Chapter 24
Manami's POV
I ran and ran. From what, I did not know. To where, I did not care. All I knew was that I had to keep going no matter what. I don't know how I got here. I don't know what I am suppose to do but something told me to keep heading in the direction I was heading.
Trees blurred past me and began to turn into grass, then soil and before I knew it I was in a dessert terrain but I knew I still couldn't stop. My eyes were beginning to dry out, my mouth felt like sandpaper and the stitch I had gotten from running so much was slowing me down immensely. I had no idea how long I had been running but my legs ached and were threatening to give in at any moment.
Eventually my vision began to blur and the scene before me began to fade but before it did I saw two figures running towards me and I just knew I could stop running now; I had reached my target and could finally rest.
I awoke in a strange bed and ached all over. I had no idea how I had got here or what happened before I started running all I knew was that I was safe now. I didn't know how but I had a gut instinct that I could trust whoever brought me here.
"Hello honey" I heard someone say.
I watched as a young woman with dark black haired and bright green eyes walked into the room. She wore the softest of smiles and was approaching me slowly so I wouldn't be afraid. When she was close enough she bent down to my level and handed me a glass of water which I gladly accepted and gulped down in a matter of seconds.
"What's your name little girl?" she asked me and I looked to the ground trying to sort through my jumbled thoughts before finally stating, "Manami, My name is Manami". The young woman smiled at me with sympathy in her eyes and she held out her hand to me.
"It's nice to meet you Manami, my name is Naomi. Can you tell me why a little girl your age was wondering around the dessert on her own?" she questioned and I immediately blurted out the answer as if I were programmed to.
"My family was killed and I had no where else to go" I told her and she nodded looking very saddened. I didn't even know I had a family before this but somehow I knew to tell her that. It was very peculiar but I decided to just ignore it; it was probably nothing.
"Hey Naomi have you seen... Oh I'm sorry I didn't realize she was awake" A tall man with thick brown hair and chocolate brown eyes said as he walked in, giving Naomi a quick kiss and turning his attention to me. "How are you feeling?" he asked and I shrugged causing him to chuckle and ruffle my hair.
"I'm glad you are feeling better. You had us quite worried kid" he grinned and I couldn't help but return his gesture with a small smile.
"Darling, Manami over here has no where else to go" Naomi told the man and he frowned. It looked as if with just a look of each others eye he understood what she knew. He then turned back to me.
"I guess we will just have too take care of you. If you don't mind that is little Manami" he smiled and I shook my head telling him it was fine with me. "Alright then it's settled. Welcome to the family Manami, I'm Daichi but most people call me Dai" he said and Naomi quickly grinned at him and then hugged me tightly.
"You're going to be okay now Manami, I promise" she murmured in my ear and I nodded suddenly feeling safe and above all else happy; even though I have forgotten the last four years of my life, I felt like I was home.
"Manami?" I snapped out of my daze and looked towards Sasori feeling slightly dazed. "You found anything yet?" He asked me and I shook my head.
"No, not a thing" I replied while picking up another scroll and trying hard not to get lost in my thoughts. I had been remembering everything since I touched the wall and all my memories that were hazy or non-existent were starting to come back to me at a rapid rate.
I sighed and looked over to the corner where I had last seen Deidara and chuckled as I watched him sleeping on top of a scroll and I could have sworn he was drooling. I stood up and began walking over to him to prevent him from ruining any writing that was on the scroll. I carefully lifted the scroll from under his face and brought it with me to my original spot on the floor.
"We would be done a lot faster if the brat hadn't of came along" Sasori growled slightly and I rolled my eyes.
"Give him a break Sasori. He is going to need more sleep than normal if those wounds of his are ever going to heal" I stated and he just sent one last glare at Deidara before looking back at the scroll he had.
"Maybe we are looking at this all wrong. What if we were to research the man that hid the pieces of the puppet? He might have left a few pieces in places that he visited frequently. What if we try looking there first?" Sasori wondered and I sat in thought for a moment.
"I suppose that could work. None of these scrolls tell you anything about where the pieces are hidden. It seems the only scroll that had that information is now in the clutches of Hakujo. Alright well I'll start looking for more scrolls concerning the man" I replied and got up to search the library more.
I came back with a pile of scrolls in my hands and set them down only to find something fall out of the middle of them. I bent down to pick it up and gasped softly as I saw a little brown book that had Diary plastered across the front of it.
"What is it?" Sasori asked curiously and I slowly opened it up and became very confused as I noticed it was blank.
"I guess it's nothing. I thought it was my mother's diary but it's just an empty book" I sighed and slumped down into my spot again. "I'll get stuck into these scrolls, you take those." I instructed and he nodded doing what I asked immediately. I kept looking through scrolls but something about that book wouldn't stop bugging me.
