Chapter #3

(Pete's POV)

I start to groggily wake back up. What woke me? It's still dark outside. Ever since we got out of the lab, Choco's been trying to figure things out the best he can. I don't know why he tries to give me a normal life; none of us are normal. Matt still hasn't snapped out of whatever he's in. I'm starting to think that he won't. Still sluggish from sleeping, I push myself up just enough to see what woke me. The one room building we share feels way more cozy than the lab.

What I see takes a moment to understand. Matt, I can tell from his glowing eye, is standing up. He's just staring at the wall. Matt doesn't really sleep, but he does power himself down to conserve energy. Or something like that. I don't really understand everything that he says. Matt doesn't even react when I get up out of bed.

"Matt?", I whisper. He doesn't move. What's going on? Matt's scary when he acts like a soldier, but this is worse. I step softly over to Choco's bed, hunkering down next to him. "Choco, wake up". I shake and poke him a few times before he's up.

"Pete? What's wrong ", Choco starts, but stops when he sees Matt. Choco springs into a crouch and stands up, moving in front of me. I don't think Matt would ever hurt us. Some part of him has to recognize us, but Choco's still unsure. I don't like it that we have to be afraid even after the lab.

"Hey, Matt. What are you doing?", Choco asks him, slowly moving to Matt's side. Nothing. Could he be sleeping with his eyes open? "Matt?", Choco says again. He reaches out to poke him, but Matt flinches away before he gets the chance. The cyborg looks up briefly at Choco before looking back at the wall. A shiver runs down his body, almost looking painful.

"What do you think is wrong with him?", I softly ask Choco.

"Matt would sometimes do this after a test at the lab, but we haven't been there for weeks", he answers. Quickly this time, Choco grabs onto Matt's arm. He shivers again but looks over at us. His one human eye is glassy and glazed over.

"Why is it always so dark?", Matt asks. His voice is flat, but he's hasn't said anything that like that for a long time. It's completely against his programming.

"Matt!? How are you feeling?", I come up next to Choco. He looks out the window again before turning back.

"Can you here me?", he says in the same tone. "Yeah, we're both here", Choco excitedly squeezes Matt's hand.

He shakes his head quickly, "No, who are you?". Matt spasms again, and his knees buckle this time. Choco yelps while trying to support all his weight. He quickly recovers and blink rapidly before focusing back in. "My system appears to have blacked out", Matt blandly says. He detaches himself from Choco and stands up straight.

"Are you ok?", I quietly ask him. Choco seems defeated that Matt reverted right back to his programming. We both just want to see him be happy for once.

Coordinates have been added to my system. Latitude and Longitude", Matt doesn't answer my question, looking back put the window.

"Coordinates? Come on, Matt. You can't follow those. What if there's a bunch of people waiting there to get you?", Choco immediately goes for the worst possible outcomes. I can't blame him. I never saw the worst of the lab like him and Matt did.

"The coordinates originate from my former Overseer's data base. I must comply", Matt ignores Choco and turns towards the door.

"No! You can't go! Just ignore it. That lab can't do anything to us now", I pull Matt's hand away from the door. He lets me do it, but doesn't step away.

"I must comply", Matt says again. This is strangely the most he's talked since we've been free. "I am being recalled to coordinates. In the east. I will go to them".

"Matt, that lab did nothing but use you. We're not going back. Ever". Choco is getting more agitated, and he actually tries to pull him away. The cyborg narrows his eyes and shoves Choco back. That's the first time he's been aggressive with one of us. It scares me, but Matt is still one of us. I quickly get between the two.

"At least wait until morning to do anything", I the to reason with the logical side of him. "It's dark out and dangerous at night. How far are you texting to go? It doesn't make sense to walk". Matt does seem to think about this. I can see it in his eyes when he's given in. The cyborg leaves the door and goes back to sit against the wall. He ignores Choco as if they hadn't just almost gotten into a fight.

I walk over next to Choco. We both watch Matt quietly for a while. Would he really have left if I hadn't of woken up? It still seems like he will in the morning. I only delayed it.

"What are we going to do?", I look up.

"I thought he was going to get better, but Matt is still following orders", Choco runs a hand through his hair. "We can't just let him wander off by himself, but I don't know if we can stop in either".

"Could we go with him?". The words are out of my mouth before I have time to think about them.

"No, Pete. You have school, and I have a job........ Well, I'll work on it. We have to figure out how to set up a normal life now that we're free".

"But....... we're not normal. Why should our lives be?", I argue, "Matt is getting better. We just have to stay by his side u til he snaps out of it. I'll follow him all the way across the continent if I have to!".

Choco is shocked at my determination. He's been doing his best to make sure that I have everything I need, but he forgets that I've been through everything he has. I'm not so naive. I just like looking on the brighter side of things. Choco deserves to be happy and Matt deserves to be free.

"All the way across the continent?", Choco smiles. "Alright then. Lets see where Matt's coordinations lead".
