Chapter #17
(Matt's POV)
I stare at the keypad, trying to decide how to proceed. I can't just break open this door like I did the last. The coordinates are drawing me forward, but I do not know what the password is for the keypad.
"So........ what now? How do we get in?", Pete looks at the keypad, clicking a few random numbers. He types in three of them before the keypad beeps, showing a red 'X' and resetting.
"We could just put in some random numbers and get lucky", Choco suggests, typing in another three numbers. He gets the password wrong, and it resets with another beep.
"Why would Matt get called all the way here, and then not be able to get in?", Pete frowns, fiddling with the keys. They both try a few more combinations. Each attempt is met with another small beep. Three digit code?
"Let me try", I say, moving between the two of them. Taking a guess, I type in a number. My protocols don't like guesses. 2...... 8....... 4. I type in my experiment number, even when my system says it's illogical. The door makes a loud clicking sound and slowly swings open on squeaky hinges.
"Awesome, you got it, Matt", Choco says, his voice a little louder then before. He pats me on the back and walks into the bruising with Pete following. That's strange. Productive things aren't suppose to happen when I don't follow protocol. Proud. You are proud.
I follow the others into the building, scanning the room. My coordinates are farther in. This first room is filled with filing cabinets, all of them labeled with a range of numbers. Two more hallways branch off from here. This place looks a lot smaller then the old lab. Choco ignores most of the filing cabinets, but he does open the one with the late 200's and early 300's.
"These should be interesting to read later", Chcoc says, pulling out a few files.
"They really kept all the information for us on another continent? Do they have backups? It's kind creepy", Pete shivers.
I have no need to read the files on stuff that I already know. I ignore the right hallway, but turn down the left. The door here I can easily push open. Choco and Pete both grab it to stop it from swinging shut, following me into the new room. The lights inside this building help, but my system gives me a little warning that my primary battery is low on energy. My second one is still not operational.
The new room is just a short hallway to the next room. It's a little darker, but I'm still able to see just fine. Display cabinets line the walls of the hall. The one nearest to me has a small bowl at eye level with a few white scales inside. The number '301' is beside it as a label.
"I think I'm gonna be sick.......", Choco gags, and I turn around to see the cause of his odd noise. There's a picture frame on the wall, but instead of a picture, a few orange feathers are pinned behind the glass. They're shaped like the primary feathers on an owl's wings.
"Are those your's? Is all this stuff from one of us? That's so gross", Pete looks around the room again with a new facial expression. Neither of them look at anything else as we cross the small hall. I look at a few more cabinets, but they are not my objective. The coordinates are in the next room. These doors also swing on their hinges, so I push my way inside with the other behind me. I walk into the center of the room and stop right on the spot where the coordinates line up. Objective complete.
The room is small, with a single bed across from the door. Everything is white, gray, and smelling of sanitizer. There's a counter along one wall with heaps of medical tools and supplies on top. I even identify a pink bottle of an alchemy sorcerer's potion. My attention turns back to the bed. Four different beeping machines are hooked up to the bed's occupant. His skin is pale, and I can barely see his face with the oxygen mask. Oh God, I look awful. My arm twitches a little, reacting to the foreign presence.
"It's weird how these lab people have such advanced technology, and yet they never share it with the world. I bet Matt could rebuild some of the stuff and put it to better use", Choco scans the room as well, and then his eyes find the body. "Oh....... Oh, no! That guy got incinerated! What the hell?".
"That's the aquatic experiment? He saved us, but how did he get all the way here?", Pete's eyes are big, and he inches a little closer.
I go closer as well. Nothing orders me to go near, but I do. My overseer called me here, that much is true. I still reach out my hand to touch the other experiment. My hand clamps around his arm. Almost immediately, my secondary battery jumps to life and dumps all its contents down my robotic arm. Sparks fly and jump from all the joints, and my entire body shakes a little. Choco and Pete both yell at me to ask what happening, but I don't have an answer. I pull my arm away when my battery is empty, stumbling a little.
"My system is function perfectly. There is no need for a restart", I tell Choco after he keeps questioning me.
"Good, we wouldn't want you too banged up for your next mission". The voice has all three of us spinning around to face the doors. A man stands there, and I immediately recognize him. He's the one who ordered me here and who ordered me at the festival back in GoldenEye. My Overseer is alive.
"Mission successful", I repeat, stepping back to the middle of the room. Pete and Choco both step back until they hit the wall.
"I'm glad to see that these months haven't ruined you", my overseer says, "Now, there are a couple holding cell down the other hall. I want you to place these two in there. Separately", he motions to Pete and Choco, "You have a lot more of them to 'round up after this".
I turn to face Choco and Pete, fully intending to follow my overseer's orders. They both look at me with wide, unbelieving eyes. Wait, unbelief? What is that? They both look so scared. What is scared? The twitches never come to combat my errors. I'm bombarded by so many new sensations all at once. It's hard to make sense of anything as I stand there, frozen to the spot. I...... I don't want this. Made, not born.
"Don't", the voice is weak from disuse, but I still look over to the bed. #300, no, Rob is sitting up in the bed, with his face mask off and pulling a needle out of his arm. He looks incredibly weak. "Fight, Matt. I know you don't want this", he says again echoing my thoughts.
"Oh, good, now you can take all three of them to the cells. Hurry up and get on with it", my overseer says. I look at him, and then back to them. I slowly turn around. The overseer jumps in surprise when I run at him. My first connects with his face, only hard enough to instantly knock him out cold. That felt good.
"Matt!", Pete shouts, running up and hugging me. I hug him back, amazed and almost crying that I know why I'm hugging him. This is my family.
"Took you long enough", Choco huffs, but I pull him into a hug anyways. As happy as I am to be myself, I still look back to Rob who's also smiling. One of his eyes is all foggy, but the other is clear.
"You saved me", I tell him, still almost in tears, "You freed us all, and then stuck around for me. Why would you do that?".
"Oh, I think you know why, now. Besides you repaid the favor". Rob holds his hands out in front of him, and he jumps a little when an electric current buzzes through the empty space. "I was a failed experiment, so my abilities didn't form properly. I couldn't make lighting before. That's what helped me stay alive in your battery. You saved me by bringing me back to my body!".
"But I'm.... I'm me again", I say, still in disbelief. There's no overseer or protocol telling me what to do and what not to do. I'm just me. Rob has no idea the gift he's given me. I can finally live a normal life. I'll take all the good, and all the bad. All us experiments may be a little Broken, but we can still be Restored.
A/N
So how was that? Did you like it? I literly wrote the last 15 chapters in less then two weeks, so it's a little rushed.
Wait! Don't leave yet! I have a little competition for you all! You guys get to choose what kind of epilogue you want. I have a few options planned, so you guys can vote and choose. None of them are very long, though.
All of them are 'true' endings, as in they all happen, but the where and the when changes. Some are more important to the overall world's timeline, and others are more wholesome. I might not have enough readers for this, but I thought it would be fun. Everyone gets one vote, and two endings will be published in an epilogue. The others will be deleted.
Vote away!
1. The Sorcerer Prince Ending
2. The Obsidian Ending
3. The Domestic Ending
4. File #3 Ending
