Chapter Thirty ✧ I Am Jessica Rogers

AN: Jessica is wearing the same outfit as the last chapter.

Jessica's eyes were wide as she heard the distinct sound of Bucky Barnes in her ear, having heard Steve and Sam talking to the man, who had come upon the helicarrier with them.

Whispers flooded her ears and Chess turned to her, noticing her fearful look.

"Jessica?" She questioned, tilting her head a bit, "Are you okay?"

"Something bad is going to happen," Jessica croaked out, voice hoarse.

Chess looked to Cali and Maria, who both simply shrugged, silently telling her that they agreed with her thought.

"You need to go," Chess told her, meeting her eyes. Jessica shook her head, "No. I can't. Steve doesn't want me to and-"

Cali cut her off, raising a brow, "You're Jessica fucking Rogers. I don't think you ever actually listened to anyone after reading your record. You can do this."

"She's right," Chess signed, "You're the only one that they will both listen to. You need to go."

Jessica licked her lips, eyes flickering in thought before she hardened, giving them a curt nod as she grabbed then gun from Cali's hand.

"We trust you," Chess' brown eyes burned into Jessica's green, "The world may not right now, but I can see your look. You want to save them."

"I do."

Cali smirked, "Then go, jaybird."

"Jaybird?" Jessica furrowed a brow. Cali chuckled, "Consider it a pet name. Jessica starts with J and you love nature. Tony will probably come up with more."

Jessica chuckled and began walking out of the door as Chess groaned, running a hand down her face, "Yeah, after he flirts with you."

The said woman began running down the stairs, whispers increasing as her legs pumped under her. Hydra agents stalked toward her and she simply flicked them away, hands and eyes glowing.

She rolled her eyes, "Steel-toed boots. They never fucking listen."

After a moment, Jessica made her way to the shores, hearing in her ear that Sam's suit had been ruined. She cursed to herself, hand fisted in her red hair as she looked up at the helicarriers in the air.

She looked to be in thought for a moment before she deadpanned, looking down at the water that was near the damp gravel.

Jessica shook her head, licking her lips as she whispered to herself, "If this doesn't work, I'm going to look like a freaking fat head."

She looked down at the water as her eyes flashed a light grey, lips curling as she blew onto the liquid under her foot. Jessica shivered a bit as the temperature dropped significantly, moving to step one foot onto the water.

"Well, I'll be damned," She chuckled, the water turning into ice under her foot as she took her first step.

Jessica looked up at the hellicarrier as her eyes flashed a bright blue, the woman running across the water that froze over with every step she took. She stopped when the whispering in her ears intensified, a buzzing noise now clouding her eardrums.

Her head tilted as she realized Bucky and Steve were in the helicarrier above her, Jessica's hands moving rapidly at her sides in quick circles. The water under the large slab of ice she was under moved, the Potomac River moving rapidly as Jessica continued to twist her wrists around one another.

Jessica let out a grunt as she threw her hands toward the ground, water under the ice surging upward carrying her through the air. Her legs shook as the force of the water sprout heaved her upwards, the loud waves crashing against the rocks as she did so.

She jumped to the helicarrier when she was only a mere few feet away, eyes going back to their normal emerald green when she gripped onto the back of the ship tightly. Jessica grunted as she pulled herself up, hearing a voice in her ear.

"Jessica, was that you?" Chess asked, chuckling a bit. Jessica panted, hair now dripping down her shoulders, "It was and now my pants are sticking to my thighs."

"Get them to stop and then you can take them off," Cali told, holding back a smirk.

Jessica wiped her eyes with her wet sleeve, "I'll keep you to that."

She quickly found the entrance and ran onto the bridge of the helicarrier at the sight of Steve and Bucky standing a few feet away from one another. Steve turned back to her when he heard her steps, eyes widening under the mask.

"Jessica, what are you doing here?"

The woman came to his side, eyes not leaving Bucky's as she whispered, "One of you is going to get hurt or worse if I didn't come. Trust me."

Steve didn't respond to that, knowing what she had meant. He only looked to Bucky, who was narrowing his eyes at Jessica in question.

"People are gonna die, Buck," He reverted his attention for a moment, "I can't let that happen."

Bucky continued to stare at him coldly, causing Jessica to raise a hand in the air, earning his attention once more.

She licked her lips as she decided to speak Russian, knowing the guards always did so after they wiped him, "Bucky, I need you to listen to me-"

"-You're a traitor," Bucky growled, "They told me that you left. That you were my partner."

Jessica shook her head, gesturing to the ship they were in, "Because, Bucky. They're going to kill millions of people; innocent children, women and men that don't deserve to die and lose one another. Families lost. The end of us as we know it. We have the power to stop him, something we should have done a long time ago."

"You left."

Jessica's heart clenched in her chest, "I came back for you. Just now."

She rose a hand in the hair, slowly taking a step toward him, "Take my hand and we can leave this together. Leave Hydra behind, get our memories back and never look back. We can make a life for ourselves like we had before, together. You just need to take my hand."

"I can't do that," Bucky hissed, causing Steve to grab onto Jessica's waist and pull her back. She sighed, "Bucky, please."

"Please, don't make me do this," Steve added, seeing Bucky's eyes darken at the sight of them before him.

Within a moment, Steve threw his shield at Bucky and they began battling each other. The old trio of best friends all growled as they fought in unison, Jessica punching the side of Bucky's face as Steve hit the opposite side of his ribs.

Steve pushed Jessica slightly as Bucky grabbed his gun from his thigh holster, bringing his shield up to protect their abdomens. Jessica's hands moved rapidly and the gun in hand turned green as it flew through the air, successfully landing on the window below.

Steve then thrusted his shield toward Bucky, the man flying across the bridge with a hard thud. Bucky panted as he stood, fingers now twisting a knife from his belt and slicing toward Steve.

The man stumbled back and yelled Jessica's name, causing her to turn to him as he threw something her way. She caught it between both hands, brows furrowing when she realized it was the chip needed to stop the targets from being fired.

"I got him, do it!"

Jessica swiftly moved past the pair who continued fighting, eyes moving rapidly as she pressed the button for the targeting blade to move down. She grabbed onto the bottom of the lever and hurried the speed, grabbing the chip in the middle and throwing it to the ground.

She crushed it under her foot, going to slip SHIElD's in when a loud scream echoed throughout the hellicarrier. Her eyes widened as Bucky and Steve fell from the first story, causing her to gasp as the brunette moved to stand.

Jessica quickly turned to place the chip in but fell forward as three gunshots echoed throughout the room, pain spreading up her abdomen to her shoulder. The woman dropped to the floor as she heard Steve yell her name, an immediate numbness spreading throughout her body.

Blood sputtered onto her chin as she coughed, going to stand before she let out a scream. She looked down at the sight of the bright red liquid running down her pantleg, the side of her thigh having been shot through.

Jessica let out a small whine as she pressed forward, grabbing onto a railing to pull herself up. The strain from the gunshot right above her armpit caused her to howl in pain, eyes flashing through their different variations at the anger that surged through her.

Whispers of Bucky's name echoed through her ears and her eyes widened, whispering to herself, "No, stop."

She hadn't even noticed when Steve jumped up onto the floor she was on until he was on the floor, having heard the gunshot from Bucky. He rolled over to her as Maria Hill's voice echoed throughout her ears.

"Thirty seconds, Cap."

Black spots began covering Jessica's vision as her breath labored, blood soaking through her green sweater she had worn so many years ago. Steve painfully pulled himself beside her and Jessica turned to him, dizziness washing over her through her adrenaline ridden heart.

She swallowed blood as she looked back to the chips, arm shaking as another gunshot echoed throughout the room. Tiredness and pain burned through her middle, fingers pricking with sharp needles as Steve fell back to the floor, having been shot in the abdomen as well.

Jessica's injured arm rose as her eyes flashed green, the woman causing Bucky's metal arm to fly back into the glass under them. Chess', Cali's and Maria's pleas reverberated through her earpiece, Jessica leaning onto the metal as she finally slid the chip back into the targeting blade.

A droopy smile danced across her lips as she slid back down the wall she was leaning on, head slamming against the metal as her body fell partially on Steve's. She wearily turned to him, eyes not being able to focus as she tiredly rose her injured arm toward him.

"Jessica, Cap, get out of there," Maria begged through their earpieces.

Jessica unknowingly shook her head, whispering, "Just fire."

"Do it," Steve panted, head lazily turning to her. The women's hearts sank, Chess almost letting out a cry, "But Steve-"

"-Do it, Chess," He almost yelled, tone still soft. He turned to Jessica, whose entire shirt was now crimson, "Till the end of the line, right?"

Jessica painfully chuckled, a loud high-pitch sound ringing through her ears, "Till the end of the line, hero."

She suddenly growled as she moved her legs, moving to stand, "But I'm not fucking dying today and neither are you."

Jessica closed her eyes in pain, jaw clenched as she fully stood, her left leg compensating for her injured one. She put out her dominate hand, leaning against the rail toward Steve.

"Come on."

Steve only grabbed onto her left hand and the pair let out a cry together, using one another to move as the helicarriers began shooting at one another. Jessica turned as another sound caught her ear, looking down as Bucky screamed.

"No," She croaked, "Bucky."

Jessica didn't have to look to Steve to know he was thinking the same thing, the pair grudgingly moving toward their former best friend as fast as they could.

After a moment, Jessica fell to Bucky's side, Steve doing the same as the man grunted in pain. Jessica waved his hands away, eyes flashing a green before her eyes closed to keep herself from passing out.

The metal barrier moved slightly and Jessica fell to the floor as Steve pulled Bucky out, the blond looking to her afterward. He crawled over to her, hands pressing against her thigh to stop the bleeding.

He only turned back to Bucky when the man stood over him, making him silently curse, "You know me."

"No, I don't!" Bucky kicked him, Steve sliding against the glass as Jessica stirred, eyes finally opening once again from the commotion.

She licked her dry lips as she rolled onto her stomach, a soft whimper leaving her when she pushed up on her arms. Jessica shakily stood, mind clouded with smoke and her spotty vision.

"Stop!" She mustered her strength, "We're better than this. We're family."

"You've known me your whole life," Steve tried, earning another punch. Jessica screamed his name, yelling, "Bucky, stop!"

Her thoughts were everywhere as she shuffled toward them, grabbing onto Bucky's metal hand as her eyes flashed green. He looked to her and she shook her head, silently telling him to stop.

"No more pain. No more."

Steve finally stood once more and dropped his shield through a piece of broken glass, "I'm not going to fight you. You're my friend."

"But you're my mission," Bucky yelled, not moving but looking toward the two. Jessica only slumped over to Steve, saying, "Then we'll be with you till the end of the line, Bucky."

Before anyone could say another word, a piece of the helicarrier above them fell, breaking the glass around Jessica and Steve. The pair fell into the river below as Bucky watched from above, having grabbed onto a scrap piece of metal in time.

Jessica fell unconscious before she hit the water, her body sinking to the bottom beside Steve's, the man being in a comatose state as well.

She only awoke when Bucky's flesh hand pumped her chest down, the man doing some sort of chest compressions on the woman he thought had drowned. Her eyes fluttered as he went to back away, causing her to cough up a mixture of water and blood.

A loud gasp of air left her as Jessica turned, seeing Steve while she spit out the remainder of the water in her lungs.

Jessica's chest heaved as she mustered, "No, stop. I know how to get our memories back. They reminded me of a way."

Her purple lips shook as Bucky looked back to her, both skepticism and intrigue in his blue eyes.

"You pulled us from the water, you care. You can't help it," Her arms moved tirelessly, the woman standing a bit, "You want to know."

Bucky only took one step backwards and she hoarsely yelled his name, continuing, "Please, stop. I can help. It's an old magic that is in my family and has only been used once, but I can try. You just need to give me your hand."

Jessica's eyes fluttered and she only found the strength to reopen them when she felt Bucky's cold hand in hers, causing her to say, "Bring me to the water. I need your help."

Bucky helped her over to the waters edge as the rest of the helicarriers fell to the Potomac, watching as Jessica's hand shakily placed her hands in the water. Bucky's eyes widened as her hands began to glow a bright blue, pulling them out and placing one on her thigh while the other went to her shoulder.

"My family calls this spirit water and was only done once by my great grandmother during the Civil War. Water is natural healer. Infused with magic... I can speed the process."

Bucky watched through the torn part of her trousers as her wound began to heal, skin cells seemingly multiplying and reconstructing. He met her eyes in awe as her body shook with ferocity, eyes glowing a new misty-silver blue.

"You need to believe that I can heal you," She told, "It only works if you believe. I need your spirited energy to combine with mine. No more pain, Bucky."

She didn't wait for an answer as she pressed forward, hands taking hold of the sides of his head. Bucky let out a scream as the water in hand glowed brighter, seeping into his skin and mending the barrier that Hydra had put up.

His veins were electrified the same silver blue as pain spread throughout his body, back arching as his head was thrown back. Jessica only pressed her hands against him harder, tiredness flooding her as her fingers pulled at his hair, energy leaving her body to transfer to his.

The man's veins stopped glowing after a moment and pair fell back in exhaustion causing Jessica to rest her head down on Steve's shin, watching as Bucky let out a small sob.

He finally met her eyes and his own widened, memories beginning to flood back to him, "Jessica?"

He blinked rapidly as memories of him falling from the freight car resurfaced, following by the horrendous pain Hydra had put him though.

"Go," She whimpered, body shivering as water ran down her back, "They'll find you. You need to run. Live a normal life. If you need me, you know where to find me."

Bucky's chin quivered as he looked down to his metal hand, blue eyes shaking as tears fell down his cheeks.

"But you. They'll find you, too."

Jessica couldn't help the tired smile that came onto her lips.

"They already know I'm not leaving. Even if something happens, I am Jessica Rogers. I can handle it after all."

Three days, Steve Rogers sat beside his wife's hospital bed, a warm washcloth in his hand as he rubbed down the side of her neck.

He softly tilted her head back and rubbed the cloth over where her old tracker had been, a dark purple painting her skin in a perfect circle. Steve ran his thumb over the mark faintly, palm cupping her cheek as he stared at her, eyes soft.

Jessica and Steve had been found by Chess, Cali and Sam, the trio finding the woman curled into her lover's side with her hand on his chest. Of course, everyone was confused by the angle her hand was until they lifted it, finding blood covering her Steve's suit.

Confusion further found the trio when they found out Steve didn't have any major wounds besides a few scratches, a split and brow, and a black eye.

Which meant Jessica had healed him.

Steve was pulled from his thoughts of Jessica healing him until the bed moved, the woman's eyes flashing open in a panicked state. Her breath was labored as the heart monitor began beating rapidly, her hands clutching the scratchy sheet.

Steve pressed his palm against her heart, thumb now running down her jaw as he shushed her, "Jess, it's okay. I'm here. I promise, baby, you're okay."

Jessica clutched at his hand on her chest, eyes meeting his as he leaned down and whispered to her calmly, "Please, Jess. You need to calm down or they'll sedate you again."

"Again?" She let out a small whimper, green eyes taking in his features, "How long have I been asleep?"

"You've been asleep for three days," He paused at her intake of breath, "But I promise you're okay. You're safe."

Jessica's chin quivered as tears gathered in her eyes, her hand shakily finding Steve's jaw as she whispered, "Steve."

"Jess?" He whispered, furrowing a brow slightly, "What's wrong?"

"You're back," She let out a sob, pushing forward through her pain and wrapping her arms around his neck, "Oh, my god. You're back."

Steve twisted his hands in her hair, Jessica shaking as she cried against his skin. The man held her close, eyes wide in thought.

He licked his lips as she kissed the side of his neck, saying, "Jess, do you remember?"

The woman pulled back, nose brushing against his as she spoke, "I do-"

"-How?" He cut her off, voice breaking as soon as he did so, "The last I remember is that we fell into the water. What happened?"

"Do you remember when you asked everything that my grandmother had taught me as a child?" Jessica questioned, fingers gripping at the hair on the nape of his neck.

Steve thought for a moment before his expression changed, the man deadpanning as he said, "Healing. How did I not remember that?"

"Because I never attempted it before," She sniffed, biting her lip as her head tilted, "Steve I healed Bucky. He pulled us out of the water and..."

She trailed off and Steve gave her a questioning look, "What?"

"I only woke up because he was pumping my chest. I must not have been breathing," Jessica explained, "But after I woke, I healed his memory."

Jessica smiled, "I brought his memories back and then did the same to me after I healed your bullet wounds. I couldn't have you bleed out on me."

Steve's chest constricted in his chest and Jessica moved a bit on the hospital bed, letting him sit beside her. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and she bit back a growl of pain as she leaned into his side.

After a moment, Jessica looked up toward him, whispering, "Steve? Did you ever get ahold of my grimoire? I told Peggy to give it to you..."

She trailed off as her eyes widened, "Wait, is Peggy dead? I need to know everything. All I know is what I could get out of them, like the dates when I was awake."

"Peggy is alive," He chuckled, "So is Lydia."

Jessica gaped, a smile gracing her lips as she let out a hopeful laugh, "Lydia? What about Stiles and the kids? Did Peggy and Lorraine ever get married? Did-"

"-Jessica," Steve laughed, hands clutching hers, "All in time. It's too much for you to know right this moment. When I woke from the ice I was a wreck without you. There have been things I've only found out recently and I think you need to be prepared for when you finally find out."

The woman sighed, eventually nodding after a moment.

"Steve?"

He smiled at her, thumb trailing down her lip which she grimaced at a bit, earning a confused look from him.

"What's the matter, Brooklyn baby?"

She gulped, morosely gulping as she lips quivered a bit, making Steve question her once more, "Jessica?"

"There are so many things I need to tell you," Jessica choked up, "So many important things like how I found out Bucky was alive..."

"Lydia said that you realized there wasn't a loss because I was gone and it was different," He nodded, a knowing smirk on his lips, "However I think you were wrong about my death."

Jessica let out a small cry, head low as she moved her hand to her stomach that was covered in a blue gown, "No, Steve, that's not it."

The man gave her a confused look and she whimpered, jaw clenching as she looked up to stop the tears from rolling down her cheeks.

She was the reason their child was gone.

"Steve, I-"

A cry let her lips as soon as she began to speak the words, Steve shaking his head as he ran his hand down her back soothingly.

"Jess, doll, why don't we take it one step at a time?" He murmured against her temple, "It's going to take time to heal from everything they did to you."

She sighed after a moment, "You deserve to know now."

"One step at a time," Steve repeated, kissing the crease between her brows causing to close her eyes in content, "Why don't we just stay like this for a while before everyone comes in questioning you."

Jessica looked up and met his eyes, hands cupping his jaw, "Please.... just hold me."

"Until my last breath, Jessica Rogers."
