Chapter Three ✧ Recruitment
AN: Jessica's outfit is the same as it has been the previous two chapters.
✧
Thirty minutes later, Jessica was sitting in the waiting room of the Recruitment pavilion, hands gripping at the ends of her hair in anxiousness.
The woman was anxiety-ridden waiting for her best friend to come from the back of the examination rooms, biting her lip as she watched the door for Steve. A sudden movement from her peripheral vision and she turned, eyes wide as a doctor sat down beside her.
"You are with Steven Rogers, yes?" The middle-aged man questioned her, his German accent thick. Jessica narrowed her green eyes a bit, heart stopping in her chest as she thought Steve's discretion on his application had been discovered.
"In what sense of the word are we asking, sir?" She retaliated, tilting her head to the side. Doctor Erskine simply let out a small chuckle and said, "You came here with him, yeah?" Jessica nodded slowly, "As his bride or friend."
Jessica choked on her air and she shook her head, "Friend. I'm not like that at all with him. Why would you ask that?"
"Well, if you were, you could go back with him, but as it seems you aren't," He sighed, standing up and going to walk away. Jessica gulped and stood as well, saying, "Wait."
Dr. Erskine stopped and gave the woman a knowing smile as she said, "And if I said I was engaged with him?"
"Then you could come back," He simply replied. Jessica let out a long breath and gave him a curt nod, "I am to be married to him."
"Alrighty then."
Abraham Erskine waved her back and Jessica grasped onto her purse tightly as they made their way to the examination rooms, passing doctors and nurses who were giving them indrecious looks.
They quickly found where Steve was, a soldier escorting them to Jessica's best friend. Jessica narrowed her eyes at Steve's file that was in Erskine's hands and grasped onto his arm, whispering, "Steve isn't going to jail is he?"
When Erskine didn't answer, Jessica's eyes widened, her heart stopping making her say, "Please, no. Please, take me instead. Steve didn't do anything wrong."
"Relax, Ms..." He stopped, asking for a last name. Jessica sniffed, shaking her head a bit, "Martin. Jessica Martin."
He nodded, "Relax, Ms. Martin. You and your fiance are in no trouble at all."
Jessica let out a long breath and Dr. Erskine moved the curtain they were in front of, the woman sighing in relief when she saw Steve.
The man gave her a look of confusion, his heart dropping thinking that he was going to prison, "Brooklyn Baby? What's wrong?"
Jessica made her way over to him quickly, wrapping her arms around his neck. Steve instinctively wrapped his arms around her waist, blushing a bit at the interaction before Jessica pulled back, saying, "He says we aren't in trouble, but I think he knows about the forms."
They turned to Doctor Erskine, who smiled at them, shutting the curtain as he said, "So, you want to go overseas. Kill some Nazis."
He opened Steve's file and the said man furrowed his brow, "Excuse me?"
Erskine brought a hand out and shook Steve's hand, doing the same to Jessica while saying, "Dr. Abraham Erskine. I represent the Strategic Scientific Reserve."
"Steve Rogers," The blonde man introduced, "And this is Jessica Martin."
"Ah, yes, I know of your fiance-" Steve cut the doctor off, sputtering a bit, "Fiance?!"
Steve turned to Jessica, who only shrugged, and said, "It was the only way I could get back here, too. But are you okay? You're all red. Do you need your inhaler?"
"Ms. Martin is right," Dr. Erskine brought their attention back to him, "Better get her a ring so you can keep up the act."
Steve blushed at that and they watched as Erskine walked over to the examination table, reopening Steve's file making him say, "Where are you from?"
"Queens. Seventy-Third Street and Utopia Parkway," He explained. Jessica pushed Steve a bit, "That was rude, Steven."
"Well, before that, Germany. This troubles you?"
Steve and Jessica immediately shook their heads, speaking in unison, "No."
"Where are you from, Mr. Rogers? Hmm?" Erskine prodded, "Is it New Haven?" He flipped a page, "Or Paramus? Five exams in five different cities."
"I'm sorry, sir, but is that the right file?" Jessica lied smoothly- something she's always been able to do easily- tilting her head to the side. Dr. Erskine gave her a knowing look, "It's not the exams I'm interested in. It's the five tries. But, you didn't answer my question. Do you want to kill Nazis?"
Steve licked his lips, fingers anxiously playing with Jessica's that were at his sides, "Is this a test?"
"Yes."
Steve thought for a moment before Jessica laced their hands together fully, the blonde man turning to her. Jessica gave him a small smile, telling him to continue and Steve looked back to Erskine.
"I don't want to kill anyone," He admitted, "I don't like bullies. I don't care where they're from."
Erskine nodded, "Well, there are already so many big men fighting this war. Maybe what we need now is a little guy, huh?"
Jessica's green eyes widened as Erskine chuckled softly, "I can offer you a chance. Both of you. Only a chance."
He walked out of the room and Steve pulled Jessica forward with their entangled hands, saying, "I'll take it. Now what about Jess?"
"We will get to Miss Martin in a moment. Now, where is the little guy from? Actually?"
"Brooklyn. It's where Jess and I are from," Steve gave him a slight grin. Dr. Erskine nodded, "Ah, Brooklyn Baby is from that I presume."
Steve nodded and Jessica watched as Dr. Erskine stamped Steve's file, handing it over to him. Her heart dropped as the older man said, "Congratulations, soldier."
He then turned to Jessica, "You're a nurse, correct?" Jessica incoherently nodded, her stomach tightening, "Good. Then you will follow Steven to New Jersey where he will be training."
"I'm sorry, sir, but I have a job," Jessica looked confused. He nodded, "You do. Working as my right hand nurse. You will be able to be with your fiance and help with certain... procedures. This means you will be working in the field for inspection. I already have the person for you to be following."
Jessica gulped, realizing she was now a nurse in the United States army and whispered, "Okay."
"Congratulations to you both," Dr. Erskine smiled before he walked away, leaving the pair alone in the middle of a busy hallway.
It was quiet for a moment before Steve inhaled deeply, murmuring, "I got in."
"You got in," Jessica whispered back, not being able to control her heart beating rapidly, "I'm somehow in?"
"We're in," Steve softly said before he turned to Jessica, eyes bright, "I'm in!"
Jessica was shaken out of her shock as Steve wrapped his arms round her frame, holding her close. The red-head retaliated by placing her arms around his neck, fingers playing with the hair at the nape of his neck.
"Yeah, you're in."
✧
Two days later, Jessica was sitting in her small living room, a glass of lemonade in her hand as her other was holding her head in place against the arm of the small couch.
A sudden knock brought her out of her thoughts, Jessica padding over to the door with bare feet. She opened the door and had a look of shock when her twin sister was standing there.
"Lydia?" Jessica quirked a brow, surprised to see her, "Why are you here?"
"I happen to be your twin, Jessica," Lydia sighed, "And I'm kinda hurt you didn't tell me that you joined the army as a nurse."
Jessica shook her head, "How did you-" She cut herself off, "Stiles told you, huh?"
"You tell my own husband and not me?" Lydia sighed, "I'll admit that hurt."
Jessica let her twin inside, closing the door behind her before turning back around and walking to the kitchen, "Honestly I didn't think you cared that much, Lydia. Stiles has always been the one to ask me how I've been when you don't. I figured someone had to know."
"Because he had a thing for you in middle school," Lydia told nonchalant, observing the room, "Then you rejected him for Steve, who you're still not with."
"Okay, look," Jessica huffed, leaning on the counter as she placed her glass there, "If you're here to lecture me on your husband's eighth grade crush on me, I don't want to hear it. We were children. And it seems to be okay now that he's with you. Everyone had school crushes on everyone back then. Hell, Bucky even liked you."
Lydia finally met her sister's eyes and softened, saying, "I'm not here to fight with you. I know we've been through our ups and downs, but... you're leaving tomorrow for the war and you didn't even tell me."
"Lyd... you've never once tried to be my twin sister. You never wanted anything to do with me, even after years of trying on my part," Jessica sighed, "Why would I think this was different?"
"You know, we were close once," Lydia walked over to her, the twins close, "Before... everything."
Jessica gave her a knowing look, "You mean before dad walked out on us because of me?"
"That wasn't your fault," Lydia immediately told her with a shake of her head, "He was a jerk."
"Lydia... he walked out saying he didn't want to live with a monster who had magic," Jessica replayed that night, "Mom resented me so badly and we grew apart. I'm the reason our family split apart. Why do you think I moved out a soon as I could?"
Lydia reached toward Jessica's hand and softly took it, making her sister look up at her. It was only then when Jessica realized her sister hadn't touched her since they were children and she said, "You're touching me."
"And I'm about to give you a hug. So, get ready," Lydia chuckled before wrapping her arms around Jessica's neck. The eldest Martin twin froze for a moment before she gave in, melting into her sister's arms.
They held each other for a moment before Jessica sniffed, whispering, "This is new."
"I like it," Lydia smiled, pulling back a bit. Jessica nodded, "Yeah, me too."
"Do you want to spend the day together? I could help you pack a few things and hold on to your stuff."
Jessica looked out to the packed boxes she already had done, most of her belongings already put away ready for storage. She turned back to her sister and said, "Sure, that sounds great. I do have a request though."
"And what would that be?" Lydia smirked slightly, her expression being the same as Jessica's permanent one. Jessica chuckled and said, "Can I at least see my niece and nephew? I haven't seen them in a year."
"Of course you can."
Three hours later, Jessica was smiling as she watched her niece and nephew play around in the garden from Lydia's kitchen window.
She hadn't been around in such a long time, she half expected that Claudia and Noah wouldn't know who she was. Much to her dismay however, the twins ran up to her the moment they saw her step out of the car.
Whether or not they had first thought it was their mother, she didn't care to know, but nonetheless she felt welcomed.
A sudden voice brought her out of her thoughts, saying, "You know, you could maybe go out there and show them the cool things you can do."
"Stiles," Jessica chuckled, turning and leaning on the sink, "I don't think that would be a good idea."
He put his hands in surrender, his suit riding a bit on his arms, "I'm just saying it was pretty amazing as children."
They shared a laugh and Jessica hugged the man, "It's been a long time, Stilinski."
"It seems it has been, greenie," Stiles pulled back, placing his hands on her shoulders, "A year, correct?"
"The twins last birthday party," Jessica nodded. Stiles hummed, "Oh, yeah. That was a good cake, by the way."
Jessica chuckled and pushed him off her, saying, "Kiss ass."
"Oh and he knows it," Lydia voiced, walking into the kitchen, the sound of feet running in following her. Claudia and Noah immediately ran over to Jessica, the red-headed little girl pulling on her hand as she said, "Aunt Jess, is it true you have powers?"
Jessica's eyes widened and she looked to her twin, hissing lightly, "Lydia!"
"What?" Lydia shrugged, "They were asking about you and I said you had superpowers. It's not like they'll be passed down to them. Only your side gets it now."
Jessica sighed, knowing that Lydia was right.
The Martin magic worked differently than any other before, only passing down directly from the person who had it beforehand. Due to the fact that Jessica was the oldest, it passed to her, not Lydia.
Jessica's bloodline would be the one with the magic, meaning that if she were to have children, it would pass to her eldest daughter or granddaughter, since it only passed to the women of the family.
The eldest twin turned to Claudia and smiled, bending down to her height and said, "Would you like to see them?"
"Yes!" The kids giggled, smiles bright. Jessica wrinkled her nose as the phone rang, Stiles going to get it as she spoke to them, "Then let's go!"
Claudia and Noah's smaller hands grabbed onto Jessica's, avoiding her rings and longer nails and ran to the garden.
Once they were there, Jessica sat down on the grass with them, saying, "Now, did your mommy and daddy tell you what I can do?"
"Not really," Noah told, his wisp evident through his two front teeth missing. Jessica smiled at him and said, "Well, I have the same powers as your great-grandmother Lorraine, who was your mommy and I's dad's mom."
"Our paternal great-grandma?" Claudia asked with a innocent tilt of her head. Jessica reeled back a bit before she scrunched her nose, tickling the girl's neck, making her let out a giggle, "Aren't you smart, little duck?"
Claudia blushed and Jessica laughed along with her before she continued, "Yes. Your paternal great-grandma. She had the powers to manipulate any of the four elements: water, earth, fire and air. With that means I can do a lot of things. Earth can mean metals or crystals deep in the ground. Fire goes along with lightning in the sky during a thunderstorm. As long as it's a natural metal found on this Earth from the beginning of time, I can change it to how I'd like."
"So can you make flowers that are dead come back to life?" Claudia questioned, pouting a bit. Jessica nodded, "I can. But did mommy tell you that we both share a super power?"
The children gasped before her and Noah jumped into Jessica's lap, arms shaking her a bit, "Mommy has magic, too?!"
Jessica laughed as Claudia slowly climbed into her lap, saying, "Well, because we are so connected to the Earth, that means that we are connected to all its beings. It's a supernatural thing. The land spirits whisper to us when someone has passed away or close to passing away, their souls trying to find their purpose back into nature. We can feel them pass their energy back into the Earth. We're called banshees."
"Can I be a banshee?" Noah asked, brown eyes wide. Jessica gave him a smile, kissing the side of his head, "Unfortunately not, little duck. Only girls seem to be banshees."
Noah pouted and Jessica leaned in, whispering in his ear, "But I think you have a little magic in you though, Noah. Just don't tell anybody."
He smiled and nodded before Claudia cupped Jessica's cheeks, turning her attention to her as she said, "And am I a banshee, too?"
"Maybe," Jessica grinned, "Your mommy can help you find that out. You can connect to nature and it will speak to you."
Claudia jumped from her lap and ran into the house, yelling, "Mommy! I need to connect to nature!"
Noah and Jessica laughed together, the small boy leaning his head in his aunt's neck, whispering, "I like when you're here, auntie Jess."
"I do too, little duck. I do, too"
✧
Later that night as Jessica was helping Lydia prepare dinner for the group of four, a knock was heard at the door.
She furrowed her brow toward Lydia, asking, "Were you expecting anyone else?"
"Just one more person," Lydia waved her off, hearing Stiles answer the door along with laughter. Lydia smirked and wiped her hands on her apron, saying, "Why don't we go see who that is?"
She dragged Jessica with her and the red-head struggled against Lydia, questioning, "What is wrong with you- Steve!"
Jessica's eyes were wide as she stared back at Steve Rogers, who was in the door of the Stilinski household. She quickly smoothed her hair behind her ear and said, "How did you know I was here?"
"Well, I saw you leaving with Lydia at your apartment and connected the dots," Steve blushed, Jessica giving him a small, fond smile.
He knew they hadn't always gotten along and wanted to make sure she was okay.
She nodded and Steve cleared his throat, handing the bouquet of flowers he had gathered in the park for Lydia as an appreciation present and said, "These are for you, Lydia. I apologize that they aren't very nice, but it's a pleasure to see you again."
"Oh, come on, sugar," Lydia rolled her eyes, giving the man a brief hug, "We used to be great friends. You don't have to be so polite."
Steve nodded and Stiles clasped a hand on his shoulder, saying, "Well, the gals have been making an amazing dinner with help from yours truly."
"Stiles has always been a great help in the kitchen," Lydia smiled, winking at her husband. Jessica rose a brow, "And now I'm worried about what I may have touched in the kitchen."
Lydia smacked Jessica's arm as Stiles laughed, pointing to her, "See, I missed this girl, Lyd. She always did have an amazingly out of times sense of humor no one else had."
"I did try," Jessica smirked as the kids came running in from the garden, having been pretending to bring flowers back to life.
"Well, should we eat? It's all ready," Lydia smiled, nodding her head toward the dining room table. Everyone nodded in unison and she gave an excited expression, "Perfect!"
They all went to the dining room, everything already being set up and started eating. Jessica sat beside Steve on the left, who was at the head of the table, Stiles at the other. Lydia was by him on the left, Noah by her while Claudia was by Jessica.
Conversation flowed throughout the room, kids asking Steve and Jessica an abundance of questions until Claudia asked them, "Are you married to auntie Jess, Steve?"
Both Jessica and Steve choked on their wine, Jessica being the first to speak, "And what makes you think that, little duck?"
"The way Steve smiles at you when you're not looking," She answered as if it was obvious. Steve's cheeks turned as red as Jessica's hair when the woman looked to him before going to Claudia, "No, little duck. Steve and I aren't together. Just friends."
Both children pouted and Stiles said, "Enough, kids, don't make them run off or they won't come back."
Noah's eyes widened, "No! Steve has to help me make paper shoes!"
"I will, buddy, don't worry," Steve smiled at him, finally being able to speak.
Noah nodded and Jessica cleared her throat, speaking to Lydia, "Well, Lydia. I think you did a superb job on this chicken. A kiss for the cook."
She blew Lydia a kiss and the woman chuckled as Stile's grasped her hand, "Jess is right. Thank you, Lydia."
The kids followed, repeating his sentence and everyone laughed, Jessica turning to Steve, who was already looking at her.
They shared a look and Jessica smiled, moving her hand across the table and holding his in her own.
And dinner went back to normal, Jessica and Steve not speaking of their entwined hands as their hearts pounded against their ribcage.
