It was Scar who first found the letter. Well, technically it was Jellie, but it was Scar who brought it through.
'It's for you.' Is all he says. His confusion matches mine. Post doesn't arrive today. I blink, and slowly take it, before realising the next thing wrong with it.
All that's written on the front is my name. No dog-faced stamp of Ren's approval showing it's passed the security checks that allow it to be sent.
And even then another even more confusing realisation comes to me. It's easy enough to slip a secret letter into the tower post box at the bottom of our tower block. No one cares enough to do anything about it.
But this person didn't.
Something in this letter is so private it's better to climb 28 storeys to deliver it than let other people in the block of flats see it. And if they're willing to go that far, why not tell me in person. Unless the mystery sender doesn't even want Scar or Mumbo to know about it.
'Its the resistance.' I realise with a sigh.
'What?'
'Impulse's resistance. The one I joined for a month after the vault trick and then left. Even though I've told them I'm not joining...' But I still open the letter, curious, and find the weirdest thing yet.
It's not that it's written in code, it's that it's written in outdated resistance code that happens to be the only one I know.
Someone did their research.
'What does it say?' I return focus to Scar. He's taken a seat on the sofa opposite. Jellie jumps into his lap, curling up to sleep.
'I don't know. But someone knows me too well.'
Tonight, 10pm, 5, 3, 1.
Long live the king
'Ok, this is creepy.' I admit. 'Someone knows my resistance tag thing. The secret passcode I used to get into the base.'
'What?'
'Someone knows too much about me even though- the resistance don't even know I live here!' I realise with a jolt. 'They don't know this is my home!'
'Then who sent the letter? Could it be anyone from... Before?'
'Before' being before I met Scar, around half a year ago, on the streets. He was hurt, alone, and begging for a home. I accepted, though mainly because of Jellie. All I know of the incident or his previous life are vague details about an explosion and losing everything. And at the same time, I kept my own past private. My parts in the Vault and resistance.
'No... Someone's been watching me very closely and I don't like that.' I shove the letter back in the envelope and chuck it on a table. 'So I'm not just going to meet them down a random street!'
Trying to put it out of mind, I stand, walking to the kitchen. Scar follows.
'Aren't you curious?'
'No.' I don't look at him as I grab a box of cookies Scar made from the cupboard. 'It's probably just dangerous.'
'You're lying.'
'I'm wary of danger. Whoever wrote that letter made sure that only I would read it.'
'If they know so much about you then why can't you try and learn about them back? Spy on them.'
'This isn't your problem, Scar. It's mine. And I'm dealing with it by ignoring.' I return to the living room. The letter is still there, as curious as before. I don't look at it, instead sitting on the other side of the room.
'This person knows where you live... It seems to me like they've done everything they can to prove they're not dangerous.'
'What? Act like a creep?' I swat Scar's hand away as he tries to steal my cookie, handing over the box instead.
'It's not Ren... or the resistance.'
'It might still be the resistance... though I told them to remove all information they had on me when I left, and then moved to live with Mumbo.' Every part of me wants to cross the room and pick up the letter again. But I can't get involved in illegal activity. Not now, when it's safer and in your favour to stay out of action and live with your head down. 'They can't know my location, unless they have spies.'
'Maybe they live in this building too...'
'Then why not tell me to go to their house in this building.' I don't know why I'm shooting down all of Scar's ideas. 'Look, I know this conflict better than you do...'
'You don't know that.' Snaps Scar, before apologising. 'Grian, come on.' He steals another cookie. 'This doesn't look suspicious.'
'Except the fact they don't want anyone else to see it except me, and all it gives is a date and location.' I finish my third cookie. Scar wisely takes the box away before I eat all of them, closing the lid as he tries to explain.
'Fine, it's not unsuspicious. But if they spent so long getting to know you... what codes you know... where you live... then why would they just hurt you?'
'They might be forcing me back into the action again. When I need some peace for once in my life.'
'Grian...'
'I'm not talking about this any more, Scar. I've made up my mind.' I stand, leaving. As I do, a stab of guilt fills me but I don't have time to think about it as a welcome distraction comes through the front door.
'Mumbo!'
'Hey Grian!' He smiles back at me. 'How's everything?'
'Good... good.' My mind returns to the letter again.
'Oh, hey Mumbo!' Scar appears too. I glance over, hoping he won't mention the letter. 'Good day?'
'Alright... how's everything here?'
'Grian got a weird letter.'
'Scar!' Mumbo's expression turns to confusion.
'Resistance?'
'I don't know.' I admit. 'It came straight to the door. Someone wanted only me to see it... all it gave was a coded location and time. Tonight.'
'Goodness- I- are you going to go?'
'I don't know. Scar's trying to tell me it's not dangerous.'
'Go armed.'
'Scar- oh my goodness.' I cross my arms, 'This- what part of 'I don't want to get involved in politics' doesn't make sense you?'
'It'll be exciting.' Scar insists. 'A chance to make a difference... explore the city... go on an adventure!'
'A chance to get myself caught, killed, or stuck in stuff I didn't want to be part of!' I snap back. 'It's my letter, it's my choice.' But even as I speak I realise it's not just Scar I'm trying to convince but myself too. He's right.
I'm going to follow the letter.
