The H.E.O. ~ Chapter 14

Narbeth reacts instantly.

     " We are ? Really ? Why ? "

" It's the only way to find out who Winnie's parents were. " I answer.

" I could just hack into their servers. " suggests my twin way too casually.

" They only have paper versions of, well, everything. The people who work there aren't big on technology. " explains his best friend.

" Wait, wait, wait... Why did you think we left to meet them here, Ice ? "

" Research. I never thought someone as obsessed with getting straight-As as you would actually skip school. "

" I've got the whole day off... And I am not obsessed ! " I punch him in the arm and go on. " Should we take Teleportation Sceptres or ..? "

" How about we take a normal mean of transportation ? "

Peter Pan's son immediately agrees with her, we do too. After leaving the school's perimeter much more easily than one would expect, we head for a nearby high-speed rail station. We walk in a close formation and try not to draw attention on ourselves. Intrigued, I read the huge sign over the building : Σιδηροδρομικός σταθμός υψηλής ταχύτητας. The only Earth language I learned is English, like most inhabitants of The Other World, so I have no idea what language that is. What I do know, according to what the two orphans told us, is that the Happy Ending Orphanage is located near our high school... Sometimes. The thing is, our dear old education establishment is a Teleporting Location. There are two-way portals, from and to it, and the ones used to head out never lead to the same place since the ones going inward change location but always bring anyone who'd cross them to the desired building. That's why I, among many other students, use a Teleportation Sceptre. Apparently, all former orphans who spent time at the Happy Ending Orphanage get some kind of certificate when they get adopted and the seal stamped on it can reveal how far the institution is. Narbeth ripped the flattened cylinder of vibrant pink wax from the document a good amount of years ago, because he thought he could sell the expensive clay. As soon as he found out about the built-in GPS, he inserted the piece of wax into a compass from which he had pulled the needle out already. That, he didn't explain why. Anyways, the adventurous boy never let it out of his sight in case he needed to go back easily or without enchanted help.

" Looks like your weirdness paid off. " I comment, getting his quirky smile in return.

The train slowly comes to a stop, we get out. Narbeth leads us outside of the station we got off at and through the busy streets of whatever city we're in. After at least 20 minutes of walking and dodging the arms and bags of everyone taking the crowded sidewalks, we reach a massive golden gate, worthy of any royal palace from back home. Over it, the words "Χαρούμενο", "τέλος" and "ορφανοτροφείο" are spelled with golden wires, decorated with gold leaves to give them the appearance of vines. For some reason, the fact that this enormous and fancy gate is just squeezed in between two skyscrapers highly amuses me. In between the bars, I can catch a glimpse of a pretty steep hill and a brick pathway. On top of the large hill, the tall shadow of a building stands against the cloudless greyish-blue sky. Suddenly, the gates open up. My brother and I step backwards, but the two orphans immediately go in. We follow them, not without exchanging a puzzled look. The doors close with a soft metallic sound behind us and we start the ascension of the light-colored pathway.

" Seriously, how are these bricks so clean if everyone walks on them ? "

" They wash the pathway, Diamond... Obviously. " Winnie seems kind of tense, she switched from breaking into tears to acting coolly with me. Not the worst move, if I'm being honest.

" Also, it's not like loads of people come in... " starts telling me Narbeth.

" Or get out ? " asks Ice with an amused tone.

The fact that none of the two orphans replied makes me concerned, though. We finally arrive at the hill's peak. The orphanage is a really strange building. It has a different feel to it according to how and where I'm looking at it. When I stare at its oblong steel windows, it feels not only like a metaphorical, but literal, golden cage. Although, when I focus on the beige, cream and ivory rounded bricks constructing the walls, the purplish pink roofing or the bright blue columns, it feels very fairy tale appropriate. The insanely big walnut doors swing open and a tall slim lady comes out. She has short curly grey hair with streaks of shiny light green, wrinkled pinkish skin and sparkling  brown eyes. She oddly reminds me of an older version of my mother. She stands pretty straight for her age, not without the help of a ornate cane, and wears a long vintage-looking olive-colored dress.

" Winnie and Narbeth, I am absolutely delighted to see you two. How have you been, my dears ? " Her voice is surprisingly soft and friendly, contrasting with her strict appearance.

" Lady Fauna, I'm so glad to see you ! " exclaims Winnie, hugging her. Not gonna lie, that's kind of an intimate gesture towards an orphanage staff member, even if she did tell us she lived here her whole existence. Also, I would be scared to break her fragile skeleton-like body by embracing her too hard. Ice expresses what I was thinking, careless as always :

" Fauna as in the Fauna ?! "

" Of course young man, but you shouldn't speak of our roots so freely. Not everyone at the Happy Ending Orphanage is from The Enchanted Earth. "  That's how she calls The Other World, I guess. I didn't know the Three Good Fairies used telepathy, although it isn't shocking considering how powerful they are. Merlin's son tells the old fairy why they came, only according to our plan.

" His name is Ice and she's his twin sister, Diamond. Winnie wanted to retrieve something she forgot in her room, so I decided to swing by, see how everyone was... Also, can we access our files ? "

" It fills me with absolute happiness to see you haven't lost your wit, boy. Although, and you should already be aware, only staff members or current residents, in certain cases, may penetrate our Happy Ending Archives. " My brother stifles a laugh and I roll my eyes as his best friend also starts giggling under his breath. The blonde pinches them both in the ribs and, after stopping for a second, it causes them to uncontrollably burst out in laughter.

" Guys, c'mon... " I mutter, clearing my throat to block the nervous chuckle I can feel crawling up. The orphanage worker hits the brick surface of the ground with her cane two times and we understand to follow her inside the building. It's as intriguing as the outside. The walls are covered with wallpaper that changes color and pattern every minute, I suspect, according to my emotions. So, every guest must perceive it differently. It shouldn't work with non-psychics, logically. If it did, any Earthling who would happen to enter this place would have a heart attack when seeing the wallpaper morphing. It's currently dark orange with annoyingly uneven and irregular stripes of a lighter orange. The stripes become tiny turquoise birds, then pink shells... Fauna leaves us when we finally reach the orphan's dorm room. My twin insists on staying with her, so Narbeth and I head off on a quest for Winnie's files. " You remember where they are, right ? The Happy Ending Archives. " " Of course... Kinda. " " You better. " " I do remember where they are, okay ?! But if you keep pressuring me, I might forget. " We make it to an imposing wooden door with a golden doorway and handle. " It feels enchanted. I just know it's not a regular door, how do we get in ? " " We knock ? " " Wait, no, don't..! "  I could slap him. With a chainsaw. The door opens onto a small plump man dressed from head to toe in old fashioned light blue and magenta clothing. He takes off his top hat and his black eyes shimmer.

" Narbeth ! My stars, boy, you've gotten so big ! Not unlike myself, let us not lie. " He laughs in a good-hearted way and I can't quite figure who he reminds me of, but I've met someone very similar once.

" Lord Robert, don't you dare call yourself fat or I'll have to start buying you a plate of plain lettuce from the cafeteria every week, like I did then ! "

" You have surely been very much missed, my boy. In the many years I have worked here, no orphan ever spent their weekly allowance to buy me a plate of lettuce so often ! Now, who is this delightful young lady accompanying you ? "

" I don't know about delightful, sir, but let me introduce you to the one and only Diamond Winter Frost. She's my friend's sister. "

     " A Winter Frost, how exciting ! "

I hear the middle-aged man pronounce my last name and that's what it takes to hit me. He's related to the Fairy Godmother.
