Chapter Twelve ✧ Right Partner

AN: Jessica's outfit for when they are at the pub in London is up top.

You'll know when the song is needed, there's a surprise this chapter.

Jessica stood by Steve's side as the man pointed to a map that was laid out on the table, her hip touching his due to their closeness.

"The fifth one was here in Poland, right near the Baltic," Steve told, eyes focused as he marked the Hydra camps he had seen on the map in Austria, "And the sixth one was about here, thirty, forty miles west of the Maginot Line."

Steve straightened and wrapped his arm around Jessica's waist, holding her to his side while the man beside her grabbed the map and carried it off.

Jessica smiled at the younger man, "Thank you."

He only nodded and Jessica went back to Steve, who looked at Peggy from across the table, and said, "I just got a quick look."

"At least you got that, hero. I didn't even see it," Jessica shrugged. Peggy chuckled at that, raising a brow playfully, "Well, nobody's perfect."

Peggy smiled at them before walking off, Steve looking down at Jessica, who was now hanging off his arm.

He noticed her expression and said, "Jess? What's wrong?"

"I'm just glad we got back safely," Jessica met his blue eyes, lips tugged upwards, "I don't know what I would have done if I lost you, hero. I love you too much, I think I would've died with you."

Steve gave her a grim smile and picked her up slightly, the woman wrapping her arms around his neck while he whispered against the shell of her ear, "You don't have to worry about that. I'm not going anywhere."

"You better not," Jessica pulled back to cup his jaw, nose brushing against his, "It may be selfish, but I need you."

"Selfish would be the last thing I would ever call you, Brooklyn baby," Steve kissed the edge of her mouth, "I need you, too."

Jessica smiled as she ran her fingers through the hair on the nape of his neck, saying, "Good, because you're stuck with me."

Steve chuckled and set her down, her black heels clicking against the floor, "I don't think I mind that."

"Well, Mr. Rogers, I should hope not," Jessica smirked, her chest on his before she pulled his face down to hers, "You did ask me to be yours if I am correct."

"I did."

Jessica stood on her toes and pressed her lips against Steve's warm ones, eyes fluttering at the feeling of him. Steve smiled into her lips, pulling back only to kiss her nose and cheek before following to the crease of her brow and forehead.

The red head under him closed her eyes before she whispered, "We should probably get to our job."

"Unfortunately, because I could do that all day," Steve murmured against her hair, lightly swaying them. Jessica teasingly looked up to him, smirk evident, "Oh? Well, isn't that too much touching?"

"There's never enough with you."

Ten minutes later, Jessica and Steve found themselves walking with Peggy and Colonel Phillips toward the larger table, speaking about the map in the Hydra base.

"These are the weapon factories we know about," Steve explained, wetting his lips after a moment, "Sergeant Barnes said all the parts to another facility that isn't on this map."

Phillips nodded and said, "Agent Carter, coordinate with MI6. I want every Allied eyeball looking for that main Hydra base."

"What about us?" Peggy questioned, her eyes widening when Lorraine, Colonel Phillips' assistant walked over.

Jessica looked between the two, watching as the blonde woman glanced at Peggy briefly before going to her shoes. The red head tilted her head, but was shook out of her thoughts when Colonel Phillips spoke.

"We are going to set a fire under Johann Schmidt's ass."

Jessica then smirked, "Sounds perfect. I love playing with fire."

"I don't even want to know," Colonel Phillips shook his head, looking to Steve once more, "What do you say, Rogers? It's your map. You think you can wipe Hydra off it?"

"Yes, sir," Steve immediately responded, "I'll need a team."

Colonel Phillips nodded, saying, "We're already putting together the best men."

"With all due respect, sir, so have I... and my team includes a woman," Steve told him, causing Jessica to look up at the side of his face. She couldn't help the small smile that crossed her lips, saying, "Really?"

Steve glanced down to her, nodding before looking back to Phillips, "As long as that's okay, of course."

"Oh, what the hell. She can cause fires and tornadoes," He looked to Jessica, "Welcome to the Army, soldier."

He then turned as Jessica let out a long breath, saying, "Well, shit."

"Who knew you would be the first female soldier of the unit, Brooklyn baby," Steve squeezed her hip that was below his hand on her waist.

"I always knew my feminism was too strong for this century."

Bucky smirked at Jessica as she sipped on her glass of white wine, saying, "Wait. So he ran away when you kissed him?"

"Pretty much," Jessica sighed, "His little heart couldn't handle it."

"I'm surprised his asthma didn't kill him first," Bucky commented, taking a large drink of his whiskey. Jessica chuckled, "Can you believe he doesn't have that anymore? I still carry his inhaler on me just in case."

Bucky laughed, choking a bit before saying, "Do you really?"

Jessica simply reached into the small black purse that Peggy had lent her, pulling out Steve's inhaler and tossing it to Bucky.

"I wasn't kidding, Buck. It's still a genuine fear," She took another sip of her drink, setting it down on the bar in front of them. It was quiet between them before Bucky softened, grabbing her hand and placing the inhaler back in hand, "And you're happy, Brooklyn baby?"

Jessica couldn't help but smile lightly as she put it back in her bag, whispering, "Yeah. I really am, Buck. He is so sweet to me and I love him so much."

"Well, hot damn," Bucky whistled, leaning back slightly, "And I thought I was going to get you all to myself."

His best friend simply winked teasingly, "You snooze you lose, soldier."

Bucky and Jessica laughed in unison, the woman setting her head in her palm as her elbow was placed on the bar.

"All humor aside, Buck... I'm really glad you're safe. I had a bad feeling when you left in June," She bit her lip, "I hated it."

"You don't have to worry about me, doll," Bucky placed a hand on her shoulder, "I'm not going anywhere anytime soon."

The man then caught glimpse of Steve, who was walking toward them after recruiting Falsworth, Jones, Dernier, Morita and Dugan, making him chuckle.

"See? I told you. They're all idiots," He rolled his eyes, hand falling back to the bar as Steve kissed the top of Jessica's head, sitting beside her.

Jessica simply placed her hand on his knee as he said, "How about you? You ready to follow Captain America into the jaws of death?"

Bucky scoffed, "Hell, no. That little guy from Brooklyn who was too dumb not to run away from a fight. I'm following him."

"I like that guy, too," Jessica smiled before finishing her wine. Steve grinned at both of them, "He was alright."

Jessica shook her head, "He is as great as this man before me."

Steve only wrapped his arm around her shoulders, almost pulling her off her chair to kiss her temple. Jessica laughed before the elder barkeep walked over, looking to her.

"Another white wine, miss?" The grey-haired man smiled, his accent thick. Jessica gave him one in return, sliding her empty glass toward him, "Yes, please, sir. Thank you."

He only nodded, moving across the bar to fix her drink as Bucky asked Steve, "But you're keeping the outfit, right?"

The blond man thought for a moment, eyes glancing over Bucky's shoulder to see a poster of himself in costume, saying the tour was cancelled.

"You know what? It's kind of growing on me."

"Yes, well, maybe next time we can get one that is a little tighter on your ass," Jessica spoke, lips pursed a bit in thought, "I would like to see what is actually there."

Bucky immediately fell into laughter, face going red as Steve's did as well from embarrassment. The bar quieted and the trio turned to see Peggy walking in, a red dress flowing below her knees.

Jessica's brows raised involuntarily as she said, "Damn, Peggy. You look great."

"As do you," Peggy smirked as Jessica stood from her seat, walking over to her friend. Steve and Bucky did as well, Peggy turning to them, "Captain. Sergeant."

"Agent Carter," Steve smiled politely, wrapping his arm around Jessica's waist. Peggy ignored Bucky's wandering eyes as Jessica smacked his arm, saying, "Howard has some equipment for you to try. Tomorrow morning?"

Steve nodded, "Sounds good."

It was quiet for a moment before Peggy said, "I see your top squad is prepping for duty."

"You don't like music?" Bucky questioned. Peggy shook her head, "I do, actually. I might even, when this is all over, go dancing."

"Then what are we waiting for?" Bucky gave her a charming smile. Peggy only sighed, using her friends words from months ago, "The right partner. 0800, Captain."

Peggy then looked to Jessica, a smirk on her red lips, "Doctor Martin. Find me later. We have women things to discuss."

"Yes, ma'am," Jessica smirked as well, watching as she walked off behind them to the bar. Bucky sighed, "I don't know if that was directed toward Steve or another man, but I am invisible now. I'm turning into you. It's like a horrible dream."

Jessica rolled her eyes at his defeat, "Stop being such a sour-puss, Buck. We aren't in Brooklyn. You can't use your charm on every women."

"Don't take it so hard. Maybe she's got a friend," Steve teased. Bucky only looked to Jessica, "Yeah and it's Brooklyn baby."

"Speaking of," Steve looked down to Jessica, "Would you like to dance? I'll go pick us a song."

Jessica breathlessly chuckled, "You finally want to dance?"

"You'll have to lead," Steve smiled, outlining Jessica's jaw and chin with his index finger and thumb. Jessica wrinkled her nose at him, "I can arrange that. You go pick the song and I'll be with Peggy."

Steve nodded and kissed the crown of her head before walking off with Bucky. Jessica turned to find Peggy a few feet away, speaking with the owner of the bar.

Jessica went to her and sat down, the barkeep smiling as he slid her wine glass over, "I didn't want to leave it laying out for you in case someone touched it."

"Thank you..." Jessica trailed off, not knowing his name. The grey haired man smiled, "Arthur."

Jessica corrected herself with a warm grin, taking his frail hand in his, "Thank you, Arthur. I truly appreciate it."

"No problem, miss," He smiled, voice hoarse from old age.

Arthur walked across the bar to the other guests and Jessica turned to Peggy, seeing her gaze elsewhere. Jessica followed her eyes to see the blonde woman from earlier, Lorraine, sitting at a table alone with a glass of champagne between her fingers.

Jessica looked back to Peggy briefly, seeing the woman's brown eyes soft. The red head opened her mouth before closing it, contemplating her next words.

"Pegs?" She murmured, gaining Peggy's attention. Peggy shook off her dazed look, saying, "Yes? I'm sorry, I was in great thought."

Jessica looked around before she whispered, "Do you like her?"

"What? Don't be absurd, Jessica!" Peggy looked shocked, a red hue crawling up her neck. Jessica simply softened, grabbing her hand as she quietly said, "Pegs, it's okay if you do, I promise. I would never say anything, I promise."

Peggy's eyes glazed over and she sniffed, causing Jessica to wrap her arms around her.

"I'm so sorry, I should have never said anything."

Peggy shook her head against Jessica's neck, hugging back, "No, no. You're perfectly alright."

She pulled back, audibly gulping as she whispered so no one could hear them, "Promise that you won't tell a soul. I would be ruined and frowned upon by everyone.

"There is nothing wrong with loving someone, Peggy," Jessica spoke at the same tone, hands on Peggy's shoulders, "But I promise not to tell anyone. It can stay between you and I for as long as you like."

Peggy sniffed as Jessica wiped one of her stray tears, "I never thought anyone would be okay with how I am. That I was a monstrosity."

"You are not," Jessica sternly told, knowing the feeling of dread Peggy must be burdened with, "You are still the same woman that I love and call a friend. Nothing will change that. Especially something as silly as a choice of love. The only thing I am worried about is that you're happy."

Peggy was quiet for a moment before she whispered, "Thank you, Jessica. You truly are a great friend."

"Why don't you go talk to her?" Jessica suggested, causing Peggy's heart to sink to the bottom of her stomach, "She looks pretty lonely. Plus, you are a catch tonight."

"She could never like me," Peggy blushed, making Jessica chuckle. The woman smirked, "I don't know, Pegs. I caught the way she looked at you earlier. I think maybe you have a chance."

Peggy sighed, looking over Jessica's shoulder to see Lorraine's eyes already on her. Lorraine quickly looked away as she got caught and Jessica squeezed Peggy's shoulders, gaining her attention again.

"There is no harm in trying. And if she's indifferent, maybe you two can be friends."

"Thank you, Jessica," Peggy smiled, grabbing her glass of red wine. She stepped off the bar stool and whispered, "How do I look?"

Jessica smirked, "Like a peach. Now get your pretty ass over there before I get you for myself."

"Jess!" Peggy hissed through her teeth, blushing toward the ground. Jessica chuckled and said, "You look beautiful, Pegs. Now go on before she gets bored."

Peggy nodded and began to walk off, only to stop and turn toward Jessica once more.

"You look beautiful as well. Keep the dress. Green is most certainly your color."

Jessica smiled and watched as her friend walked away, turning as Peggy asked Lorraine if she could join her. She quietly sipped her wine in thought, happy that Peggy could now be herself with her.

Someone clearing their throat took Jessica from her thoughts, the woman turning to see Steve standing their with his hands behind his back.

His smile illuminated the room as he brought a hand out, saying, "Would you like to dance, Jessica Martin?"

"I most certainly would, Steve Rogers."

Jessica placed her hand in his and Steve led them to the dance floor that was surrounded by tables, everyone watching as the song turned into a slow melody. The woman couldn't help but quirk a brow as Steve wrapped one arm around her waist, grabbing her other hand and holding it.

She put her hand on his bicep, looking up at him as she said, "Everyone is staring."

"Because you look gorgeous tonight," He murmured, pressing his lips against her head. Jessica smiled and closed her eyes, saying, "You big flirt."

"I try my best."

The pair softly swayed to the music before Steve pulled back, a line creased in the middle of his forehead as his palm grew sweaty under Jessica's.

The woman noticed this and looked to him, concerned as she said, "Are you okay, hero? You seem upset."

"I'm not upset," He softly responded, the anxiety he was feeling drifting away with one look into Jessica's eyes. She smiled, saying, "Then what's the trouble getting to you, hero?"

Steve's heart was beating outside of his chest as he whispered, "Marry me."

"What?" Jessica immediately stopped swaying to the music, eyes wide at the man looking down at her.

Steve's stomach was in knots as he took his hand from her waist, gripping onto her other hand before he knelt to the ground on one knee. Jessica's chin quivered as tears gathered in her eyes, looking down at the man she loved unconditionally.

"Miss Martin," Steve started, tears glossing over his eyes as well as the music stopped, everyone quiet, "As the woman I have been in love with since we were children, it's safe to say that you have a place in my heart that no one else ever could have. My heart is so full of you that I can hardly call it my own. You taught me what unconditional love is and I know we have only been together for a short while, but this is forever."

Jessica let the tears fall as Steve pulled his hand from hers, reaching into his pocket to retrieve a ring box. Her cries grew louder as she looked Sarah Rogers wedding ring in the box, the unpolished Eliat stone causing her to blink away her tears.

Steve grabbed her hand once more, the ring in his hand between them, "Jessica Lynne Martin, would you do me the extraordinary honor of becoming my wife?"

"Yes," Jessica smiled through her tears, "Yes. Steve Rogers, I will most definitely become your wife."

Cheers and applause rang throughout the room as Steve smiled brightly, tears falling down his cheeks as he placed the ring on Jessica's shaking hand. He stood and Jessica immediately wrapped her arms around his neck, head against his chest as a joyful bliss electrified her body.

Steve held her close as his arms encased her to his body, her form fitting perfectly against him. Jessica could hear his heart rapidly beating, causing her to smile before pulling back.

She placed her hands on his jaw and softly kissed him, whispering against his lips, "I love you, Steve."

"I love you, Brooklyn baby," He murmured, taking her in, "I cannot wait to marry you."

"Marry me now."

Steve furrowed his brows, chuckling softly, "What? We can't do it now."

"Why not? London is full of churches," Jessica beamed, hands still on his face, "Steve, we can marry tonight and then when we get back home have a proper wedding. We can be married tonight."

"Tonight?" Steve whispered after a moment, taking in her words, "Would you want to?"

Jessica snickered, "Of course I do. That's why I brought it up, hero."

"Tonight," His voice was solid. Jessica couldn't help but let out a small shriek, kissing his face several times making him laugh, "I have to tell Peggy! You tell Bucky."

"Oh, you don't have to tell me," The said man took their attention from one another. He sat at the table closest to them, "I heard everything."

Jessica was ecstatic as she said, "Well then Peggy."

She kissed Steve lovingly, fingers in his hair causing him to hum against her. Jessica pulled back after a moment, wiping her red lipstick from his lips before smiling.

"I love you, Steven Grant Rogers."

"And I you, Jessica Lynne Martin."

AN: Okay, so I know it's pretty soon, but people in the 40's (and even before that) married fairly quickly. I think it's really cute that they did too. They knew what true love was.

So, if you're upset by how quick this is happening, I'm sorry.
