Chapter 4
I slowly opened my eyes, coming to my senses once again. My face flushed a deep red, as I looked at Joshua's sleeping face. His ash-blond hair lightly fell into his eyes, as his mouth was parted slightly. His chest raised up and down in a steady heartbeat. His arms were wrapped around me, holding me in place, as my hands were placed onto his chest. With his v-cut shirt, I was pressing down onto his skin. He mumbled something in his sleep, which immediately caught my attention.
"... no.... don't...." I raised an eyebrow, wondering what he was dreaming about. I slightly wriggled and brought my hand up to his face as I brushed a strand of his hair behind his ear. He moved slightly and moved my body even closer to his if that was possible. I placed a hand on his cheek, which made my hand brush against another stray strand of hair. My eyes widened as I realized how soft it was. How had I not noticed this earlier?
I played with strands of his hair, lightly twirling it between my fingers. I turned my head and saw my phone sitting on the edge of the bed. I turned my body in an awkward position and reached behind me to grab it. Opening the camera, I snapped a quick photo before throwing my phone back behind me. I smiled, and continued to play with his hair.
He seemed so peaceful sleeping, compared to the smirk he always wore which gave him a flamboyant attitude. Lost in my thoughts, I didn't notice his violet eyes opening until his voice rang in the air.
"Hehe. Having fun dear~" My face heated up slightly, giving it a pink hue. But, I continued to run my fingers through his hair.
"It's so soft," I said. "Why didn't you ever let me do this before?" Joshua smirked and leaned into my face.
"You never asked. I would've let you do that all day long. It felt good." I brought my hand to my chest and noticed that our faces were barely touching noses.
"J-Joshua, could you please let go of me? I need to get up," I said. Joshua groaned and wrapped his arms tighter around me.
"No. You're just so comfy (Y/n)~ You're now my new teddy bear~ So warm too~" I blushed and squirmed to get out of his grasp.
"T-Teddy bear? What the hell is going through your mind?! Wait, I don't want to know, but what I want to know is what you were dreaming about." For the first time, Joshua stayed silent. "You were mumbling something in your sleep. You were saying 'no' and 'don't'. You do know that you can tell me right? It's not fair to make me tell you all my dreams but you don't tell me about any of yours."
"... You know, that was the first time I've slept in awhile. I don't get much sleep. Whenever I do, this happens."
"You're avoiding the question."
"Alright, fine. I was dreaming about you. Pretty much all of my dreams are nightmares. But I didn't know you were that concerned for me~ Maybe I should be like this more often~" Joshua said, looked at me with half-lidded eyes.
"Oh whatever you jerk! I can't help not caring about you. But you need to get more sleep. Sleep is important-"
"It's also the only thing you seem to do."
"-And you hardly get any of it. Where do you even sleep?"
"Nowhere. I don't sleep."
"Liar."
"Ouch. That hurts (Y/n)," Joshua said, pretending to grab at his chest. "But what hurts more is the fact that you took a picture of me and didn't tell me about it." He let go of me, and stretched, holding his arms far above his head.
"W-What do you mean? I would never do such a thing," I said. He showed me my phone, which had the picture pulled up on it. Wait--
"When the hell did you get my phone?!"
"Ugh. This is such an ugly picture of me. Say cheese~" Joshua said, ignoring me, and holding my phone out. I rolled my eyes before smiling anyway at the camera. I heard a click and he brought my phone to him, smiling to himself. "There~ Much better."
"I thought the picture I took of you was cute."
"You can't embarrass me like that. Besides, who's to say I don't have pictures of you which I think are cute." Joshua pulled out his phone.
"E-Eh?! Do you really?! Well, I look good regardless so even if you do, I must look good in them," I said, leaning over to him to see if he was looking at photos and he pulled his phone away from my eyes.
"Nope," he said, popping the 'p'. "You don't get to look unless you confess your undying love for me."
"Undying love? Are you confusing me with your mirror again? Because, I've already told you that talking to inanimate objects isn't healthy. Especially talking to yourself in the mirror," I said, scooting over towards him even more to see his phone. By now, he was lying down, holding my phone out of reach, while I was on top of him, reaching out to grab it.
"You sure you're not into me? Because this position is telling me a different story~" Joshua teased, jabbing at my side. I let out a small squeak. He bit his lip, trying to hold in his laughter.
"Are you ticklish?" he asked, already knowing the answer.
"No! I don't know what would've given you that idea," I said. I stopped reaching for his phone, and collapsed on top of him, knocking the air out of him slightly. I rolled to the side of him so I was still facing him, and placed my hand on his chest, as he sat up, bringing me with him. I held my hand out. "Are you going to give me my phone back?" He dropped it into my hand and I checked the pictures, to see a couple new ones, from a couple minutes ago. I still had the one of him sleeping.
Joshua mindlessly checked his phone as he had one arm around me and he poked my side, making me squirm.
"Stop that!"
"Just admit that you're ticklish." I was about to respond when there was a knock at the door.
"Come in," Joshua said. Does he forget the position we're in?! Mr. Hanekoma entered, and didn't even seem surprised at Joshua in here.
"I figured I'd find you in here. Planning on getting up soon?" Mr. Hanekoma asked. My face heated up at him seeing us like this.
"This guy," I pointed at Joshua, "Has problems."
"Clearly," Joshua said, still playing on his phone. I looked at Mr. Hanekoma.
"Did you need me for anything? Because I can get up finally. Someone didn't want me to," I said, eyeing Joshua. He looked at me with an innocent look.
"I have no idea what you could possibly be talking about. Besides," he leaned into my ear, not taking his eyes off of his phone. "You know you enjoyed it. But I'll meet you at 104 later."
I stood up, and grabbed some clothes from my closet, turning towards Mr. Hanekoma again. "I'll be down there in a minute. I just want to take a shower and freshen up. He nodded and looked at Joshua.
"I need to talk with you." Joshua got up without saying anything and closed the door behind him as the both of them left. Sighing, I turned towards my bathroom and stepped inside, locking the door behind me as it closed. Couldn't be too safe.
......
"Alright, so, what did you need?" I asked, coming down the stairs, into the cafe part of the building. I ran a hand though my wet hair to even it untangle it even more, even though I ran a brush and comb through it. Mr. Hanekoma wordlessly raised a pure white envelope into the air, flipping it so I could see the symbol on the back.
I groaned and walked up to him. Snatching the envelope out of his hand, I hopped up onto one of the stools. Crossing my legs, I peeled it open, and gingerly brought the letter out of its concealment. I read over it, and Mr. Hanekoma looked at me expectantly.
"Well? What does it say?"
"The higher ups wish to see me tomorrow with a completed report, which I haven't even started. I have all the required information, but why tomorrow? It's not due until a week," I complained, rubbing my temple, with a free hand.
"Definitely not normal. Not in all of my years, have they ever requested to see someone before their deadline. It must be something important," Mr. Hanekoma said, fixing himself a cup of coffee at a coffee machine.
"Oh, but that's not all. Apparently there's some kind of new position I'm supposed to be given. They didn't specify what it was though, so why is it so important?" I'm assigned as an Onlooker, otherwise known as an Observer. My job is to observe what happens with Reapers and Angels in the RG; Shibuya specifically. It is to remain a secret from any bystanders or humans, with the exception of other Angels and people like Joshua.
Mr. Hanekoma, has a similar case to mine.
"Interesting. Alright then, you should put that away." He motioned his head behind him as if someone was there and I concealed the envelope in my hands to keep anyone from seeing it, and dashed up the stairs to my room. I flipped the letter and envelope into the air, and flicked my wrist, and with a flash of white light, both papers disappeared from sight. Disintegrated into oblivion. I calmly walked downstairs, feigning a smile, to push away the feeling of uneasiness in my stomach.
An orange haired boy was standing in the doorway.
"Joshua here?"
"Nope, you just missed him actually," Mr. Hanekoma said, sipping from a cup of coffee. Steam rose out of miniature hole in the top of the plastic lid. "Want a cup of joe? It's-"
"Only 550 Yen, I know," Neku said impatiently. "I figured Joshua would know what happened."
"What do you mean?"
"I saw some reapers. The Support Reapers. You know, the ones that create walls and things like that. But I know for a fact that I'm not dead," Neku said, crossing his arms, deep in thought.
"... Well, that's interesting. You're tapping into the UG from the RG. Got any ideas (Y/n)?" Neku turned towards me, surprise crossing his features, as if he never noticed I was right there.
"Well, the only deduction I can make out of this, is that when playing his three weeks, your mind became accustomed to the UG, but when returning to the RG, your world, you still clung to the Reaper's Game. This might be causing you to see the UG, because you're so used to seeing it, along with the Composer's thoughts that flowed into your mind during your second week. His thoughts most likely contained small quantities of his power that was UG. Therefore, you can see the UG. It's interesting, seeing how much you despised it, but loved it at the same time. There's only a few people who can tap into the UG from the RG," I explained.
"Who?" Neku asked. Deep down, I had a feeling that he already has an idea.
"So many questions. But, the only person who sticks out, was the Conductor, Megumi Kitaniji. That's a trait that the Conductor has, if that answers your question. Now, Mr. Hanekoma, hate to cut the conversation short, but I have to go. About now." I bid them both goodbye and left the cafe, checking the streets for anyone with slick white hair. Seeing the coast was clear, I made my way to 104, much like the day I was trying to find Joshua. Reeling around the building, I saw an all too familiar ladder and began to ascend, reaching the top rather quickly. Joshua was sitting on the edge of the roof, dangling his feet off of the edge.
" Déjà vu huh?" I said, sitting on the edge next to him.
"Yep~ What did Neku want?"
"So you knew he was there?" I asked.
"Yeah, but I didn't feel like answering his questions, so I left it to you and Mr. H," Joshua shrugged.
"I think Neku's starting to possess the qualities of a Conductor. He can tap into the UG from the RG."
"He'd make a great Conductor. I'm not too fond of the current one. Megumi was probably my favorite."
"Are you saying..."
"Maybe~ I mean, I did have my eyes on him for awhile."
"Uh, OK. But, anyways, I got a letter from my higher ups." I explained to him what I discussed with Mr. Hanekoma. Joshua remained silent for a minute, before turning towards me, and enveloping me in a hug.
"Promise that you'll contact me as soon as you're done with the meeting. I need to know that my beloved is OK. I don't think I could live with the fact that something could happen to you. I'm crazy for you dearie~" Joshua purred, playing with the ends of my hair.
"Oh sure. I'll just be sure to call you immediately because there's such great reception up there. After all, how could I worry the one I love the most," I said in a teasing fashion as I pulled away and cupped his cheek. He leaned in so out noses were touching.
"Don't tempt me dear~" My heart was racing and I couldn't think straight so I blurted out the first thing that came to my mind.
"Your breath smells minty." Joshua's violet eyes looked into mine as he smirked.
"So does yours." Our lips were barely a millimeter apart when he pulled away, resting his head on top of mine.
"Y-You dummy...," I whispered soft enough so he wouldn't be able to hear. "Don't get my hopes up like that..."
"Hm. What was that?" Joshua asked, turning my head towards him. I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out.
"Because," Joshua continued. "I could've sworn it sounded something like you wanting me to kiss you. Don't tell me that you're purposefully teasing me so I would catch a hint."
"Don't tease me like you always do... I can't tell if you're being serious or not...," I whispered, looking at my folded hands in my lap. "You make it sound like a game..."
I received no reply but his hand cupped my cheek.
I had no time to react, when his soft lips met mine.
