4. First Entrance Song
After a year, I turned pro, but instead of going on TV, I had to participate in dark matches, matches that are taped, but not for broadcasting. I was going up against a fellow Young Lion named, Kazuchika Okada, who would go on to be The Rainmaker and the face of New Japan Pro Wrestling.
During that time, Kaori became a professional Yacht competitor and was winning in any race she was in. I was happy for her, you know? What kind of brother wouldn't want their sister to pursue something?
Anyway, when I turned pro, I had no song to enter to. I looked at so many songs on the internet, YouTube was becoming big at the time and I needed help finding the right song.
I grew up listening to so many old fashioned J-Rock and J-Pop songs that I didn't know what to choose from. Eventually, I settled at "Rouge no Dengon" by Yumi Matsutoya. The reason I did is because it had the word "Red" in it since I'm looking to make my opponents bleed.
I thought it sounded great at first because there's a beat and an intro we could fix up, no problem, but after a few more times, I realized, it didn't even fit my character, so discarded it. I still listen to it, but I won't use it as my entrance song.
The next song I looked at was "House of The Rising Sun" by The Animals. I thought the introduction to the song was so cool because it could mean the end to anyone who looked to beat me in the ring, but the problem is that I didn't know English, so we moved on from it.
Minoru actually told me to start listening to Ayumi Nakamura's music for inspiration, and maybe there would be something that fits, so I did, and I came across this, "Tsubasa No Oreta Angel", or "Angel With Broken Wings". I decided to give it a listen because it really piqued my interest. When I finished listening to it, I actually almost cried because I could relate to the song: me, being autistic, looking to succeed in the wrestling industry. I loved it, so we decided to give it a try.
The problem was that I had to see if Ayumi was willing to let me use her second single, the one song that made her a megastar in the mid-1980s. We had to see if she was okay with it, so Minny and I went over to a cafe to meet the woman. She was performing there and when we walked in, she was about to perform.
It looked like she was going to perform one of her new songs, but had a different idea: she was going to sing Minoru's song, just because he and I walked in.
When the beat got up, she was moving around like she was in a trance until I realized she was dancing. When the guitar started revving up, she sang, as I quote the lyrics...
"Tell me this Why do people continue to search?
For an endless painful dream of tommorow
Only gazing at the stars on a sad night
You wanted to make sure I kissed you
You've continued to chase it the whole time
When will you seize your dream?
Although nobody knows...
Nothing can change your indisposable feelings
Oh in the storm, while facing it
Like a bird about to flap its wings in the light, just be the wind!
How many more miles is there to reach the goal?
For the fight, you're giving it all but you want to
stay alive and feel something
One of these days, tommorow will never become dim with your tears
I don't just want an answer and it's fine as long as you have a dream
Oh in the storm, while facing it like a bird about
to flap its wings in the light, just flap your wings away
I have to be a lonely warrior oh
I have to be a lonely warrior tonight."
After she sang, the people applauded as Minoru and I did as well, but I only applauded because I know that if I didn't, Suzuki would kill me.
After the show, she walked over to us and my Gods, I thought she was a beaut!
This is Ayumi, and I'll give you my perception of how I met Kai for the first time.
When Minoru and this young man walked in the cafe, I had to sing his entrance music because he commands respect. You see, Suzuki always had this look in his eye, saying that if you disrespect anyone of his peers, he'll massacre you. He also makes sure that I'm respected too because, after all, I'm the one who wrote his song! Ha ha.
Anyway, after I sang "Kaze Ni Nare", and my performance was over, I met with Minoru and we hugged, catching up with one another, but this young man who he brought with, I thought he looked so cute! He had these innocent little eyes that really endeared me and this haircut that was a bit messy, but he was adorable.
When Minoru told me his name was Kai, I thought it was such a cute name and I loved him right away! The one thing that surprised me about Kai was that he didn't have over the top mannerisms like Minoru would, instead, he would shake my hand and look at me in the eyes. That told me he was raised so well by his family.
When we went over to a table to talk, Minoru actually let Kai do the talking and I had to listen. "So, Miss Nakamura," he said. "I want to know if I can use 'Tsubasa No Oreta Angel' for my entrance theme." I asked, "Why would you?" Minoru spoke up and said, "Ayumi, this young man is my protege and we've been looking at songs to fit his character. We thought if we used some of your music for him, he would be a great wrestler in the years to come. What's even more surprising is that, he has a learning disability."
Did I hear him correctly? "A disability?", I asked. "In the form of the autism spectrum. After all, I am training him!", Minoru said. "I need to hear from Kai, no offense Minoru", I replied to him. "None taken, Ayumi", he said.
"Go on, Kai", said Minoru as I started to listen to Kai's story and his reason as to why he would want to use one of my songs.
Kai explained, "Everyday, when I come home from school, I'd cry because I've been bullied by kids who saw me differently. Wrestling was the only thing I'd watch whenever I felt alone. When I watched guys like Minoru, I imagine myself in those matches and fighting back against the bullies and winning, but the one thing that got me to watch him was his entrance music. I'd listen to it almost everyday and it helps me look forward to see what's next for me. As I sit here with you and Minoru, having one of your songs as my entrance theme would benefit me and motivate me to go out in the ring to perform my very best. So please, allow me to use 'Tsubasa No Oreta Angel' for my entrance song because I listened to it and I legit almost cried. Can I please? I promise to pay the copyrights."
Hearing this young man, telling me about his life before wrestling, listening to "Kaze Ni Nare" for motivation so he could make it through the day really warmed up my heart, but it also broke it. Seeing him explain about his disability and telling me that he wanted to be a successful wrestler just gave me enough reason to allow him to use that single. I mean, if that single really helped me made it to the top, why not for Kai?
"Don't worry about the copyrights, Kai", I said. "Use that song. That song strapped me to a rocket back in the day, and now as I listen to you telling me all this, I want you to have it. I'll pay for the copyrights because your story is that special. If you ever want me to perform for you, just let me know."
It made Kai happy and, although we barely know each other, he hugged me without a second thought! I laughed at this as Minoru actually giggled as well.
I'm serious when I say this, if Minoru and I got married and had a daughter, I think he'd be perfect for her because he's just so cute!
Kai here.
It was official, I was allowed to have "Tsubasa No Oreta Angel" because Ayumi Nakamura's music not only defined my character, but my career as well.
