three - dinner with the jacobs

"Uh.." David cleared his throat and snapped his gaze over to his parents. "Anyways, Jack, Lucy, these are my parents and my sister Sarah."

David pointed towards a girl, about a year older than Lucy, sitting in a chair. She was sewing a shawl what seemed to be a shawl up.

"Maybe David's partners would like to join us for dinner. Huh?" Mr Jacobs turned to his wife.
"Why don't you add a little more water to the soup." He kissed her on the cheek.

"Mayer." Mrs Jacobs chuckled and stalked off towards the kitchen.

**

The six were seated at the table, all enjoying the wonderful food. Excluding Les who was fast asleep in his parents' bed.

"So I gotta say, from what I saw today, your boys are a couple of born Newsies." Jack started as Lucy nodded, a big smile decorating her small face.
"Can I have a little more?" He then asked.

"Of course." Sarah blushed.

"Anyways, I'd say we could sell 1000 papes a week. At least."

"That many?!" Mr. Jacobs asked, astounded.

"More when the headlines are good." Lucy smiled politely.

"And what makes a good headline?" Sarah asked, sitting between Lucy and Jack.

"Well, keywords like 'maniac, corpse' and uh, lets see. 'Nude, lovenest.'"
Jack smirked into his answer as Sarah giggled and the eldest Jacobs gave eachother disapproving looks.

"I'm sorry about him. Seems he's talking too much." Lucy exclaimed through gritted teeth. Hoping desperately Jack would stop embarrassing her and himself.

He only cleared his throat awkwardly and nodded.

"Sarah," Mr. Jacobs started. "Go get the cake your mothers hiding in the cabinet." He smirked.

"That's for your birthday tomorrow." She scolded and hit him with a towel.

"Eh, I've had enough birthdays. Tonight's a night to celebrate." He cheered.

As David and Sarah got up to get the utensils and plates, Jack and Lucy sat in the wooden chairs, silently wishing they had it this easy.

**

Lucy sat next to Sarah while her parents were washing the dishes.

The two boys were it on the fire escape, talking about who knows what.

"So, you and David?" She smirked.

Lucy rolled her eyes with a chuckle.
"What do you mean?"

"Well, it's obvious my brother likes you." She nudged Lucy's shoulder with her own.

"Yeah okay.." Lucy's face flushed.
"But we only just met today."

"So?"

"So.." she started.

"Hey Luce! I'm heading out."

"Alright Jackie. I'll catch up with you. Bye Sarah." Lucy got up from her seat, heading towards the door, when a strong hand gripped her forearm.

"Wait, would you like to stay tonight? You can take my bed and I'll take the floor." Davey asked.

Lucy frowned. "I can't do that." She said sympathetically.

"No, it's fine. Honestly."

"Nah. Thanks for the offer. My brothers gonna be worryin." She smiled sympathetically.
"But I'll see youse tomorrow?"

"Carryin the banner." He confirmed with a smirk before Lucy crept out of the fire escape.

**

"They jacked up the price?!" Lucy yelled in anger. She had just woken up and was in a surprisingly good mood as well.

All the 'Hattan Newsies stood infront of the big headline chalkboard.

"Did you see that, Jack? 10 cents a hundred!!" Kidblink laughed in denial.  "Y'know. It's bad enough we gotta eat what we don't sell! Now they jacked up the price! Can ya believe that?!"

"This'll bust me, I'm barely making a livin right now." Skittery whined from the crowd of Newsies.

"I'll be back sleepin on the streets." Boots said throwing his hands up in defeat.

"It don't make no sense. I mean, all the money Pulitzer's makin, why would he gouge us?" Mush said to Crutchie and Lucy.

"He's a tightwad, that's why." Her brother commented.

Everyone agreed.

"Pipe down, it's just a gag!" Jack said approaching the paper stand.

He started talking to Weasel as Lucy stayed back with Mush, Crutchie, and her brother.

"You can ask Pulitzer!" Weasel smirked to Jack as he walked away.

"They can't do this to me, Jack." Blink said in sorrow.

"They can do whatever they want." Lucy frowned. "It's their stinkin paper."

Jack sat down next to Boots, who immediately started complaining as well.

"It ain't far." He huffed. "We got no rights at all."

"Come on, it's a rigged deck. They got all the marbles, okay?!" Race exclaimed.

"Jack, we got no choice. So let's get our lousy papes while they still got some, huh?" Mush sighed.

"No. Nobody's goin anywhere." Jack shouted. "They can't get away with this!"

"Clear out, clear out. Give him some room." Les said as he pushed people outta Jack's way. "Let him think."

Blink offered Jack a cigar as he started brainstorming.

Everyone was sent into an awkward silence as Jack thought.

"Jack, ya done thinkin yet?" Race asked.

"Hey hey hey!" Weasel called from inside the building. "World employees only on this side of the gate." He screeched.

"Put a lid on it!" Lucy screamed along with the other newsboys.

"Listen, one things fo sure, if we don't sell papes, then nobody sells papes. Nobody comes through those gates until the put the price back where it was."

"What do you mean, like a strike?" David asked.

"Yeah, like a strike."

Lucy scoffed. "Are ya outta ya mind?!"

"It's a good idea!" Jack defended.

"Jack, I was just joking. We can't strike, we don't have a union." David started whispering to Jack.

"Yeah but...if we go on strike, then we are a union, right?"

"No, we are just a bunch of angry kids with no money." Lucy said from behind David. "Maybe if we got every Newsie in New York, but..." She rolled her eyes.

"Yeah, well, we organize. Crutchie tske up a collection!"

"Swell, come on guys." Crutchie cheered and started walking away, Lucy stopped him with a hand on his shoulder.

"We get all the Newsies in New York togetha!"

"Jack, this isn't a joke!" Davey yelled as Jack and the boys walked away. Lucy stayed behind with Davey, giving him a small smile and shrug before running off with them.
