Chapter Nine ✧ Abandonment Issues
AN: Jessica's outfit is up top.
Also, in case any of you are wondering, I did intensive research to find a timeline for this. Basically, Steve Rogers had the serum in the middle of June 1943 and now it is October 30th of the same year.
Also? Maybe trigger warning? You're going to see Jessica's crazy mom and flashback of her father leaving.
✧
Within five months, Steve Rogers had knocked Adolf Hitler down two-hundred times in his USO tour, all while Jessica clapped from either the wings of the stage or the front row of the audience.
They had visited Buffalo, New York and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, following to Philadelphia in Pennsylvania and Chicago, Illinois, finally ending up back to New York City all within the small time period.
Of course, Jessica had never left Steve's side as Captain America made his national debut in comic books, trading cards, radio series' and movies, all of which Jessica teased him for.
Steve Rogers and his partner Jessica, both off-and-on the camera were household names.
The woman hadn't wanted to be put onto the silver screen, but on her off time of not trying to replicate the Super Serum by Erskine, she found herself to be an actress for the United States Army.
The pair had been invited overseas to Italy to tour to soldiers on the front lines, along with the Star Spangled Singers, which currently led them to be making their down Chestnut Avenue in Brooklyn.
They had one last stop to make to say goodbye for a small time.
Their arms were hooked together, Jessica's hands placed on Steve's arm as they walked up to the familiar warm yellow color house, smiles on their faces. Children's laughter made Jessica walk faster, causing Steve to chuckle as she knocked on the front door three times.
After a moment, the front door opened to reveal Claudia and Noah Stilinski, making the children squeal loudly at the sight of their aunt and Steve. The twins attached themselves to Jessica's legs, the woman laughing at her niece and nephew as they exclaimed.
"Auntie Jess!" Claudia giggled, "What are you going here?"
"Well, little ducks," Jessica bent down to their height, "I promised that I would come back soon, didn't I? Plus I heard that there would be food."
Noah wrapped his arms around her neck, saying, "I missed you."
Jessica pouted, pulling both children into her, "I missed you guys, too. Way too much."
"You brought Steve..." Noah trailed off as he looked up to the now tall man who was in uniform, "I think. He grew really tall."
Steve chuckled and bent down, his right hand behind his back as he said, "I did. I hope you don't mind, Noah that I tagged along."
"Of course not!" His eyes widened as he stood eye height to the man, "Captain America is at my party! We have seen you and auntie Jess on the television fighting for us! You guys are heroes!"
"Hey! It's my party, too!" Claudia suddenly pouted, sticking her tongue out toward the boy.
Jessica chuckled, rolling her eyes playfully, "Now, I'm not a hero, Noah. Steve is though. And Claudia? Yes, it is your party, too. And we brought something for you both."
The twins gasped and began questioning them before a new voice was heard, causing Jessica's heart to sink to the pit of her stomach. She looked up to see her mother, Natalie Martin, staring back at her and Jessica instinctively reached for Steve's hand, feeling like she was going to get sick.
"Jessica?"
The said woman audibly gulped, breath slightly erratic before she licked her lips and whispered, "Mother."
Jessica shook out of her thoughts and turned to Steve, eyes wide as she said, "Steve, can you give the kids their presents?"
"Do you want to leave?" Steve asked her quietly so Natalie couldn't hear as she walked toward them, "You can go wait in the car and I will tell everyone why we are here."
Jessica shook her head before saying, "No. We're staying."
"Please stay, auntie Jess and uncle Steve!" Claudia whined, her red pigtails bouncing as she stomped her foot. Steve stammered and Jessica blushed, "Of course we will, little duck. Plus, Steve isn't your uncle, yet."
"Yet?" Natalie prodded, "You're twenty-four years old and aren't married, Jessica? What about children?"
Jessica clenched her jaw, teeth grinding together as she gripped Steve's hand tighter. She stood, pulling Steve up along with her, who gave Claudia and Noah the small wrapped boxes Jessica had gotten them.
The twins squealed and ran past Natalie, leaving her at the door with Steve and Jessica.
The red-head looked to her mother, putting her other hand on Steve's bicep and said, "Unfortunately not, mother. Excuse me for waiting for the right man to be with."
"Watch your tone, Jessica Lynne," Natalie snapped, causing Steve to push Jessica slightly behind him, "It's not ladylike."
"Pleasure to see you again, Mrs. Martin," Steve interrupted, changing the topic, putting his right hand out for Natalie to shake. Natalie furrowed her brow, saying, "I'm sorry, have we met before?"
Jessica's eyes flashed a bright green before she looked to the floor, not to show her mother her powers that Natalie grew to hate her for.
Steve simply said, "I was a little shorter back then, but yes. I don't blame you for forgetting."
"Where's my sister?" Jessica questioned quickly, only wanting to get the day over with.
As on cue, Lydia ran into the living room through the kitchen, eyes wide.
Everyone looked to her as she met Jessica's eyes, saying, "I'm sorry, I didn't hear the door. I was attending to the kids in the backyard with the other mothers."
"You're okay, Lyds," Steve shook his head while Stiles walked into the room.
He wrapped an arm around Lydia's waist and looked to Natalie, "Mrs. Martin, the twins wanted me to come in here and ask you if you could maybe cut a slice cake for them? They say you give the best slices and how could I say no to those faces?"
"Of course, Stiles," Natalie gave him a tight-lipped smile before meeting Jessica's eyes. She rose a brow, "We will speak later."
Natalie stalked off and Jessica looked to Lydia and Stiles, eyes wide as they stepped into the house. Steve shut the door behind them as Jessica finally took a deep breath, almost letting out a whimper.
"What the fuck?" She quietly said through her teeth, "You invited her?"
"I didn't know you or her were coming. She just showed up," Lydia denied, shaking her head as she looked like she was about to cry, "Jess, you know that if I knew she was coming I would have told you. Or if I knew you were coming I would make sure she wasn't here. I thought you were already off to Italy."
Steve shook his head, "We leave tomorrow."
"Jess, I am so sorry," Lydia came up to her sister, taking her empty hand, "Please know that. You don't have to stay."
Jessica contemplated her words for a bit before she let out a long breath, cursing herself silently, "Yeah, I do. I'm not letting her get the best of me."
"We can keep her away from you," Stiles added from a few feet away, "If you're with the kids she won't start anything."
"If she says one word about me, I swear I will lose my ever-loving shit," Jessica said sternly, "I'm not a child anymore. She will not talk to me the way she did before without consequence."
Everyone nodded and Jessica sighed, tugging Steve's hand to make him look down at her, "Will you please stay near me at all times? I can't do this alone."
Steve smiled and bent down, lightly pressing his lips to Jessica's, making her smile against him. Lydia and Stiles' jaws dropped at the sight, watching as Jessica ran her hand up Steve's jaw to wrap around his neck to pull him closer.
"When did this happen?!" Lydia shrieked, causing the pair to split apart wide-eyed.
Jessica simply shrugged before smiling, Steve doing the same as he wrapped an arm around her waist to pull her closer, "A few months ago."
"And you didn't tell me?" Her twin sister questioned, shocked. Stiles chuckled before shaking hands with Steve, saying, "My man. Steve, you got a good one. Greenie is a lot to handle."
Steve laughed along with him, kissing the side of Jessica's head before he said, "I got her."
"Wait!" Lydia brought back their attention, pointing between the couple, "Who kissed who first?"
"Do you want to know the version we tell everyone to boost Steve's ego or the truth?" Jessica casually glanced at her nails, making both Stiles and Lydia laugh aloud.
Steve's cheeks grew crimson and he shook his head, "Yes, she kissed me first and it was a shock."
Jessica scoffed, "I told you that I was going to try something and after I kissed you? You walked away from me."
Stiles winced in mock disappointment, "Never do that to a Martin woman, Stevie. It makes them pretty upset."
"From what I've gathered."
Hours later, the sun was down and the guests were gone beside Steve, Jessica and Natalie, who were in the sitting area with Lydia, Stiles and the twins.
Claudia and Noah were on the floor with Steve and Jessica, the couple sitting beside one another as they played with the children. Natalie was sitting beside Lydia on the small loveseat, Stiles across from them on the larger couch where Steve and Jessica had their backs pressed against.
Noah suddenly gasped and looked to Jessica from Steve's lap, his feet shaking in his newspaper shoes, "Auntie! We didn't open our present yet."
"Why don't you get it so you can open it here, kids?" Stiles suggested, Jessica wrinkling her nose at them in agreement.
Claudia and Noah giggled as they ran off, causing Natalie's attention to immediately go to her elder daughter.
"So," She started, making Jessica inwardly cringe at her voice, "Jessica, I've seen you on the television. Why is that?
"Mother, I told you. Jessica has joined the United States Army and is working for a classified unit," Lydia hissed silently.
Natalie scoffed, holding her cigarette in one hand as her glass of brandy was in the other, "If it's classified then why did she tell you about it? Or why is she on the television for that matter."
Lydia went to explain when Jessica stopped her, saying, "It's okay, Lyds. I can explain."
"I would also like an explanation as to how you, a woman, is a high class rank in the American Army when you clearly don't have the charisma or smarts for it," Natalie held her nose high behind her glass.
Steve could feel the heat radiating off Jessica's body as she held in her anger, using all her might to not flash her eyes at her mother.
Lydia went to say something when Jessica brushed her off and said, "You're okay, Lydia. You don't have to act like you get a voice in your own household," She looked to Natalie with pursed lips, "I, a working class, highly intelligent woman, have been working with a classified program. I took over for the doctor when he died, as I was his second-in-command."
Natalie simply humed, saying, "And you cannot disclose what this program is?"
"Classified means civilians, such as yourself, cannot know highly secretive information vital to the war," Jessica gave her a smirk, "So, no, mother. You cannot know. Not that I think you would understand anyways."
"My IQ is higher than yours, Jessica," Natalie scoffed, "Do not speak down to me."
Jessica simply tilted her head, not minding Steve whispering to her to stop, "Do you know what IQ stands for, mother?"
"That doesn't matter-" Jessica cut her off, chuckling, "It means intelligence quotient. I should know. My high school freshman English teacher had me tested and I scored a 195."
Stiles nodded, patting Jessica's head to try and defuse the tension, "Greenie is a genius. She's just not a dopey dish."
"Your teacher had you tested without my consent?" Natalie challenged, "I should have had him terminated."
"He was there for me more than you were," Jessica rolled her eyes, "Excuse someone for taking a chance on the pelicular dame who always had her nose pressed into a book."
Natalie scoffed, taking a long drag from her cigarette before pushing the smoke out through her nose. The tension in the room rose significantly as the fire in the fireplace flamed a bit higher, Lydia and Steve being the only ones noticing.
Steve turned Jessica's head toward him and kissed her nose, causing her now bright orange eyes to go back to their normal forest green. She let out a long sigh, licking her lips and going to apologize for her rudeness before Natalie spoke up once more.
"I don't know why he bothered, honestly. You're a lost cause, Jessica. Everyone knows it. Lydia and Stiles know it. I know it, most definitely. Even your daddy knew it. That why he abandoned us. You scared him."
Jessica was seething against Steve, the man having to pull her back from jumping up and attacking the woman. Tears were gathered in her eyes and Steve clenched his jaw, going to say something when Lydia stopped him.
"Get out of my house," Lydia stood up, eyes darkened in anger, "You will not come into my house and treat my twin sister like she is unworthy and terrible."
"She's a monster, Lydia. She has ungodly powers," Natalie shook her head, scoffing a bit before she drank the rest of her brandy.
Lydia narrowed her eyes and grabbed the cigarette from her mother's hand and through it in the fire, saying, "I said get the hell out of my house, mother. You are not allowed back here until you can actually say something nice about my sister, who was only born differently than us. I have powers too as you should recall?"
"Not like hers. She could positively destroy us all with the flick of her thin wrist."
Stiles got up from the couch and stood by his wife, Jessica now in Steve's lap with silent tears streaming down her face.
She knew what she was saying was truthful. It was her fault that their father had left them when they were sixteen.
Jessica couldn't even bare to live two years in that house with Natalie alone with Lydia because of her mother's hatefulness and judgemental tone. Lydia had never fought back for her, however, and Jessica couldn't help but feel bad about that also.
She suddenly stood up, wiping her eyes as everyone in the room looked to her, "No. It's okay. I'll go. Obviously I'm not wanted. Tell the kids that I love them."
"You're not capable of love, Jessica Lynne," Natalie shook her head, "You have to have a soul for that. Monsters don't have that."
Steve shot up and was between Jessica and Natalie, standing tall above the elder Martin woman as he said, "That is enough. I am done letting you walk over the love of my life. Jessica is the kindest, most thoughtful woman on this Earth. But you never let her show it because you think she's a monster. For God's sake you blame her for her father leaving you. You both are cruel people and Lydia doesn't want you here anymore. So, please, l'm going to have to ask you to leave."
Steve moved to the side and gestured toward the door, Natalie giving him a shocked look before glancing at Stiles and Lydia. Natalie scoffed when neither of them said anything, walking away and grabbing her handbag and coat off the coat rack by the door.
"I've never been so disrespected in my entire life!" She shrieked, as Steve wrapped an arm around Jessica, pulling her into his side, "You should walk away while you can, Mr. Rogers. All she is is a angry woman with killer powers."
"Go to hell," Jessica finally snarled, "Now get out before I make you."
Natalie only rolled her eyes and walked out, slamming the wooden door as she did so. There was an awkward silence in the room, tension melting away as Stiles chuckled.
"What's a party without some family drama, right?"
✧
The next morning, Steve and Jessica were sitting in two wide chairs across from one another in an airplane to Italy.
After Natalie left, the three adults, and Claudia and Noah despite not knowing what had happened, consoled Jessica. They convinced her that she wasn't a monster, but a gift from the Earth and mother nature herself to help keep her creation beautiful and safe.
Jessica had smiled at that and then proceeded to make the children open their presents, which were bracelets made of leather with a quarter sized Amethyst stone in the the middle.
"Amethyst is a can help you against negative energy. It's a very powerful stone, little ducks. Claudia, if you are a banshee like your mother and I, this will help center you because you will experience both a calm washing over when it's peaceful, but when it isn't someone's time... it can leave residual. It also offers divine love because I love you both so very much."
Jessica was brought out of her thoughts of the previous night by Steve speaking, saying, "Are you okay?"
The woman looked up from her novel, across to Steve, "I'm okay. I've just never been in a plane before."
"Me neither," Steve sighed, "I never thought I would be."
Jessica chuckled lightly, placing her green cloth bookmark back into her book, "I know. Everything that has happened is just..."
The woman drifted off and Steve gave her a light grin, finishing for her, "Surreal."
Jessica nodded and wrinkled her nose at her boyfriend, saying, "Yes. Surreal."
The pair smiled at one another for a moment before Jessica said, "Part of me feels guilty actually."
"For?" Steve raised a brow.
Jessica placed her head in her palm, elbow on the table in front of them, "One, I had to leave Lyds, Stiles and the kids. Second, everything that happened last night. Third, we are in first class while the girls aren't."
Steve nodded, "I find it strange that they are back there, yes. I guess the Senator wanted us in front?"
"I assume so. Whichever reason, it upsets me. I went to sit beside Elizabeth, but the stewardess escorted me back up here."
Steve chuckled and put his hand on the table, reaching for Jessica's. The woman entwined her fingers with Steve's and he kissed the top of her hand and knuckles before pulling back a bit.
"What happened last night is not your fault," He whispered, "Your mother is just an unhappy woman who uses you as an excuse for your father leaving because he was miserable with her."
"You didn't hear the vile tone he had when he called me a monster, Steve," Jessica shook her head, "He slapped me away off of him when I tried to get him not to leave."
"Don't touch me, demon! You have unholy powers and you will hurt everything you touch."
"Please, dad! I promise you that I will never hurt you!" Sixteen-year old Jessica grasped onto her father's hand, pulling him back from the doorway as Lydia and Natalie cried from the living room."
Allen pushed Jessica off of him, the small teenager falling to the floor with a loud thud. She looked to him in shock, fear in her eyes as he simply shook his head down at her.
"Don't touch me! I don't want anything to do with you Jessica Lynne. You're not my daughter. You're evil."
"Wait," Steve whispered, gulping, "He said that to you?"
Jessica simply nodded, her empty hand playing with two simple silver bands on her fingers that Lydia had given her before she left. Steve scoffed and shook his head, biting his lip in anger.
"That's ridiculous. You're anything but a monster. You literally help everyone you can," He rolled his eyes.
Jessica chuckled humorlessly, "Yes, well, reviving dead flowers and sparking fires for the people in the Hoovervilles to keep warm apparently isn't what helps me get on his good side then. It just led me with severe chronic anger and abandonment issues."
Steve smiled fondly before saying, "I forgot that you did that. See? How can someone with such a giving heart and soft soul be a monster?"
Jessica only flashed her blue to him, a playful smirk on her face as she twirled the water in her cup on the table.
"Well, Steve Rogers, the truth is? Every monster you'll ever meet was once a human being with a soul that was as soft and light as silk."
"Then it's a good thing that you weren't born human, Jessica Martin."
