Chapter Six
Billy woke up, groaning and rubbing his weary eyes still groggy upon awakening. He squinted his eyes at a bright light that stung them if he looked too close.
"Ugh...Clara..." He groaned at the first sight of this bright light, believing that his little sister had come into his room and shone a flashlight in his eyes in hopes of waking him up to play. That had happened before...too many times.
"Clara...stop. I'm trying to-" Billy stopped immediately, as he felt around with his hands, and realized that what he was feeling was not his usual blanket. It almost felt like...
"Grass?! What...I'm outside?!" Billy shouted out, fully awake now and aware that he was not in his bed, but outside lying in a plain of grass green with rain.
"How did I get here...I...CLARA!" Billy was almost screaming now. But Clara did not answer his cries. She was nowhere to be found, and as Billy looked around even more, he realized that his house was nowhere to be found. There was nothing around him that he could recognize.
Suddenly, a loud rustle from a bush next to him had startled him. He jumped up instinctively as whatever was inside of it had come rushing out, and Billy felt embarrassed when he realized it was just a rabbit that had scared him. He sighed with relief. Then, he looked down at his legs and gasped, realizing that he had stood up on his own, and that there were no casts on them to hold him back.
"What...?" Billy knew that there was no way that his legs would have been fully healed since last night. That was when he began to believe that he was in a dream. This couldn't be real. It was a strange dream, but it had to be a dream nonetheless. That would be the only logical explanation for everything that Billy had seen and done.
But as Billy had been lead to believe that this was all just a silly dream, he looked down at his legs and smiled. If he could run, jump, and play for just the short, precious life of his dream, why shouldn't he? He had almost forgotten what it was like to feel his legs carrying him across a wide, open space as the wind would blow through his hair and cool him down from the hot summer air.
Before he knew it, he had broken into a run. He started laughing with a joy that couldn't be put into words as he felt an overwhelming sense of freedom overcoming his body. He could do anything now, for just these precious moments.
He ran and ran through the grassy plain, no obstacles to interrupt him and make him turn back. A wide open space was all there seemed to be, and Billy vowed to never stop running until he was pulled away from this wondrous dreamworld.
"HEY!" A voice shouted out suddenly, shattering the daze that Billy had been in while running, as he stopped and looked around. He couldn't identify who had owned the voice that shouted, and that began to worry him. But then again, he shouldn't be worried. It was all just a dream, anyhow. A dream where he was fully aware.
"HEY!" It shouted again, even louder than before. It was the voice of a girl, maybe a bit older than he was. Billy seemed to find his voice as he called out cautiously,
"Who's there...?"
No answer. Billy felt nervous all over again, and started to pinch himself lightly, hoping that maybe he could be taken out of this dreamworld early and wake up to find himself safe in bed, entangled in his familiar blankets. But to his dismay, that didn't work.
"Who is there?!" Billy blurted out, a bit louder than he had meant to. He felt the urge to run and hide, but before he could...
"Oh, I thought you would never come, good Sir!"
And from behind him, a girl stood panting. She was a young girl dressed in clothes that Billy had never seen anyone dress in before, except in old books. It was a patched up gown styled in a way that Billy believed that this girl was from a way different century. She was wearing old, brown shoes as well, most definitely not running shoes, and this girl seemed to have been running for hours.
"Why were you running so fast? It took me a long time to catch up to you!"
"Wh...what do you mean?" Billy questioned suspiciously, giving this strange girl a curious glance.
"What do you mean, 'what do you mean'?" She answered back, looking him up and down. "You're Sir Edward, aren't you? You should know me well."
"What...uh...I'm sorry, but I really don't know who you are...and my name isn't Edward." Billy then added quickly, "Look, I don't have time for this. I need to know whether or not this is a dream, okay? Just tell me that if you can. Am I in a dream?"
The girl looked at him, and almost seemed amused. Billy did not like the look she was giving him.
"Hello? Answer me! Am I in a dream?"
The girl then started laughing, shaking her head at Billy as if he were supposed to know the answer.
"Of course not, Sir Edward. Don't you know that everyone has been expecting your arrival? You are Sir Edward The Third, the greatest knight of our time!"
Billy paused, about to question this strange girl once more, before he came to a sudden realization. The name the girl had mentioned sounded strangely familiar to him. And then, it all came back. The memory of his mother trying to read the princess book to him just a day ago, the book that he had disliked for all of this time. Sir Edward The Third was the name of the knight his mother had mentioned in the book. So that meant...
This was no dream. Billy was inside the strange book, and with no idea of how to get out.
