Chapter 4
For some reason I couldn't sleep. Thoughts of the nameless man from yesterday, and the night before, clouded my mind. Was it fate that brought us together for the second time within twenty-four hours, or was it just a coincidence? What if it was fate and I blew the whole plan by not actually speaking to him. Oh well, this is a new day and I cant let the events of yesterday effect my actions and thoughts today. Since I had nothing better to do, I decided to wake up an catch the seven o'clock news.
I curled up on the couch with a mug of coffee between my hands and a blanket spread across my legs. It wasn't really that cold, but it was just a really soft blanket. Once they started to report on a woman posing as a teenager at a high school, I zoned out looking down at my hands and running my fingers along the rim of the cup.
"And now the news that most people have been waiting for; an up date on the horrific bridge accident."
My head snapped up and tuned in to the news now. I am one of those people waiting on this update. I crossed my fingers and hoped it wasn't what I thought. Not that my world would stop spinning if the worst did actually happen.
"Everyone remembers the car crash from 5 months ago that took the life of an innocent couple while one out of the three, the drunk driver, ended up missing. Just last night a dead body washed up to the shore 15 miles from the site of the car crash. Officers and paramedics took care of all the damage done and came to the conclusion that the body was in fact the owner of the car; Mark Spencer."
I couldn't listen to the rest. So it really was him.
I remember the day after is party the news came on and said there was a terrible car accident. Because of all the rain a red SUV hydroplaned and crashed into a small Mini Cooper killing all passengers, and ended up driving straight off the bridge into the river below. The SUV was fished out but the driver wasn't inside, leading the police to believe they didn't have their seat belt on. When they searched the car they found about three empty bottles of scotch. Again, that led them to think the driver was drunk.
I can still remember the feeling that I got when I saw what was left of Mark's car. Of course they didn't know who it belonged to, but I did. It was all too familiar. I couldn't believe that it was his. I honestly wished he died so I would never have to see him again, but there was this tiny, and I mean tiny, piece of me that hoped he was okay.
The next part of the news report caught my attention again.
"And now we actually have a recent interview for the brother of the deceased boy."
David.
First let me say I am so sorry for your loss.
"Thanks man."
What have you and your family been going through these last five months?
"My mother won't leave his room, my father has buried himself in work, and I've just been trying to carry on with a normal life."
When the accident first happened, what did you think?
"I was thinking I should have known better. That night he had been drinking alot and when he told me he was going out I was the one to toss him the keys. My head wasn't straight that night either."
So is it safe to say you were drinking there with him that night too?
"Yes sir."
You said he told you he was going out, did he tell you why or what he was going out for?
"It was more like a who."
And who was this spicific person? Is it safe to say?
"He told me his girlfriend started a fight with him and just left him there. Once he started thinking clearly he said he wanted to go work things out with her."
Mark is dead because he wanted to try and patch things up with me? He must of been really drunk that night if he couldn't remember that how we left things, you clearly couldn't patch that mess up.
So you are blaming this so called girlfriend?
"I'm not pointing any fingers, but if it came down to it; yes. She is the reason my brother is dead and why my family is in so much pain, and believe me when I say I intend to make things right again."
The look in his eyes screamed danger. 'Make things right'? I watched him make a fist over his other fist, a sign that said he was ready for a fight. I quickly turned the tv off and stood from the couch.
How could he blame his brothers careless and drunken driving on me? Luckily David doesn't know where I live but now he is out to get me, to avenge his brother, who clearly told him lies in the first place. I need a body gaurd or something. I decided I might as well get ready for work and report in early. I'll just cancel the meet up with the girls.
I got to work about thirty minutes after John got here. As a surprise I got us donuts for breakfast so we could pig out in the break room. Not like anyone would show up this early in the morning.
"So when are you going to hire someone else?" I asked taking a nibble on my glazed donut.
"I'm not sure I thought it just being you and me was good enough." He chuckeled. Obviously he didn't mean it. I scrunched my nose up and shook my head. "I mean, come on girl, we are never that busy anyway. You can handle it by your self."
"Your right, so I guess you can spend that extra money on better advertisments." I joked around. He let out a sarcastic laugh as he dusted off his hand and announced that he was going back out in front. I finished off my donut and just as I was about to walk through the door my phone rang. It was Tiff.
"Hello?" I answered, hoping to keep this conversation short and simple. I didnt really facy speaking about what I thought she would bring up.
"Girl, I am so sorry! My brother said he saw the news. I can't believe it was him." she gushed. Out of all the girls Tiff was the one who truly hated him with all her heart. On more than multipul occasions she told me 'he smelled fishy'. She only put up with him because she knew I actually had feelings for him unlike my other ex's. So honestly I don't think she is all that sorry.
"It's fine really. I honestly wasn't suprise, the news just confirmed my theory." I said trying to swollow the lump in my throat.
"Well why did you cancel this morning?" she had that edge in her voice that told me she was trying to change the subject, but obviously her mind stayed on the previous topic.
"I decided to turn in early for work." I pushed my self off the table and clumsily walked through the door. I was about to round the corner when I heard two voices talking.
"A box of...gloves?" John's voice asked.
"Yes." another gruff voice answered, but I couldn't think of who it was. I peeked around the corner and almost fell flat on my face. Fate works in interesting ways.
It was that guy. I couldn't take my eyes off of him. He was dressed a little different today. Of course he still had basketball shorts on, and his new Nike shoes, but this time he had a gray muscle shirt adorning his upper half.
I kept hearing this annoying buzz in my ear. Assuming it was a fly I swung my hand around but hit my own hand. I completely forgot I was talking to Tiffany.
"Cambriella!!" Tiff screamed through the speaker. I took a few steps back so hopefully they wouldn't hear me muter a few choice words to her.
"I thought we agreed to drop the full name." I hissed in a low voice. She giggled her high pitch musical laugh that usually got annoyng after the first five seconds.
"Anyway, girls night out. Tonight. Club downtown?"
"Yeah yeah, sounds perfect. See ya later." I rushed and ended the call. I took a deep breath before walking around the corner and making a b-line to my station. I dont know why because they were standing right infront of it.
"Oh, Cam, is there a box of gloves in the back?" John asked. When he said my name the strangers head snapped up as well. And just like yesterday my heart skipped a beat when I made contact with those green eyes. They wern't as dull and cold as they were yesterday, but they wern't all that soft today either.
"Yeah I believe so. Do I need to bring them out?"
"Please?" I scurried back to the back to get the box and then hurried back to the front. Just as I sat the box down the main phone rang. John looked at me and I raised my eyebrows at him. Did he expect me to get that too? I tried to tell him we need someone else.
"I'll get that." John said as he fled the scene leaving me with the nameless stranger. I wish I knew his name, it would be better than calling him that guy or nameless stranger.
"I'm guessing this isn't pre paid?" I bit my lip and waited for his answer. For some reason when he looked at me I wanted to smile but I had to refrain from doing so unless I want to look weird.
"No." well I guess he is the one word answer kind of guy now isn't he. I scanned the box and waited for the price to pop up. While I looked on the screen I felt his eyes stay on me, and when I glanced over at him his gaze didn't faulter.
"$355.95." I said and he dug around in his pocket for the money. "Do you need help with that?" That is such a stupid question Cam. Look at those muscles, he doesn't need help with anything!!
He chuckled. Gosh; music to my ears. "No thanks. I usually don't let woman carry the heavy loads." Before he grabbed the box he pulled out his phone and checked what I guess was a message.
"Oh well, have a good day." I sighed and leaned forward over the counter on my arms.
He pushed the door open with his back with the box in his hands, and looked back at me, "See you later."
((In case you forgot, Mark was her abusive boyfriend from the first chapter. i'm pretty sure I made that clear up there but just in case. Okay, resume to the next chapter!! It will be in Harry's POV))
