CASEY wiped the sweat off his brow as he stepped back from the punching bag. The metal chain attached to the bag creaked as it swung back and forth, the sound irritating him. Looking down at his hands, Casey frowned at his bloody knuckles, the young shadowhunter realising that he hadn't even felt the pain.
Not bothering with a healing rune Casey made his way to the porthole at the edge of his room, scoffing at the view from it. He longed to leave this god forsaken prison. He had tried to map out every possible exit, until he realised that there were none. The entire boat was sealed with a lethal protection spell meaning that the Morgenstern twins were trapped.
It made Casey sick how much attention his father gave to him. He made him train with him, eat with him and he had even tried to have some type of heart to heart with Casey which resulted in the young boy breaking his fathers nose. But Valentine was even more stubborn than Casey, and he refused to give up on having some sort of father son relationship with him.
Casey spent most of his time glued to Jace's side, afraid that if they were apart for too long he would lose him and be completely alone. The few moments in between that he was not with Jace, Casey kept himself occupied with other activities - boxing for example. Anything to keep his mind off Alec.
The young shadowhunter's attention moved from the water below to the sounds that were reaching his ears. The sound of someone groaning in pain.
"Jace." As the name fell from Casey's lips he threw open his door and bounded down the corridors, following the sound of his brothers voice. He was led to the bottom deck, facing a metal door.
Now that he was closer he heard the sounds clearer. A series of what sounded like punches followed by rattling of chains and the groaning of his brother. Stepping back Casey unsheathed his seraph blade, the familiar glow warming his bloodied fingers. Running forward, Casey raised his foot and kicked the door hard, causing it to fall off its hinges, the ground shaking as the metal clanged against it.
Those within the room stopped and turned to face the eldest Morgenstern, even the strongest of the men feeling a sense of fear as they saw the fire burning in his eyes. The power this man was exhibiting was more than a normal shadowhunter could ever hope to have, and every person in that room had made him angry.
Fury burned through his veins as he saw Jace hanging from chains in the middle of the room, bloody and beaten. But he still raised his head and met his brother's eyes and he watched as the man nearest to Casey made the mistake of attempting to attack him. In one fluid movement, Casey drove his blade through the mans chest without no hesitation that it almost frightened Jace as he saw how nonchalantly he watched the body fall to the floor.
Two men stepped forward this time and as Casey kicked one in the chest, he slit the throat of the other. Wiping the blood of the two dead bodies onto the back of his jeans, Casey lunged at the man he had previously kicked and plunged his blade into his chest immediately, drawing his body count to three in under a minute.
Just as the others made their way to attack Casey a voice sliced through the room, footsteps following.
"Casey that's enough." Valentine shouted, placing his hand on his son's shoulder. Growling, Casey whirled round and placed his blade to his father's throat, the blood of the third man dripping down his neck now. Valentine's men stepped forward, but he merely raised a hand and the backed down.
"This is your doing." He hissed, resembling more of an animal than a person at that point.
"Casey, Jonathan needed to be taught a lesson." Valentine replied calmly, not at all intimidated by the blade that was pricking the skin of the base of his neck. "One that I may have to teach you if you do not remove that blade from my throat."
"I'd like to see you try." Casey snarled, curling his top lip as the ground below them began to shake. The remaining men looked around, slightly panicked as the struggled to keep their footing.
"My my Casey, you are a very talented young man. I've been simply dying to see this." Valentine cooed, that glutinous look consuming his eyes.
"I will slit your throat right now without even blinking if you don't release Jace right now." Casey replied, ignoring his father's words.
"Only if you say please." Valentine grinned and Casey snarled, pressing the blade further into his father's skin and Valentine knew not to push him any further. "Release him." He demanded, looking over Casey's shoulder to the men surrounding Jace.
They did as they were told and Casey removed the blade from his father's neck, sheathing the seraph blade once more.
"Casey you need to control yourself more." Valentine sighed as if he were scolding a child. He moved forward and placed his hand on Casey's shoulder. The young man quickly moved away from his grip, curling his top lip again. "Touch me again and you lose that hand." He threatened, turning away from him and running to the blonde haired shadowhunter in the middle.
Quickly he took Jace into his arms, using his stele to draw an iratze upon his skin, just above his hipbone. Jace looked up at his brother, placing his hand on her cheek.
"I love you." He whispered.
-
Casey stood with his brother on open deck, his hand intertwined with his. The two of them had just found out that Valentine had injected their mother with demon blood when she was pregnant meaning that they were shadowhunters with demon blood running through their veins. It explained Casey's abilities, but to think that demon blood was within him - it made him feel tainted, unclean.
"Jace, I'm frightened." Casey admitted, causing his brother to look at him, watching as he struggled with his words.
"Valentine won't hurt you Casey, I won't let him." His brother promised, tightening his grip on his hand. When Casey shook his head signalling that that was not what he was referring to, Jace assumed the cause of his fear was from somewhere else. "Casey we may have demon blood in us doesn't mean that we're evil." He told him and Casey laughed bitterly.
"You maybe, but me? Jace you saw me down there, I killed three men without any hesitation. And even now, I don't feel guilty. I don't care that I killed them, but I know I should."
"They were not good men Casey, you need to understand that." Jace reasoned, but Casey shook his head once more.
"That's not the point and you know it." Be replied sharply and Jace sighed.
"Then what is the point Casey?"
"The point is that there's darkness inside me Jace and it's growing, rotting my body from inside. Something has changed, and I'm scared of what I might become." Casey told his brother, tears stinging his eyes.
"Casey stop talking like that. You are the most kind hearted person I know. You saved me earlier Casey, someone evil wouldn't do that. None of this is your fault, it's Valentine's. What kind of father experiments on his own children with pure demon blood?"
"One with perspective." Valentine interupted, appearing behind them.
"Speak of the devil and the devil shall appear." Casey mumbled, but Valentine heard and arched an eyebrow as he tilted his head. "Now I'm hardly the devil Casey, do stop being dramatic." He retorted, rolling his eyes at his son.
"You're right. The devil has more self respect." Casey spat and Valentine sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"We all want the same thing." Valentine began, changing the subject. "- to rid this world of demons."
"The Clave fights demons." Jace drawled and Valentine leaned forward on the railings causing Jace to tighten the grip on his brother's hand even more, so much that he hissed quietly as he ripped open the scabs upon his knuckles making his wish he had been smart and used a healing rune.
"The Clave has gone soft. All downworlders will give into their violent tendencies one day. It's inevitable. Even a single drop of demon blood running through your veins makes you a threat to humanity." Valentine explained, and Casey clenched his jaw.
"We know plenty of downworlders who play by the rules." Jace argued, and Casey nodded.
"They can control their urges." Casey added. "Unlike you." He spat, referring to his father's constant need for power like it was the worlds strongest opium.
"Ah, you're thinking of Lucian Greymark?" Valentine questioned rhetorically. "Warlocks like Magnus Bane and even Clarissa's little vampire friend Simon? No matter how hard they try, downworlders cannot control their demonic blood forever."
"If that blood is so evil then why did you put it in me?" Jace demanded. "In Casey?"
"To fight fire with fire." Valentine smiled. "And clearly it's working." He added, his eyes drifting to Casey.
-
Casey tapped his fingers against his thigh as his father told a stort about a man who owned a pizza place. It sounded like the start of a bad joke. Of course that was until he got to the part about how Reggie's wife brutally slaughtered him after becoming a vampire.
"Your point?" Casey interupted, causing his father to look at both him and Jace.
"You really think love will keep you from hurting your family and friends? No matter how hard you try, demon blood will make you kill. Casey has already shown us that. " Valentine spoke, and Casey looked down in shame, not bothering to argue.
"It starts in small ways, urges." Valentine continued. "That's why you want Clary and you always will." He told Jace before momentarily turning his attention to Casey. "And that Lightwood boy I saw you with, what was his name? Alec?" He questioned and Casey snarled.
"Don't you dare say his name."
"See?" He laughed, pointing at his son. "You want to kill me right now don't you? You want to see my lifeless body lying at your feet."
"Don't tempt me." Casey hissed and before his father could reply, a scream came from within Reggie's, causing Jace to sprint into the building. Casey went to follow his brother when his father grabbed his wrist.
"Let your brother do this alone." Valentine advised and Casey furrowed his eyebrows.
"Are you stupid, I'm not letting him do this alone." Casey argued.
"You will, or I will send my men to slit the throat of that Lightwood boy and send you his remains in a bag, is that understood? " Valentine threatened and Casey nodded slowly, unable to risk the safety of his Alec.
But he also took a step closer to his father, his eyes narrowing as he spoke slowly and quietly, emphasising his words. "I'll do as you say for now because I have no choice, but one day - one day I promise you I will carve a smile at the base of your throat and decorate my walls with your blood."
"Careful Casey, we wouldn't want anyone seeing this side of you. The real side of you." Valentine grinned, but Casey's scowl did not falter. "Honestly of all the shadowhunter families you chose the Lightwoods." Valentine spat and Casey arched an eyebrow, almost resisting the urge to laugh.
His father didn't have a problem that he was dating a boy, no, his problem was the boy's last name. Honestly Casey was slightly surprised, his father was so pro pureblooded shadowhunters and was all about passing on the bloodline. Yet, he was aware Casey couldn't have biological children with Alec - of course they would in time have their own family and would have children one day, being a same sex couple didn't mean they couldn't have a family - and he didn't care. All he cared was that Alec was a Lightwood.
"Because our family is so much better." Casey snorted, rolling his eyes.
Moments later the window nearby smashed and out came a woman whom Casey assumed to be Reggie's former wife, Jace following. Her clothing and face were smeared with blood, her dark hair wild as she hissed at Jace.
"You're done." Jace announced as the woman bared her fangs.
"You can't kill me." Maria growled, but Jace raised the stake. "Watch me." He replied, lunging forward with the intent to kill. But as he did Maria threw her arms out and announced; "I surrender myself to the authority of the Clave."
Casey swore, aware that the law stated that Jace was no longer able to kill her as it broke the law. But as Maria laughed and taunted his brother Casey found himself preferring the idea of having Maria's lifeless body combusting rather than the idea of keeping the law of something that wanted him dead.
"You broke the accords." Jace panted, the stake still pressed against Maria's chest. "You killed innocent mundanes in there and you're going to die just like your friends."
"But unlike them, I'm no longer a threat." Maria taunted. "I know my rights. You won't break the accords, you're weak." Maria laughed.
Seeing that his brother truly didn't want to break the law, Casey stepped forward and held out his hand. "Give me the stake Jace and I'll kill her myself. If you don't want to you no one will force you too." He told his brother, but he shook his head.
"Jonathan, are you going to let her mock you like that?" Valentine questioned, gesturing to Maria and Casey held his right hand up.
"Shut up, I have this handled." Casey sang, irritated by the interuption.
"This thing in front of you she was once Reggie the pizza giys sweet and loving wife." Valentine continued, ignoring his sons words. This caused Maria to become angry, baring her fangs at the mention of her late husbands name.
"I told you to shut up, now look what you've done." Casey shouted. "For Godsake Jace, give me the stake." He didn't want Jace to cross this line, it was a point of no return but she knew that Valentine would not allow them to leave until one of them killed Maria.
But before Casey could take the stake, Maria lunged at his brother, leaving him with no choice but to kill her. As what remained of her body fluttered away in the wind, Casey finally took the wood from his brothers hand and let it fall to the ground, taking his face in his hands.
"Hey Jace it's okay." He told his brother who looked disgusted by what he had just done. "It's okay." He repeated, placing a kiss on his forehead.
"That's my boy." Valentine spoke triumphantly and Casey became angry once more.
"Shut the fuck up." He swore. "He didn't want to do that. You made him do it."
"I didn't make him do anything." Valentine shrugged. "He just embraced his true nature."
"I will kill you." Casey snarled and as the words fell from his mouth he heard the familiar sound of a bow string being pulled back. He knew that sound from when he used to watch Alec practise and he felt a faint pang in his chest as it hit him how much he missed him. But it was not his lovers eyes he met, but his mothers.
There his mother stood, pointing a bow and arrow at her own child. "Mum?" Casey said softly, but Jocelyn merely released the arrow from the bow in response. Casey knew the arrow was heading for his brother, and out of the corner of his eye he saw Valentine move to block it.
This worked well for his plan, and Casey knew it. If he took this arrow for Jace it reinforced the idea of Jocelyn being the bad cop and Valentine being the good cop. It would be an action he would use to get Jace on his side, and it was something that Casey couldn't let happen. So before his father could reach Jace, Casey pushed his brother to the side, gasping in pain as the arrow embedded itself in his shoulder, just above his heart.
Jocelyn had been aiming to kill Jace, there was no doubt about that. Casey fell to the ground, stunned by pain. But not the physical pain, that he could deal with. The excruciating pain was caused by his mother who didn't seem phased by just nearly killing her son and who instead reached down to load another arrow into the bow.
He stared at his mother with betrayed eyes as Jace and Valentine helped him to his feet, and ran to the portal. As he entered the portal, he couldn't get the image of his mother's face out of his head.
The image of a mother who wanted her children dead.
