Chapter Forty ✧ Fast, Weird, and Copycat

AN: Jessica's outfit is up top.

If you haven't read the important author's note at the beginning of this act, please do so. It has information you need.

Despite never knowing Loki or fighting in the battle of New York, Jessica felt a sense of urgency to find the Infinity stone inside of the Asgardian's scepter from three years ago.

A part of her hated the stone, in fact, it had been the source of a major anxiety leading up to the mission in Sokovia to infiltrate the Hydra base in the secluded snowy woods. Especially because she had been there before.

Despite the self-inflicting pit in her stomach, Jessica didn't let the past eat away at her as she jumped from tree to tree above Natasha and Clint, who were in a car below, shooting at all the agents from Hydra.

Jessica moved quickly from tree to tree as her hands began to glow a bright blue, fingers curling as she sent ice particles into the air. The snow suddenly hardened into ice and Jessica jumped over to it, sliding down beside the moving car with her friends in it.

She landed in a tumble, toes lifting her off the ground gracefully as she ran alongside the car, Natasha turning to her with a slight smile as Tony flew above them.

Thor's yell took Jessica from Natasha, the woman feeling the heat of another car on the back of her legs. She suddenly jumped into the air once more, the snow following and turning into a thigh block of ice.

The car behind her slammed on their breaks when she landed on the top of the ice wall, eyes and fingers blue as she manipulated the snow to quickly turn into water and then freeze around the breaks and wheels. It suddenly flipped and Jessica smirked to herself before turning swiftly and jumping to the ground with a tumble.

Her legs moved quickly under her as a roar of a motorcycle engine flooded her ears, knowing Steve was nearby. She ran after him when he turned a slight corner, watching as he dragged a Hydra agent through the snow.

Blasts went off nearby and Jessica's eyes turned almost an orange copper, hands looking as though they were flames as the fire shot through the air and into her hands. She began running once more, shooting the fire toward every agent in sight.

Of course she hated the thought of hurting anyone, but these were the men that had done her wrong. And, yes, she knew that perhaps it wasn't the greatest justification... but they had taken everything from her.

So, Jessica continued.

She briefly met Sylvi's blue eyes as the snow from between the trees turned into a large wave of water, wiping out dozens of agents from beside the Hulk. The women with water manipulating capabilities then moved along the others, Jessica jumping over the vehicle Nat was driving beside her husband, who was still driving his motorcycle, and the other Avengers including Cali.

The Hulk roared as Jessica suddenly ran alongside Steve, watching as Tony flew above them to the base in his suit, grunting when he hit a forcefield.

"Shit!"

The voice of her husband filled her ears through her earpiece from beside her, a small smile finding her lips as he reprimanded the billionaire, "Language!"

She jumped onto the motorcycle behind him, feet on the seat as her knees were bent slightly so she could hold onto Steve's shield.

Steve acknowledged her with a hum and then said, "Jarvis, what's the view from upstairs?"

"The central building is protected by some kind of energy shield," The AI told, voice in everyone's earpiece, "Strucker's technology is well beyond any other Hydra base we've taken."

Thor's voice came over everyone as he spoke with a grunt, still fighting, "Loki's scepter must be here. Strucker couldn't mount this defense without it. At long last."

""At long last" is lasting a little long, boys," Natasha rolled her eyes after taking seven agents down.

Jessica nodded, eyes ahead of her as she watched where Steve was taking them, "I have to agree. I really want to get this shit on the road."

"Yeah," Clint shook his head as several people shot at him, "I think we lost the element of surprise."

"You think?" Sylvi scoffed, arms moving as she sent a wave of water toward a four agents herself. Cali nodded from beside her, manipulating the fire around them, "I want this over with, I have to make dinner tonight."

Tony then spoke from above them, flying through the air, "Wait a second. No one else is going to deal with the fact that Cap just said "language" when I said something, but not Jessica?"

"I know," Steve sighed, Jessica continuing for him, "He likes me better, what can I say?"

Chess chuckled in their ears despite being back at the Avengers tower, fingers moving along the keyboard in front of her as she dismantled Hydra's codes.

"Everyone does, it shouldn't be a surprise."

"Marchessa!"

Another voice then said, "Dad, come on, everyone knows it. Redheads are always more spunky and fun."

Jessica smiled at Roxanne Stark's words, the woman fighting alongside Natasha, "Thank you, Rocky. I appreciate that."

Rocky had been called in by her father from New Orleans where she worked with her mother, having taken over the burlesque club when she turned twenty-one. Due to her work, she didn't visit very much, or show her powers.

Of course Tony Stark would have been the one to sleep with two different mutants and produce children with powers, it was only his luck after all.

"Guys, mission," Steve took everyone from the prior conversation, making Jessica pout from behind him.

He turned to Jessica, saying, "Remember Germany, '44?"

"Oh, god, again?" Jessica groaned, wrinkling her nose, "At least I have super serum this time."

She held onto Steve's shield as she felt the back of the bike be thrusted into the air by Steve controlling the handlebars, the married couple flipping through the air as her hand turned a bright green.

The bike was electrified by the same color, being thrown forward by both Jessica and Steve to hit the oncoming cargo truck in front of them. Jessica let go of Steve as her eyes then turned a bright grey, the air pushing against their bodies and letting them land softly on their feet.

Steve turned to Jessica and she winked at him, red tendrils of hair falling from her bun framing her face. He grabbed her hand quickly and kissed it, the pair staying together as they fought against the Hydra base.

Steve was suddenly thrusted into the air and Jessica gaped, hands curling as they turned light grey once more to help him land softly. A breeze then covered her and Jessica's eyes narrowed as something sped past her.

She turned the snow into ice around them and there was a deep groan of pain, her brow raising as she saw a man laying on the floor from slipping on her ice.

"We have an enhanced in the field," Steve told, watching as the man stood quickly and then disappeared within a blink of an eye.

"Clint's hit!" Natasha ran over to her friend, shots still being fired in their direction, "Somebody want to deal with that bunker?"

The Hulk then barreled through the building, destroying it making her continue, "Thank you."

Steve threw his shield at soldiers, Jessica throwing them into trees by the steel of their boots and metal suits.

"Stark, we really need to get inside."

"Well, blondie," Chess spoke, "You're in luck. I just disabled their shields."

Jessica smiled as her fingers curled in toward her palm, arm thrusting down to send the soldiers to the ground harshly, "You're amazing, Chess."

"I know."

Jessica then spoke to Natasha, "How bad is he? I'm on my way."

"He's losing a lot of blood. Stabilizing now."

Jessica nodded and gave Steve a slight smile before running in the opposite direction toward Natasha and Clint, sliding into the snow as she reached them.

She met Clint's eyes, her own flashing a bright mix of sliver and blue as her hands grasped at the snow below them.

"This is going to hurt like a bitch, but you have to believe I can heal you."

His answer was a groan and Nat's heart was racing while her voice almost broke, "Please."

Jessica's fingers curled as she lifted her hands into the air, the snow melting and flowing freely as though there were no gravity. Her arms shook as she pushed forward and pressed her hands against Clint's open wound.

His skin cells seemingly multiplied and reconstructed, a wail leaving Clint's mouth from the progression of healing Jessica was putting him through. He met her eyes in a pained awe as her body shook with ferocity, eyes glowing the same misty-silver blue that had only happened when she healed herself and Bucky.

The water in hand glowed brighter, seeping into his veins that were electrified the same silver blue as pain spread throughout his body, back arching as his head was thrown back. Jessica only pressed her hands against him harder, tiredness flooding her as her fingers pressed into his skin, energy leaving her body to transfer to his.

"You're hurting him," Nat cried, frantically. Jessica grew tired as she said, "I'm speeding the natural process of healing, it's going to hurt."

The man's veins stopped glowing after a moment and pair fell back in exhaustion causing Jessica to rest her head on a nearby tree. A small pant escaped her lips, exhaustion hitting her as Clint opened his eyes.

His fingers found his now healed wound, watching as a final blue light seemingly disappeared under his skin. Clint turned to see Jessica's now hooded eyes, body tingling from
fatigue of transferring her energy to him.

"Thank you," He whispered, watching as she lightly opened her eyes and nodded.

"Sure thing," A light smile graced her lips before she put a finger up in the air, "Now, I need sleep. Or Hot Cheetos. Something that will wake me up."

A new voice was heard, Jessica's eyes closing lightly as she recognized it to be Steve.

"Is she okay?"

Nat nodded despite the man not seeing her, "She's worn out. We should get them back to the ship."

"No," Jessica grunted, eyes opening as she slowly used a tree to stand, "I'm fine. We need to take this base down. Enough shit has gone on here."

"See, there it is again," Tony remarked, "No reprimanding for Poison Ivy?"

Steve only said, "What can I say, she's grown on me."

Jessica was quiet for a minute before she said, "Did he just make an ivy joke?"

"I think he did," Cali spoke, Rocky following, "That was smooth, grandpa."

Jessica chuckled through her nose before saying, "Meeting you boys up there. Give me a minute."

The redhead's eyes turned a misty grey as her wrists moved in circles by her sides, wind stirring through Natasha and Clint's hair before she was thrusted into the air. Clint watched from the ground as it seemingly looked as though she had air funnels moving against her feet.

He turned to Nat and said, "So, she can fly now?"

"She can do a lot of things you wouldn't think of."

Jessica was to the HYDRA base in moments, landing softly beside her husband, who only turned when he heard her feet hit the ground. He gave her a light smile and she gave him a reassuring nod, letting him know that she was okay.

Thor landed feet away and the pair made their way over to him, meeting his eyes as he asked, "The Enhanced?"

"He's a blur," Steve explained, "All the new player's we've faced, I've never seen this. In fact, I still haven't."

"Hero made a funny," Jessica humorlessly chuckled, "Humor as dry as the desert, but a joke, nonetheless."

Steve only glared at her and Jessica shrugged as Natasha's voice was filled through their ears.

"Clint's healed, but he's out. The blur smashed his bow against a tree."

Thor then said, "I can get Barton to the jet. The sooner we're gone the better."

He looked to Steve and Jess, "You two and Stark secure the scepter."

"Copy that."

A tank and dozens of HYDRA agents suddenly came up the hill the trio was on and Jessica sighed, a pout on her lips.

"They never stop, do they? All I want is go home and they keep on coming."

Steve sighed as well, "Well, they're excited."

Jessica watched as Steve put his shield out in front of them and Thor conjured lightning with his hammer. Her eyes turned a bright copper when Thor hit his hammer on Steve's shield, resulting in a force wave full of lightning to knock down all the soldiers.

The lightning didn't stop as it suddenly projected through the air and condensed into a large ball, moving rapidly toward the tank and destroying it. The men turned to Jessica as her eyes turned back to their normal green and she simply stared back at them.

"What? It annoyed me."

Thor chuckled roughly and said , "Find the scepter."

He then flew off, leaving the married couple before Tony's sarcastic words echoed throughout their ears.

"And for gosh sake, watch your language!"

Steve's head fell as he sighed in exasperation, Jessica concealing her laugh by biting her lip all while she stared at the side of his head.

"That's not going away anytime soon."

It was as if all the women of the group were waiting to respond as they all spoke in unison.

"Yes."

He looked to Jess and she winked at him as they stared walking, saying, "It's cute, hero. That forties charm is still present as ever."

"I seem to recall you liking that," He smiled through his mask as they walked up the steps of the base.

Jessica shrugged, swiping a stray hair that escaped from it's pulled back style, "Well, of course. Who wouldn't have a thing for Steve Rogers?"

Steve let out a laugh through his nose and they fell into a silence as they entered the stone base, eyes alert as they walked through.

"We're locked down out here," Cali told them and Steve pressed his finger to his earpiece, saying, "Sylvi, can you get to Banner? Time for a lullaby."

"You got it, stars and stripes."

Jessica and Steve made their way through the base and up a corridor, the redhead pausing before they turned a corner at the sight of the agent walking through the hall. She placed a fisted hand in the air and Steve nodded, the woman only smirking as she moved toward the man.

Steve watched as Jessica whistled, the agent turning and letting out an audible gasp when Jessica jumped and kicked him in the middle of the chest, successfully sending him through the air. The man flew through the open doors and Steve followed Jess as she caught sight of Baron Strucker, the man seemingly leaving before he was caught.

"Baron Strucker," Steve acknowledged, "Hydra's number one thug."

Strucker scoffed, "Technically, I'm a thug for SHIELD."

The men circled one another and Jessica simply observed as Steve's eyes narrowed, the man saying, "Well, then technically, you're unemployed. Where's Loki's scepter?"

"Don't worry," He sighed, "I know when I'm beat. You'll mention how I cooperated. I hope."

"I'll put it right under "illegal human experimentation"," Steve's tone grew darker, Jessica sighing at the men who simply were just talking instead of fighting, "How many are there?"

Jessica gasped as movement caught her eye, eyes immediately flashing green when she met the eyes of two brunette women, their own globes flashing a bright red. The women threw Steve down the stairs with a flick of the hand and Jessica threw her arm around, stones from the building flying toward the telepathic girls.

The taller unnamed woman with dark brown eyes blocked her hit and red surrounded Jessica as she was pushed into the wall, being held there until the girls disappeared behind two closed doors.

Steve ran up the stairs as Jessica fell to the ground, jaw clenched when he said, "We have two more enhanced. Female. Do not engage."

Jessica stood and looked to Strucker, the man saying, "You'll have to be faster than-"

Strucker was cut off by Jessica grunting and sending Steve's shield straight into his chest, the man flying back and crumbling to the ground as the shield came back to her. Jessica let out a growl as she went up and kicked the man in the stomach, holding the shield closely.

"Fucking asshole," She whispered, "You suck."

She walked back to her husband and handed him the shield, Steve softly giving her a grim smile. He pressed on his earpiece, speaking to the group.

"Guys, Jess got Strucker."

"How I wish I would have been able to see that."

Jessica chuckled, mood changing, "Of course you do, Cali. You need to find yourself a girl, sweetheart."

"Hey, I never said I wasn't trying."

"Yeah, I got something bigger," Tony voiced, Jessica furrowing her brow as she looked to Steve.

The Avengers quickly gathered back in the aircraft after Sylvi had calmed down Bruce and Tony got Loki's scepter, Jessica standing beside Clint, who was on a gurney.

She smiled at the healed flesh on Clint's side, saying, "Yeah, totally healed. The epidermis has completely grown back. It might be tender because it's new healed skin, but you'll be back to normal soon."

"Thank you, Jess," Clint grinned lightly as she pressed a fresh gauze pad with antibiotic medication on it, "I probably would have had a chunk taken out of me if it weren't for you."

Jessica wrinkled her nose while she chuckled softly, "With everyone's tech around here, we wouldn't let you die. Now, you're all healed, but just in case I'm putting this ointment on it. Change the bandage daily for a few days until the new skin is no longer light pink ."

Clint nodded and Jessica patted his shoulder, turning to Steve who had put a hand on the small of her back. She smiled at her husband and he led them away, the woman catching the eyes of Sylvi who had Bruce laying his head on her shoulder, headphones over his ears to calm himself down fully.

Steve and Jess sat side-by-side against the wall of the ship, their hands instinctively finding one another.

"You did good today, Jess," Steve whispered into her hair, kissing her temple.

Jess rolled her eyes playfully, "Well, thanks. I guess that means a lot coming from Captain America."

Steve copied her expression, humorlessly chuckling through his nose before saying, "I mean it. It reminded me of back then in 1943."

"A lot as changed since back then, hero. I'm not necessarily the same person as I was before."

"I'm not either, Brooklyn baby," Steve's look turned slightly grim, "We have both changed, better or for worse, I can't say. But we both are different people."

Jessica placed her chin on his shoulder, looking up into his blue eyes and whispering, "And you still like what I see?"

Steve hummed, eyes glancing down at her lips before lightly pressing his against hers in a soft, loving kiss.

"I do," He murmured, pulling back to meet her green eyes, "Relationships are about growth. I love the person you were and the person you are now. Nothing will change that."

Jessica smiled and leaned forward, kissing him lightly once more before resting her head on his shoulder and closing her eyes.

"You guys are gross," Cali gagged, Jessica's eyes snapping open to see Cali, who was now across from them.

"I swear, you have like fairy footsteps or something, sunshine," Jessica laughed, "When did you come sit over here?"

Cali smirked, "When you were having your cute moment."

"You're just jealous," Steve challenged, squeezing Jessica's hip. Cali deadpanned, signing, "Of course I am! Look at what you got."

Jessica winked as Steve rolled his eyes, "You would snake her out from under me?"

"I have Chess and Sylvi on board."

Sylvi's voice was heard from across the ship, "Hell yeah, baby!"

"Sylvi!"

"What, Bruce? She's hot."

A light blush ran across Jessica's face as she shook her head, saying, "You guys, please."

Rocky then walked past them, sitting beside Cali as she spoke, "They're right. Also? Have you seen your figure? Damn."

"You know, I don't know if I like knowing people look at your ass," Steve whispered to himself, making the women laugh.

Jessica shrugged, saying, "It's okay, we look at yours. You should do more squats."

Steve gaped and Cali snickered, the group turning when Sylvi called to her brother, "Hey, dumbass, report on the Hulk."

"The gates of Hel are filled with the screams of his victims," Thor placed his hands on his hips proudly, everyone deadpanning as Bruce placed his head in his palms.

Jessica's eyes widened as a shoe was thrown Thor's way, Sylvi throwing it as his head with a growl. Thor winced and began backtracking.

"Uh, but not the screams of the dead, of course. No, no," He stammered, "Wounded screams. Mainly whimpering, a great deal of complaining and tales of sprained deltoids and gout."

Cali shook her head, blinking in shock, "Jesus. He's the reasons all blondes look bad."

"Hey, Banner, Dr. Cho is on her way in from Seoul," Tony called from the pilot's seat, "Is it okay if she sets up in your lab?"

Bruce sighed as Sylvi squeezed his hand, saying, "Uh, yeah, she knows her way around."

Tony then began speaking to JARVIS and Jess stood, Steve furrowing his brow as she did so.

"Where are you going?"

Jessica shrugged, "I didn't get to see this scepter thing. I wanna know what all the fuss is about."

Steve nodded and followed, the pair meeting Tony and Thor who were already standing beside it.

"It feels good, yeah?" Tony asked, "I mean, you've been after this thing since SHIELD collapsed. Not that I haven't enjoyed our little raiding parties."

"No, but this... this brings it to a close."

Steve then said, "As soon as we find out what else this has been used for."

"Creation," Jessica suddenly spoke, not thinking making everyone turn to her.

She looked up wide-eyed, "What?"

"How do you know that, Poison Ivy?"

Jessica hummed and moved past Steve and Thor, lightly bringing her hand out and hovering it above the scepter.

She licked her lips and said, "It feels familiar. Like the first Hydra base we ever went to."

Jessica looked to Steve, saying, "Do you remember the guns that were powered by the Tesseract? This is another one. The foul energy and destruction is all over it... but it's as if it has a mind of it's own. It's not my magic or any of ours."

"You can tell?" Thor questioned, making Jessica turn to him to say, "Being a banshee means I can sense when we are in danger. Every living thing has vibrations and with time, you're able to read them. This one is redolent of creation."

Tony nodded, brows pushed together in thought, "Human enhancement. Since when is Strucker capable of that?"

The three men and Jessica all nodded and Tony said, "Banner and I will give it the once over before it goes back to Asgard. Is that cool with you?"

Thor nodded and Tony continued, "Just a few days till the farewell party. You're staying, right?"

"Yes, yes, of course. A victory should be honored with revels."

"Yeah, who doesn't love revels? Captain? Ivy?"

Jessica rolled her eyes, moving in front of Steve making him wrap his arms around her from behind and say, "Hopefully this puts an end to the Chitauri and Hydra. So, yes, revels."

"Plus, you know, we still live in the tower. So, there's that."

Soon after, the Avengers reached the tower, Clint being taken for observation as Maria Hill, who now worked for Tony Stark, walked into the ship.

"Lab's all set up, boss," She gave him a smile, clutching her clipboard.

Tony turned in his seat, pointing to Steve and saying, "Uh, actually, he's the boss. I just pay for everything and design everything to make everyone look cooler."

Jessica blew him a sarcastic kiss, "And a big thank you to that, Tony."

Tony clutched onto the air and pretended to catch her air kiss, stuffing it in his pocket as he said, "You know what, I'll keep that for when I'm alone."

"Come on, Tony," Steve rolled his eyes, making Tony say, "What? Did I say something?"

"When do you not say something?" A new voice was heard, Jessica turning and smiling at Chess as she walked into the ship.

Jessica made her way toward her and wrapped an arm around her waist, walking out of the ship with Steve and Maria behind them.

"What's the word on Strucker?" Steve asked, Maria immediately replying, "NATO's got him."

Steve nodded, "The three enhanced?"

Maria handed Steve the tablet with the information she and Chess had obtained.

"Wanda and Pietro Maximoff. Twins. Orphaned at ten when a shell collapsed their apartment building," Maria explained as images showed up of the twins along with another woman, "Went to live with Catalina González, the grandmother to the third enhanced, Andromeda González."

Chess nodded, "The González empire. Her father was the CEO of several major companies, including a housing development that was trying to help lower income Sokovian families with free rentals. He owned the building the Maximoff twins lived in... her family died in the bombing as well. We believe that's how the twins knew Andromeda beforehand."

"Sokovia's had a rough history. It's nowhere special but it's on the way to everywhere special."

"Obviously Pietro's abilities are different than theirs, did you guys find the exact potentiality of their powers?" Jessica questioned as they entered the Avengers tower.

"He's got increased metabolism and improved thermal homeostasis. Wanda's thing is neuroelectric interfacing, telekinesis, mental manipulation. Andromeda can replicate the power's of anyone she touches."

Jessica hummed as she and Chess stepped beside the elevator, Steve following as he looked to Maria funny.

"He's fast and they're weird."

"Well, they're going to show up again," Steve sighed as the elevator opened, the trio stepping into it.

Maria nodded, "Agreed. File says they volunteered for Strucker's experiments. It's nuts."

Steve chuckled to himself, Jessica raising a brow as a smirk crossed her lips.

The blond man then said, "What kind of monster would let a German scientist experiment on them to protect their country?

"We're not at war, Captain."

Jessica shook her head as Chess rested her head on her shoulder, Steve saying, "They are."

The doors closed and Jessica sighed, leaning into her friend.

"So, fast, weird and a copycat," She whispered, "So much fun."

"Oh, definitely."

AN: Just a reminder if you didn't read the author's note (which states all the face claim's), Wanda and Pietro Maximoff are going to be played by whoever you would like them to be. They don't have a designated face claim.
