eight - newsies strike fund

"So let's have some ideas." Lucy suggested, adjusting her hat. Ever since Crutchie was taken to the refuge, Lucy had been forced to wear her hair up in her hat.
All the boys were afraid that she would be taken to the orphanage or something.

"Well, we have to show where we stand." David spoke up, moving closer to Lucy.

"Yeah, so we gotta stay in the papes." Jack said boredly.

"My paper's the only one printing any strike news so far." Denton spoke sadly. Lucy patted him on the back in a silent thanks.

"So we should do something that's so big, the other papers are gonna feel stupid if they try and ignore us." Lucy smirked. "Like some kind of public event."

Everybody mumbled in agreement.

"Like a rally, a Newsie rally." Jack started. "With all the kids from over New York." He paused.
"We make it the biggest, loudest, noisiest blowout this town's ever seen."

"Aye! That's not a bad idea Jackie!!" Lucy laughed at the greasy haired cowboy.

"We'll send- we'll send a message to the big boys." Davey exclaimed.

"I'll give em a message." Lucy chuckled.

"There's a lot of us. We ain't going away. We'll fight until damn doomsday. If it means we get a fair shake." Jack concluded, all the other newsies cheered.

"Hey guys, to our man Denton." Davey raised his glass. Lucy could tell that the boy looks at Denton as if he were his father, he put so much trust into the reporter. She found it heart warming.

"To our man Denton!" Everyone raised their root beers.

"Denton." The only girl had smiled the most she'd ever smiled in her life that day. Despite losing one of her best friends just that day before.

**

Lucy was seated next to her brother, Skittery, and Specs. They were playing poker, but Race was cleaning them out.

All the boys around Lucy stood as they heard footsteps approaching.

An older man in a top hat and fancy suit walked up to Mr. Kloppman's desk.

"Excuse-excuse me, can I help you?" Kloppman asked sweetly. He averted his eyes from the sign he was helping Dutchy with.

"Do you have a bit that calls himself Jack Kelly?" The man asked. Lucy recognized him as Snyder, Race had to physically hold her back, she was gonna hurt that man for what he did to Crutchie. "I wish to see him."

"Jack Kelly...Jack.. Never heard of him." Kloppman spoke softly as Lucy smirked at him.
"Any-any of you boys ever heard of Jack Kelly?"

"That's an unusual name for these parts." Specs spoke up.

"Oh you mean Jack Kelly." Race started. Lucy's eyes widened as she thought her brother was gonna rat jack out. It was no secret that he was wanted back in the refuge.
"Yeah, he was here. But he put an egg in his show and beat it."

Lucy let out the breath she was holding and laughed, patting race on the back.

"I have reason to believe that he is an escaped prisoner and possibly dangerous." Snyder remarked as Jack stood behind the man, mocking his every move.

"Oh, d-d-dangerous? Well, uh, I-I better look in my files." Kloppman led the rat behind his desk.

"And you do realize that if you have any female newsies, we have the right to put them in the orphanage." Snyder raised an eyebrow.

Lucy's eyes widened as Race track stepped in front of her. Her hand shot up to make sure her hat was still there.

"Rumor has it, you happen to have one. Mr. Wiesel remembers selling papers to her."

Kloppman gulped. "I don't know who you are talking about."

Snyder gave one more sweep of his eyes around the room and finally huffed, turning towards the door.

Jack winked at Lucy, letting her know that it was all alright.

"Give to the Newsies strike fund, mister?" Race asked, covering Lucy and Jack with the sign.

Lucy sighed in thankfulness. This was her home. And nobody was gonna take her away.
