Chapter 23
"Fall? You mean that they've decided to get involved with him? So this means he'll be marked as a Fallen, right?"
Solaris nodded, twirling the straw in her iced tea with her finger.
"Yeah, the Producer in Shinjuku actually mentioned it to the Archangels. The Producer there was saying that there was a spotting of Nikolai and that he was controlling the Taboo Noise in the area to attack nearby Reapers and even the Composer," Solaris said. I raised an eyebrow.
"The Composer of Shinjuku? What use would Nikolai have with him?" I asked, pondering the idea. If Nikolai was able to get a Composer on his side, then that would make it difficult for the Angels to get to him. But if he was wanting the power, then he'd have to spend most of his time in Shinjuku, which wasn't a city known for the greatest things.
"Who kno-" Solaris was cut off by the doorbell ringing. She excused herself and stood up, walking silently over to the door, which she gingerly opened. She spoke to the person before turning towards me. Beckoning me with her hand, I stood up and walked over to the door, and saw a messenger from the Archangels. He had the slick white uniform with golden pins and tags pinned to the front of his dress coat, and golden buttons, with a fancy design on them.
"You must be Miss (Y/n) (L/n), currently assigned a position in Shibuya, yes? Well, the Archangels would like to request that you give this letter to the Producer in Shibuya as soon as possible." The man handed me a white letter that was sealed with red wax. In fancy cursive writing on the front, was Mr. Hanekoma's name.
"Sure. I'll deliver this to him when I go back to Shibuya," I said, running my finger over the edge of the sealed envelope. I was curious as to what was inside but I wouldn't open it since it wasn't mine.
"Very well. I will alert the Archangels of your decision. Thank you for being considerate as to take this letter and give it to Sanae Hanekoma. I am aware that you two are close, even though he is a Fallen Angel. The Archangels didn't want to, but had to give him that title. Personally, I would've done the same thing as him if a Composer decided to destroy a city. I would do anything to keep it safe. Well, I must be going. Goodbye for now, Miss (Y/n), and Miss Solaris." The Angel left, disappearing in a bright light that caused him to vanish from sight.
"I didn't expect him to talk for that long about something off-topic. He usually just does whatever the Archangels say and keeps to himself most of the time," Solaris commented, staring at the spot where he was once standing. I nodded and thought. It's true that when Joshua made the decision to destroy Shibuya, Mr. Hanekoma had taught a Game Master, Sho Minamimoto, how to make Taboo Noise to try and stop the Composer in case he really did try to destroy it. On top of that, he unknowingly interfered with a Game, which he wasn't supposed to do. Most Angels thought what he did was brave to attempt something that would take away his Angel status, while others thought he was an idiot. Honestly, I would've done the same if I had the role as Producer.
"Yeah, well, I better go and deliver this otherwise the Archangels will get on my case about how I didn't bring it to him in the time that they wanted." Solaris laughed lightly at this and placed a hand on my shoulder. I smiled and carefully held the letter in my hands, not wanting to damage it in any way.
"I know the feeling, believe me," Solaris laughed. "But patch things up with Joshua, alright? I know that neither of you meant whatever you both said at each other." My smile faded slightly and the nod of my head was so faint, ghost-like. It was a silly fight and I started it by pushing at Joshua about his past...
"OK, I'll talk to you later then."
I left Solaris' house and walked down the street, past other Angel's who were walking with friends down the neighborhood. Focusing on my frequency, I mentally pushed away my wings and traveled through the planes, back into the RG and into WildKat, where Mr. Hanekoma had his back towards me, as he was working on a coffee machine.
"I thought you had gone into the Higher Plane," Mr. Hanekoma said, turning towards me. He wiped his hand on a rag.
"Yeah, and I learned some interesting information too. I was also asked to give you this letter." I held out the letter and Mr. Hanekoma grabbed it, peeling it open, and grabbing the piece of paper that was inside. Unfolding the letter he read through it.
"The Higher Plane is doing something about Nikolai?"
I nodded my head for what seemed like the third time that day. "Yeah, my friend Solaris told me about it. Apparently the Producer in Shinjuku saw Nikolai harming the Reapers in that area. He's nearby, and it's only a matter of time until Nikolai makes his way to Shibuya, so the Reaper here will have to be prepared. And have you seen Joshua? I need to talk to him," I said. I noticed that the room was starting to get dimmer with each minute that passed, as the sun was finally setting and it was getting late at night.
"Yep. He's upstairs. Heard you two got into a fight, although Josh didn't care to elaborate any further," Mr. Hanekoma said.
"We did and it's my fault in the first place. I asked about his past and it got a little out of hand." I left the front area of WildKat and up the stairs in the back to the apartment area above. Joshua was most likely in the spare room. I stopped in front of the room and raised my hand to knock, but then stopped myself right when my hand barely grazed the door. Maybe I should wait a day. He might be sleeping anyway, and I wouldn't want to wake him. My legs refused to move away from the door at first, as if pulled by some invisible force, and after a minute of standing there, not knowing the words I would speak when I saw him, I walked away. My shoes made light noises against the wood and I found myself inside my room, and I opened the drawer on my (f/c) dresser that had light designs across the edge of each drawer.
After pulling on suitable pajamas I climbed into my bed and stared at the ceiling above me. What would I say to Joshua? Sorry didn't seem good enough to me. After what seemed like years, my mind finally drifted off to sleep.
I awoke to loud thunder in the middle of the night which startled me out of my skin. The flash of the lighting lit up my entire room from my window as it faded, leaving me in complete darkness. My heart beat faster when the thunder crackled throughout the night and rang in my ears. I shakily took the covers off of my body and over to the window where rain was pouring hard outside as the drops of rain pattered against the window, but gradually grew louder.
I turned towards my doorway and fumbled with the doorknob. I hated the thunder and lightning. The lightning cast shadows across my room which played with my eyes and made me see things. But what really made me scared of the lightning was the fact that my parents were killed on a stormy day. It brought back those memories that I wished would never resurface for the rest of my days, but every storm always brought it back to that. My feet were silent against the hardwood floors and I made it to where Joshua was. A part of me didn't like how cliche this was feeling, but the rest just wanted to be distracted from the storm, no matter what the situation was.
My knees grew weak and I took in a deep breath and knocked on Joshua's door. There was only a few seconds before I heard Joshua speak just over the sound of the thunder that rang out again.
"Come in."
I opened the door, finding it unlocked and saw Joshua sitting on the bed in the room. His phone was opened and in his hands as the light from the screen illuminated his face. The flash of light appeared again through the window accompanied by the thunder which made me jump again. Joshua smirked.
"Don't tell me. Are you afraid of the thunder?" I bit my lip as I played with the hem of the shirt I was wearing. Looking off to the side, I nodded my head. "I had a feeling. Come here." I shuffled over to where Joshua was on the bed and he grabbed my wrist and pulled me onto the bed. I fell against him and I saw that his phone was lying down on the bed on the other side of him.
"Listen, Joshua. I just wanted to say sorry for trying to get into your business earlier. I know that it's not really my business to know and that you probably have a reason to not tell me or-" Joshua silenced me by placing a finger on my lips.
"Shh dear. You don't have to apologize. In fact, I probably should. But what's said and said is done." Another crackle of the thunder rang out in the air and I whimpered, burying my face into Joshua's side. He chuckled and placed his arms around me, pulling me close to him. I wrapped my own around him and squeezed my eyes shut at the clap of thunder that rang out again.
"It hasn't stormed in such a long time," I whispered.
"You know, I had a sister. We were twins, really," Joshua said. I opened my eyes and looked up at Joshua. Did he really trust me enough to tell me all of this? "She could see the Game just like I could. No body believed that we were seeing these things, of course, and people bullied us because of it. Some people just didn't know their personal boundaries, I guess. But one day, when we were both fifteen, we were cornered in an alleyway when we were on our way to see Mr. H. There were three of them. I tried to tell her to run while I could hold them off but she refused. The bullies there, or rather, the murderers, ended up killing me and then her. We were both in the Reaper's Game after that. Mr. H was absent for the entire week I was in the Game.
"But things went downhill after that. At the end of the week, we erased the Game Master and met the Conductor at that time. Only us two were remaining in the Game. The Conductor erased my sister right then and there, claiming that she didn't have enough points to pass. Driven by my own rage, I erased the Conductor without a partner which shouldn't have been possible. The previous Composer then came out offering that I could be his new Conductor. I refused and fought against him afterwards. I won the battle, obviously, and as soon as I became the new Composer, I thought I could bring back my sister..." Joshua went silent after that and his arms squeezed my body tighter. His eyes held so many emotions that I couldn't tell what he was feeling. Adjusting my body, I wrapped an arm around his torso and the other under his arm so that my hand was tangled in his hair.
"I'm so sorry Joshua. I've never had any siblings, so I don't know what you two felt with each other, but it's not right to erase someone for not having enough points to pass," I said. I never knew that Joshua had a sister, nevertheless a twin. The previous Composer had no right to erase her for him not deeming her good enough. But a small part of me was joyous that Joshua even shared this with me, a secret he's kept from who knows how many people.
"Well, I did change the rules for a reason. You can't bring someone back from being erased. Not when their imagination wasn't gathered in time," Joshua said. I noticed the skies were clearing up as just the light rain could be heard pattering against the window.
"It's stopped storming," I said. Joshua giggled.
"I had a feeling you would notice. I did a good job at distracting you, didn't I? I must say, I would make for a lovely actor."
"You said all of that to distract me?" I said, in disbelief that he would give up a secret just to get my mind off of the storm.
"Yep, and it worked, didn't it?"
