Chapter 4: Reckless Speeding

My name is Brooklyn, and I'm the fastest gargoyle alive in the Manhattan Clan. For those who had missed it; I had been struck by lightning one night and woke up with the ability of running faster than the speed of light. My old clan leader Hudson is being held hostage by our greatest enemy, the Quarrymen which had always been nearly impossible to break into their lair. But now with my speed, Hudson will hopefully soon come home to us. I just have to learn at the moment when I reach my energy limits with my new speed...

....

Brooklyn was letting out cheers while he was one day running through New York, a red streak zipping along the streets usually unnoticed by anybody with the exception of Puck. The red gargoyle was at the moment on his own patrol from Goliath and running up to nearly 300 miles an hour, feeling more free than he ever did when being restricted by his gliding not allowing him to stay in the air for a long while.

At one point he had heard with his sharp gargoyle hearing a woman crying out for help, Brooklyn running over to where the screams were coming from which was in a large burning apartment. When stopping Brooklyn felt his heart thump painfully making him pant a little bit from his overworked speed energy, but got himself together after listening to a man yelling at a fireman that his wife was still in there. Eyes glowing, Brooklyn rushed inside, looking around in each room, the smoke slowly getting into his lungs making him cough.

"M-Ma'am, are you still in here?! Where are you?!" Brooklyn exclaimed, an arm over his eyes and trying to shield himself from the smoke until a voice sounded from what could be the living room along with some coughing happening, zipping right into the living room where he spotted the young woman clinging to a chair, hiding her face.

She looked up at the sight of her rescuer, and looked overly terrified thinking a demon was coming for her. Brooklyn knew this would happen but he held up his hands, trying to show her that he didn't mean any harm. "Easy, miss, I want to help you." Brooklyn said gently. Usually it would be the entire clan to help in fire problems but Brooklyn knew with his speed he could do this by himself.

Her eyes trailed over to Brooklyn who was holding out his hand, seeing a beam about to fall onto the woman. "C'mon, we gotta get out of here." Brooklyn encouraged, until finally he had the woman take his hand, and Brooklyn instantly zipped downstairs with his speed, and outside of the apartment right before it all collapsed, Brooklyn quickly running out of there after putting the woman next to her husband who began crying at seeing her safe.

Running far away from the wreckage, after a bit Brooklyn stopped, leaning against the wall as he felt again like his lungs were on fire, having not felt the lungs in this way since he first discovered his speed, wondering what was going on. Then he heard a beep in his ear radio, pressing the button. "Go...Goliath?" Brooklyn asked.

"Brooklyn, what have you been doing? We've seen the news about a rescue from a burning building. Had that been you doing it all by yourself?"

It made the red gargoyle swallow, replying back nervously. "Er... yeah. Was just practicing my new super speed in case we get to rescue Hudson."

"Don't let anybody see you Brooklyn. If someone learns about your super speed you can be in great danger." Goliath ordered, his voice making Brooklyn realize he had to come home, now. Brooklyn gave a little sigh before nodding reluctantly. "Alright, I'll be back soon Goliath."

Brooklyn afterward turned off the com and raced super fast back to the castle, not quite looking forward to the long lecture Goliath would give him about the whole 'with great power comes great responsibility' lecture. All he wanted to do was prove he could still be a leader of the clan even with super powers, stopping in front of a building and taking a few deep breaths from his excursion, climbing up a building nearby the castle, then gliding off as slow as he could so not to use up all his speed and upset Goliath.

Goliath was there waiting for him along with Elisa and the others, Lex watching with some jealousy for the fact that his red brother had been the one to earn that fancy super speed, Brooklyn grinning nervously, taking some careful steps. "Uh, hi. I know what I did was reckless but..." He tried to explain but his lavender leader cut him off.

"What you did with your speed was too foolhardy more than reckless Brooklyn. That smoke would have killed you. You don't have a mask to hide your face like in those superhero movies." Goliath stated in a condescending manner, making Brooklyn glare up at his leader defiantly.

"These are my powers, and I'm going to use them to eventually get Hudson away from those Quarrymen! My super speed makes me feel more alive than ever!" Brooklyn stormed, Elisa quickly coming in between them. "You should at least take it easy for a night Brooklyn. If you wear out all of your speed energy, what will happen to your body? It could collapse from exhaustion or worse." She said, trying to make Brooklyn see sense.

Brooklyn froze up from her words, hearing some logic to that, having recalled back to his moments of labored breathing more than usual after running. And eventually lowered his head, now feeling a little ashamed of his outburst but still didn't want to stop running. "Elisa, I rescue people better now with my super speed and... and... I just... want to get Hudson back." He said shakily, not wanting to imagine what Jon and his goons were doing to him.

Elisa gave Brooklyn a gentle smile, a hand on his arm. "We'll help you Brooklyn, as long as you remember that you're not a god, or invincible. You're still a gargoyle with limits."

Lexington then had some thoughts. "Hey bro, maybe there can be a way I can make something to help you not lose energy so quickly, and perhaps... even some kind of suit."

The red Second's eyes widened from that idea, and being able to wear a suit that fit his speed sounded rather cool. Broadway steps in as well. "I will help Lexington make the right kind of energy food for ya, promise." Brooklyn gave a little grin, liking now that his brothers were here to help him, Xanatos even offering to build Brooklyn's new suit as the sun eventually rose with the clan taking their positions, Brooklyn excited for what the next challenge with his powers would bring, and kept praying for Hudson's safety.

.....

Up next: Brooklyn gets a new suit and meets a new friend.
