=======================================================

I stared out the window and finally saw the sun rising. I had been up all night fighting to stay awake. I always found it to scary to sleep as I was afraid that those memories from all those nights I was stuck with my aunt would return to haunt me.

I got up and made my bed before walking into the bathroom to get ready. I then walked downstairs, entering the kitchen and began to cook some breakfast for Sasori and Chiyo. I pretended to smile when I saw Sasori entering the room, rubbing his eyes sleepily.

"Why are you up so early?" he asked me.

"Sorry I didn't mean to wake you." I bowed my head slightly to apologise and he laughed at me. I wanted to ask what was so funny but kept my mouth shut and set the table.

"Why are you always so quiet?"

"Children are meant to be seen, not heard." I informed him simply and he looked at me confused.

"Then why do you talk to me?" he queried and I thought about it for a while.

"I don't know. You are just easy to talk to and I trust you." I admitted and when I looked up I saw him grinning.

"Do you not trust Granny then?"

"I do. I was just told to be respectful to adults and I don't want to upset her by asking unnecessary questions." I replied and jumped when I saw Mrs Chiyo walking through the door.

"Manami dear, I won't punish you for talking to me. Asking questions is how we learn so don't be afraid to ask them." I heard Mrs Chiyo tell me when she walked into the room.

"Sorry, I didn't know that." I apologised again and Mrs Chiyo laughed. "M-may I ask what is so funny?" I questioned her hesitantly and she came over to me and kneeled down to my level.

"You're not living with your Aunt anymore Manami so there is no need to act like such a grown up. Be yourself and act like a six year old should." She smiled and then took the spatula out of my hand and started to take over cooking for me.

"And another thing, I don't want to see you getting up so early just to cook us breakfast. A six year old shouldn't know how to cook like this so take a seat and allow me to finish cooking for you, my dear." She then turned her attention back to the pancakes I had half made and I sat down at the table awkwardly.

I watched as Mrs Chiyo sat down a plate of food and I felt a little sick to my stomach.

"Something wrong Manami?" Sasori questioned and I looked up at him.

"No, I'm fine." I told him and he nodded turning back to his food.

"Are you sure you are alright Manami?" This time it was Mrs Chiyo that asked.

" I don't want to be rude... I'm just not hungry Mrs Chiyo." I replied in a monotone voice.

"You haven't eaten anything though, dear." She said.

"I know and I apologise. I'm not used to eating so much." I informed her and she looked at me slightly shocked and... Saddened?

"That's fine just eat what you can Manami." She said and I nodded.

"So are you excited for your first day at school?" Mrs Chiyo asked and I felt my palms go sweaty at the thought.

" Yes." I told her and Sasori chuckled at my response.

"Don't worry Manami I will be with you as our classes are joined due to the small amount of staff our village has." He informed me and I faked another smile.

After we ate breakfast Granny Chiyo had taken us to school. Sasori and I were starting to walk to class and with each step I felt the anxiety grow but somehow I managed to keep a straight face. We walked into a classroom and sat down beside each other as we waited for the rest of the class to get here.

I looked around and noticed some familiar faces from when I used to go to play dates that my mother arranged before my Aunt 'looked after' me. I spotted a familiar young boy around my age with black raven coloured hair and ocean blue eyes. I remembered we were friendly towards one another but now all he and his friends seemed to do was stare at me angrily.

"Okay class settle down."

I was snapped out of my thoughts when the teacher arrived and tried to settle everyone down so he could call the register. Everyone's names were called out but mine and then the teacher called me down to the front.

I took a deep breath and walked slowly down to the bottom of the classroom where he told me to introduce myself. I cleared my throat and looked up to the giant crowd of children before focusing on Sasori's smiling face which seemed to settle my nerves a little.

"I'm Manami. The thing I like the most is to create puppets and I hate a lot of things." I told the whole class showing no emotion in my voice or on my face.

"It's nice to meet you Manami. Now class I want you to make Manami feel at home." He told them using the typical teacher line and I started to walk back to my seat beside Sasori.

The day flew in and before I knew it we were outside for lunch. Sasori ran over to see his friends and I walked off in the opposite direction so that I wasn't a bother to him. I was making my way to a bench that was beside a beautiful tree until I was shoved into a wall and surrounded by the raven haired boy and his two friends.

"Is there something you want?" I questioned them and they glared harder at me due to my lack of fear.

"Yeah, you're the one who got my father put into a high security prison!" He growled at me.

"I'm sorry but I don't know how I put your father in jail." I told him feeling slightly confused but he just got angrier.

"You said you saw him breaking into your house the night your parents died!" He yelled at me and I shrank back in fear.

"Yeah well your father was the one that murdered my parents, I saw it with my own eyes!" I yelled back at him and he grabbed me by the throat.

"You lie! You know what though? Your parents deserved what happened to them, my mother said they had it coming. She says they were unfit parents, in fact rumours are they stole a baby of a nearby village and sacrificed her to their so called God!" He smirked at me and I felt the anger burning up inside if me.

The next thing I knew I had jumped to attack him only for him to grab my shirt and rip it causing my scars to show. I tried to hide them as best I could but the others still noticed it. They began laughing and teasing me causing my eyes to water.

"Leave her alone." I heard someone shout and when I looked up I saw Sasori standing above me in between me and the other three boys. I begun to feel my heart race as I noticed the vicious look in their eyes and I tried to warn Sasori to leave but he still stood there in front of me.

I closed my eyes tightly as I noticed one of the boys run to attack him and I felt my breath hitch in my chest when I heard a loud smacking noise. When I opened my eyes I was surprised however to see Sasori was fine and that our teacher had gotten in the middle of the two and had taken the impact himself.

"My office now!" He growled slightly at the three boys, who didn't hesitate to obey, before turning around to face me giving me a saddened look. "Your Aunt did all this huh?" he stated more than asked when he saw the enormous amounts of scars and bruises that still hadn't healed scattered all over my arms.

"Take her to the front office Sasori. You and Manami are excused from school for the rest of the day, your Grandmother should be here to collect you soon." He said while handing me his coat to cover the scars. I thanked him quietly without looking up from the ground and followed Sasori.

When we returned home I walked upstairs and went into my room, collapsing on the bed. I curled up into a ball and forced the tears to go away. I jumped slightly when I saw Sasori standing above me looking quite concerned.

"Are you alright? You've been up here for hours!" he exclaimed and I fell silent. Hours? I didn't realise it had been that long.

"Yeah, I'm fine." I told him smiling and he smiled sadly at me.

"I can tell when you are fake smiling Manami."

"I will be fine Sasori thank you." I assured him and he nodded in return.

"You should get some sleep you look exhausted." He smiled and stated to pull the covers up over me.

"This really isn't necessary Sasori I don't even sleep anyway." I complained and he stopped what he was doing and stared at me wide eyed.

'You've never slept since you came here three days ago?" He gasped.

"Actually I haven't slept for two years." I chuckled slightly as he became lost for words.

"Why?" He quizzed and I shrugged slightly.

"I just never feel safe enough." I told him and he suddenly smiled down at me.

"I know how about I keep guard and you sleep for tonight?" He asked and before I had the chance to decline his offer he had turned the lights off and got into my bed with me and I couldn't help but stiffen.

"Don't you trust me Manami?" He questioned and I forced myself to relax slightly.

"I do I'm just not used to close contact with other people. Sorry." I mumbled the last part and he chuckled.

"Don't be just relax and trust that I will protect you!" He spoke happily and I nodded slightly and tried to fight my exhaustion but before I knew it everything had went dark.
