Chapter 1
The thought of never walking into this building again floods my mind. One more year, just one more year till I get to walk out of those doors and never come back, to never have to see the people that make living almost unbearable, and to not have to be what everyone wants you to be. I just want to be who I am to dress how I want, to follow my own rules, and to live life how I want to live it. I have done what everyone wants I have never once done what I want to do. If not being able to live life the way you want to then I don't think its really worth living.
I walk into the school all conversations turn into whispers. Eyes dash from me to the nearest thing in sight. Watching the ones too scared to even be in the same room as me dashing off to their first class of the day. I walk towards my locker watching a path being made for me. The bell rings and the rest of the lingering students vanish in seconds hoping to not be late for class. I pull my bag out of my locker, slamming it shut. Turning around I find my best friends standing in the hallway looking at me with their arms crossed.
I must have forgotten to text them this morning telling them I didn't need a ride to school. Walking towards them the tardy bell rings which means we are all late for Ms. Epin's American Lit class. Which doesn't matter cause none of us were going to pay attention anyway.
Raelynn you didn't text us this morning we were all worried that you had done something stupid that would put you in the hospital. But then we remembered that you are our best friend and would never do that because we know that you would miss us too much and we would miss you too much, Scarlette stated.
Sorry guys this morning was a mess with my evil reincarnation of a step mother making comments on my outfit then her little she devil of children going through my stuff and to top it off my father won't be home for another week.
Rae oh my gosh it must have been horrible you should have called one of us you shouldn't have to deal with any of that, Brook voiced.
I'm fine guys really you don't need to worry about me.
We walked on to class forgetting the whole ordeal all together. Ms. Epin's class was boring like always until a couple of dumb jocks decided to start a brawl over some girl that to be honest wasn't worth fighting over. In the midst of it all Ms. Perfect's drink got spilt all over my jacket.
You stuck up piece of plastic my jacket better not be ruined.
Raelynn calm down its not like it cost you anything, Camille screeched.
Your gonna get it you conniving little.....
Girls and guys settle down detention for all of you, Ms. Epin hollers.
Class ended and everyone stampeded out the door. I had to talk to Ms. Epin which she always told me the same thing every time I got in trouble. Which was Raelynn your doing so well in school why ruin it. What has gotten into you I remember when you were such a sweet and innocent girl. The same old stupid questions that never changed me for the better. When will she come to the conclusion that I will never be the old me again.
The girls waited in the hall for me like they always do when I get told to stay after class. I am so glad I have them I don't know what I would do without them. They are the only people that keep me sane. Having detention is nothing. I'm just mad that I have to have it with that barbie doll of a girl.
The day drags on until I have to serve my detention. I walk into Ms. Epin's class finding the others already there. Everyone has taken a seat in the first two rows talking adamantly to each other. I find a seat in the far back of the room and I put in my earbuds. The room goes quiet when Ms. Epin walks in and everyone gets something out to do.
Finally detention is over and I leave this wretched place. But going home is no better. I call up the girls and we head to the track to see what kind of trouble we can get into. The track is like our home away from home. No one cares how we dress or how we act as long as we are civil towards each other. The girls pull up and I hop in. We get something to eat before we go. We head to the only place in town with the best fries and shakes which would be Mav's Shake n' Flip.
At the track its packed with new comers and regulars. I see some familiar faces of those I have raced in the past and won. The girls and I place our bets and find a spot in the back of someone's truck waiting for the races to begin. In the air you can smell the fumes coming from the engines being revved and of alcohol. We are all handed a beer from one of the guys in the truck next to us. Girls in skimpy leather legging and crop tops walk by along with muscle men wearing leather jackets. I spot someone out of the corner of my eye that isn't familiar to me. His deep blue eyes are filled with fire. His well toned stomach can be seen from under his grease stained white t-shirt that is paired with none other than a leather jacket. My eyes meet his and they turn soft. He looks away and continues to get ready for his race.
After the races everyone collects the money they won and either goes to the club to celebrate or to drink away their losses. Me and the girls tag along with a couple guys Amara and Brook are friends with. We never pass up free drinks and dancing.
We all get there and get our drinks dancing to whatever comes on. Girls dancing provocatively trying to get a chance with a stud. Guys being their usual muscle head selves hoping to get lucky tonight. But me and my friends are only here to have fun. I know I needed it to clear my head from everything that has went on today. Another round of shots makes it's way to us we happily down them and continue dancing.
A little while later the guy from early walks in with his friends. They get a round of beers making their way onto the dance floor hunting down a lucky lady to make the end of their night worth while. I head to the bathroom telling the girls where i'm going even though they are too drunk to care. Making my way through sweaty bodies and spilled drinks I finally reach my destination.
Joining my girls for one last dance before we all head home. I can feel a set of eyes watching me from a distance. Looking around I can't seem to find them so I just ignore them going back to dancing. The night comes to a close as we all giggle and stumble out of the club. Exiting the club the cold air hits my face and cigarette smoke strangles my nostrils.
I got home and everyone was asleep. I don't think I could have faced any of them tonight. Taking a shower and getting into bed my mind fills with images of him the mystery guy with the blue eyes and the body of a god. I fall asleep wondering who this mystery guy is hoping that I meet him again. The wind lulls me to sleep ending the night.
I wake up to the sound of pans clanking together and children screaming. Grabbing my phone I head to the bathroom to get ready. Today is going to be a long day. My phone buzzes and I pick it up. I have a message from Scarlette asking if I need a ride. I quickly respond and head downstairs. The twins are fighting about something and my stepmom is attempting to cook breakfast. I sneak out of the house hoping to draw no attention to myself.
After the girls picked me up we head to school hoping we aren't late. I wouldn't care it's not like I want to be here anyway. Pulling up to the school I notice a new group of kids standing on the school yard lawn. Only one seems familiar and that's only because he is the guy from last night. The girls notice my lingering eyes on mystery boy. They poke and prod at me hoping to get anything and everything out of me that they can.
So who is the cute stud over there that you can't take your eyes off of Rae? Amara asks.
That's the thing I don't know who he is I have seen him twice before today. Once at the track and then at the club.
How bout we go find out, Amara states.
No no one will be going over there to find out especially you Amara. How bout we all go inside so we aren't late.
You are such a buzz kill Rae, Amara says.
Shut up Amara and just stay out of we will probably find out sooner or later, Scarlette states.
My mind is lost I want to know who he is but at the same time I don't think I need another obstacle in my life right now. I just need to clear my mind and focus on school nothing else. The girls come in and we all go to Ms. Epin's class. Today I feel is going to be full of surprises. I pull out my sketch book and begin to draw trying to take my mind off of him. But it only leads to me drawing his eyes. The eyes that have me wanting more. The eyes that leave me in question. The eyes that left me awake last night.
Its soon time for lunch and you have kids rushing to talk about the latest gossip with their friends. I find the girls and take a seat between Amara and Brook with Scarlette sitting on the other side of Amara. Looking around the lunch room I don't see him which is a relief. I decide not to eat even though the girls give me disappointing looks. My phone buzzes and I take it out getting a message from an unknown number it reads...
I see you sneaking glances at me I don't mind I sneak glances of you too. P.S. Don't think you can keep your distance from me for long. I really want to get to know you and my boys really want to get to know your little friends.
I reply: Who are you and how did you get my number? Just never mind idc just please leave me and my friends alone we have enough on our plate right now we don't need anymore distractions.
A: I'm Asher and one of your friends gave me your number I think her name was Amera or something. And how would we be such a distraction to you guys?
Me: I'm Raelynn and her name is Amara. Last year, we uh just had some curve balls thrown are way and we all made a pledge to never let anymore into our lives. And I don't even know why i'm telling you this cause I don't even know you.
A: That could change. ;)
Me: I don't think so. Well I better go the bell for lunch is about to ring I better go.
A: Bye talk to you later Rae. ;)
I turn my phone off and put it back in my pocket. Looking around to make sure he isn't near. The blood rushes from my face I can tell that I look like I have seen a ghost. Questions rush around in my head. How did he get my number? Who is he? Why is he so fond of me? The girls stare at me with puzzled looks. I tell them not to worry about it and that i'm fine.
When I get to my last class of the day I am still shaken up about what happened earlier. I am constantly looking around me to make sure he isn't there. In the hallways I am always making sure that I don't run into him. He keeps me on my toes I just don't need this right now with everything going on. The bell rings and I rush out the door ready to get home and forget about this day altogether.
