sat, Brooklyn was soon introduced to the rest of the boys. Some she's already met, other's she only knew by name, but the majority were all new to her. They were all friendly, waving a hand or making some gesture in her direction when their name was called. However, Mush was proudest when he introduced her to someone by the name of "Kid Blink" and explained how he was the one to have brought him to the newsies in the first place.
"Thanks for looking out for him."
"No thanks needed Miss Meyers. I's only lugged the bummer ta the Lodge, Feisty's the one who's been keepin' 'im outta trouble all these years," Blink replied with a smile.
"Hey! I's the one keepin' Feisty alive, not the other way around!" Mush defended.
"An' yer also the one who's supposed ta be gettin' me food," Feister pointed out. "I'll have the usual." she sweetly smiled.
"I's give up," Mush sighed, which made the news girl laugh.
After that, for the next few minutes, Mush and Brooklyn answered any questions about their past and such. Why he was the one to have run away while she stayed behind and other things like that. Some answers were quick and vague, others had a little more explanation, but the boys knew not to pry too much in case something ended up triggering one or both of the twins somehow. And, even a few of Brooklyn's own questions had been answered. Not aloud of course, she figured it out up in her head. One being, her brother was still the same person she's known just by observing how he acted around Feister, and the other one was that upon becoming a newsie, anything from the past was never spoken of. She heard Feister's loud remark of, "I's need yer whole backstory Mush seein' as you'se known my for years now!". Maybe the news girl wasn't so bad after all.
Anyways, this went on for a few minutes before her stomach started grumbling. So she went and got herself something to eat and eventually spotted a familiar redhead sitting on top of the table. Without giving it much thought she walked up to him, but quickly noticed the marking on his face. "How did you get a black eye?" she asked before he could even greet her. She settled herself next to him (yes, on top of the table) and took a closer look. She's had enough wounds herself to know that this had happened recently.
"A run in with Oscar Delancey," Albert replied quickly. Doing his best to sound as casual as he possibly could. Which wasn't exactly the truth. Albert did have a run in with someone, it was actually Mush, who didn't take it too well when he found out that he may have taken a small liking to Brooklyn, which as you can tell didn't end well. Feister had to step in and do damage control of course. And by damage control, I mean she took both boys by the ear, dragged them up to the bunk room, threw them down on a bed and yelled at Albert for not keeping his big mouth shut, and Mush for nearly killing Albert over something so stupid while the rest of the boys all freaked out over the fact that Brooklyn is Mush's sister as they cleaned his eye up.
That was a fun night. Not.
"Liar," Race coughed.
"What was that Racetrack?" Brooklyn asked as she looked over at the blonde boy.
"Nothin' doll face," he replied in a flirty tone as he winked at her once more for good measure. Seriously, what was with this boy and winking? He did it so much to the point Brooklyn started to believe it was some weird eye infection.
"Watch it," Mush said in a warning tone. "Or do I need ta remind you'se that my sister is off limits."
"Maybe ya do have a little Brooklyn boy blood in ya Mush for brains," Feister thought out loud.
"Of course Mush brains has Brooklyn blood, they's twins!" Jojo exclaimed.
"I's meant the city ya nitwit!" Feister yelled as the other boys laughed. Mush slung his arm around Feister with the proud boyfriend face.
Seeing the confusion in her eyes, Albert leaned down and whispered, "The newsies up in Brooklyn are known for bein' tough an' scary. So when Feisty said that yer brudda has a little Brooklyn boy blood, she means that he's got guts ta actually soak someone. We's don't call 'im "Mush" for nothin' ya know."
"That's a lot to take in," Brooklyn whispered back. Then she started to wonder why a few of the other boys didn't have nicknames, or maybe they did and she just didn't know yet. But chances of that were pretty low. She was soon pulled out of her thoughts when Jack shouted something out.
"Alright ya bummers listen up!" silence soon fell over the room and Jack said, "I's say we's make Brook an honorary newsie, and thus, she needs a nickname!" while some of the boys were busy shouting out random names, others were looking at her to find something that stuck out, and the rest were just thinking. All the while Brooklyn was blushing hard at all the attention. She didn't like the fact so many eyes were staring at her up and down. Sweet as it was that the newsies had all taken her in so quickly, it still felt odd. She was practically a stranger among them who came out of no where. Nevertheless, it was still a nice gesture.
"How bout Sweets!" Romeo shouted.
"How about no!" Mush and Brooklyn yelled at the same time.
"Blue bell!" Finch said. "Cause of 'er eyes!"
The boys continued to shout random names at the top of their lungs, and while they were all good names (minus Romeo's suggestion) none of them felt right. Maybe that's why some of the boys didn't have one, because finding a nickname was harder than it seemed.
"Freckles," Albert said without giving any thought whatsoever. "It's the first thing ya notice bout 'er," he added when everyone suddenly turned to him.
"That's the stupidest..." Race started before it sunk into his mind. "For once you'se actually has a good idea." everyone agreed that was a good name, but it really fell upon Brooklyn if it would stick or not.
As that was going on, her cheeks flushed a deep pink. Did - did he really just say that the first noticeable thing about her were the dots across her face in a good way? Brooklyn was never fond of them herself, in fact, she thought it was something nobody liked. It looked like she had a bit of dirt on her face twenty-four seven, and even more during the summer time. So to hear it was the first thing the redhead had well....noticed (liked was too strong of a word to use) it was shocking. But it was still nice to hear all the same.
"I actually really like it, Red." her cheeks became pinker than before as she spoke.
"So...Miss Freckles," Romeo began with a smug face, causing the other newsies to suddenly let out one loud, collective groan. "I's was wonderin' if ya had an extra heart. Because mine was just stolen by you'se." this caused the newsies to groan even louder, and there were a few head bangs along the way.
"Give it a rest Rome!" Race said. "Albo clearly already stole 'er heart."
"Sides that was just bout the worst pickup line ever," Albert added, completely ignoring the second half of the blonde boy's sentence.
"I's dunno bout that. It was much better than yer, if nothin' is forever line," Feister pipped up. Clearly still...shall we say, traumatized from that awful experience.
"So did Albert or some bummer already steal yer heart or..."
"Romeo!" the boys and Feister groaned.
"Don't worry, my heart is completely intact....." Brooklyn trailed off.
Once that was all over with, the newsies returned to joking with one another like always. However, Albert took notice of the way her voice sounded about the whole intact heart thing. Was it really intact, or was she just saying that to get everyone off her case about being in love and such. He couldn't exactly deny what he felt for her, especially after what had happened last night. But he was a bit unsure if it was just once of those five minute crushes or not. It certainly felt that way at first, yet, it was different all the same somehow.

Author's note
Alrighty then, Brooklyn finally met Feister and the chaotic newsies and we have reached the end of the whole Mystery Girl timeline thingy. So from here on out is 100% never before seen stuff. Random fun fact I just remembered while editing this, the name "Blue Bell" was almost going to be Brooklyn's nickname. I went back and fourth for the longest time, but by the end of it all, Freckles had been the better. I always sort of knew Brooklyn wouldn't exactly like her freckles, while it's something our favorite redhead does. Alrighty my friends, hope you enjoyed thanks for reading and I'll see you soon.
