Chapter #11
(Matt's POV)
I stand in the ship's cabin, wet and dripping onto the floor. Choco and Pete are standing to either side of me. The storm has passed along with the wind and rain. Rain is not convenient on such a short ship ride. There was no need for more freshwater. It has only delayed my arrival at the coordinates.
"Can y-you say that one more time?", Captain Zephra stands across her desk from us, tense and ready to leap into action. Her hostile stance is starting to trigger my defense protocols. Hostile is a threat to harm or attack. Nelaxin stands next to her with his arms crossed. Two hostiles. I was made to defeat any threat, even other lab experiments with different abilities. I can dispatch the two Zemrlt in minutes if they become a threat.
Choco sighs, his muscles also tense. He's also soaked with water, his feathers limp and flat against his body. "The three of us are experiments from a lab. There are machines and systems there powered by electricity, you could also call it lighting, and it's a lot more advanced then anything you'll find outside of it", Choco explains out story once again, "The leaders of the lab wanted to create soldiers to take over GoldenEye. They failed, and now experiments like us three have nowhere to go".
"Experiments. Y-You look like a wi-wingless Caelum, and the little one a human, but your big fr-friend makes me believe it", Zephra keeps looking back to me. "Wh-What is he?".
"Test type: mechanical", I start to drone out my own file information. "Teat number: #284. Birth species: human-".
"Alright, Matt", Choco interrupts me, "I think she gets the point".
"You thought I was human? You know my skin is green, right?", Pete cocks his head to the side and squints his eyes.
"I've be-been told that humans can turn green wh-when on the water", Zephra shrugs. Green. Seasick. Humans get seasick and can take on a green hue. My computer provides me with the missing information. Nelaxin signs a few words to his wife in rapid fire. She signs back as Pete struggles to follow at the rapid pace.
"Y-You lied to me, and did no-not tell the truth". Zephra's eyes are cold. "My crew is scared of you. My husband w-wants to toss the metal one it the sea, but h-he saved one of my men. You three will be confined at the bow of the ship until we arrive". Afraid of me?
"I'm sorry, Captain, for not telling you the truth. We just really needed to get across the ocean", Choco looks at his feet and grabs my arm to pull me out with him. Pete doesn't say a word, wearing another expression that doesn't make sense to me. Afraid of me.
Choco pulls me back outside onto the ship's deck. The crew is back to work, but watch the three of us. My defense protocol expires when they take no further action. There is no threat anymore. The bow of the ship is a cramped space where the guard rails meet. Choco sits down on the damp boards, pulling his knees to his chest.
"At least we didn't get thrown off the boat", Pete says, sitting down next to him.
"Yeah, but I didn't exactly plan on the entire crew getting freaked out by Matt. They're afraid of his strength and metal body", Choco runs a hand through his hair. Afraid of me......
"Are you......", It's hard to find my voice as my body starts to twitch, "Are you two afraid of me?". I don't know where the question came from, but it's suddenly all I can think about. Something tightens in my chest. What is this? I don't understand. Am I...... afraid?
"Matt!?", Pete and Choco both say my name at the same time.
"Can you hear me?". The phantom voice is just a whisper inside my head, even as every system in my computer is fighting against it. The veil lifts just for a moment.
"I can hear you", I say it out loud, looking down at Choco and Pete who both have surprised and hopeful expressions. I can see it now. I was made this way, not born. Not born, not born, not born. I struggle to hold onto it, to hold onto any sort of feeling, but I slowly stop glitching and twitching.
"My system has gone down momentarily. Now rebooting", I look around at the ship, trying to orientate myself with the coordinates, before looking back down at the others. Their faces both change at my message. I don't understand.
"Two steps forwards, one step back, I guess", Choco sighs again. I do not understand why he always makes that sound.
"He talked this time", Pete smiles, "I think he's going get better any day now, and stay that way, too. I'm not afraid of you, Matt".
