Chapter 15
There shouldn't be Taboo Noise and neither Shiki, nor Eri should be in the UG in the first place. I was an exception. The Taboo Noise symbols flew at me and Shiki at an abnormal speed and set us both into the Noise Plane. I didn't know how to fight them without a partner and Shiki was unable to form a pact, seeing how she wasn't dead (or at least close to death). I raised my arm, ready to strike whether I could damage them when it zigzagged across my vision. The black and white kangaroo Noise Spun around whipping its tail to fight. I jumped backwards, narrowly missing it as the red eyes followed my every movement. There was another Taboo Noise behind me which I failed to notice when it struck me in the back. I heard Shiki yell out from somewhere but I couldn't pinpoint her location. I did, however, focus on her imagination level as I stared at the Taboo Noise, trying to form some kind of connection with her.
Raising my hands, I allowed them to become enveloped in light as it shot out of my hands like bullets at the Taboo Noise. They cried out in response, and I was more confused than before. I didn't have any kind of pact... Unless that meant that Shiki was fighting them with me. But that shouldn't be possible. I couldn't have formed a pact and unless the connection I was using to reach her counted, I was at a loss.
"Shiki! How many Taboo are there?" I shouted, hoping she could hear from the Noise Plane she was on.
"Uh, there's six in all. A kangaroo, three frogs, a crow thing, and a fox." I looked around, examining the Taboo Noise around me. Sure enough, I had the same Taboo Noise that she did. The fox was floating above the ground and transformed into a kangaroo as it jumped high into the air. Meanwhile, the frogs all jumped from all angles at me, which I ducked and rolled away from to avoid getting hit. The crow swooped down towards me as I tried to stand up from my crouched position on the ground. Swiping my hand to the left, I allowed the light to pour out from all angles, knocking the crow out of the air. It screeched as it prepared another attack. The kangaroo that had previously jumped had swooped down, sending a shock wave across the ground around it. The ground beneath rippled as it cracked from the pressure. I cried out as it sent me backwards. With my tuned down frequency, I had no chance against them. Focusing on my frequency, I upped it and felt the change in my back as it compressed and clenched the muscles as my wings appeared, unfurling themselves in a grand fashion.
They flapped as I flew into the air, channeling the light around to bend around forming a massive ball of pure light. I raised my arms and flicked my hand as it zoomed towards the ground, exploding into a massive amount of burning light that damaged the Taboo Noise greatly. All of them but the kangaroos were stunned from it. It felt good to have all of my power back. The collar that was originally around my neck constricted my power, keeping me from using it, which was a strain on my body from the frequency of the Higher Plane, compared to the frequency my power was giving off then.
I flew back down to the ground, slowing down as I neared the ground, landing gracefully on it. One of the frogs disappeared from my view as it diminished into thin air. I raised my hands up to block my face as a barrier of light appeared between me and the kangaroo that jumped, ready to jump-kick me. The kangaroo hit the barrier and was sent back but the other one smashed down next to me, sliding me a couple of feet forward. As I slid forward, I failed to notice the crow that had swooped down and aimed for my wings. I screamed as it tore into one of them as the bone cracked. I spun around jumping slightly. The crow didn't budge and continued to claw at my wing which was already ripped and probably torn to shreds. I raised my hand over my shoulder, palm outstretched towards the crow as a beam of light (similar to Joshua's) was sent from my fingertips and hit the crow in a direct hit, sending it flying off of me. I reached behind me as I felt the wing, wincing at the immense pain it caused to brush my fingers over the once white feathers. I blinked away tears from the pain as my face was twisted into a grimace.
I slashed my hand at the crow which cawed out as its own wing broke. A wing for a wing...
The two remaining frogs leaped at me as the kangaroos both jumped in the air, ready to pound on the ground. The crow cawed again as it flapped its remaining wing against the pavement. A ball of light appeared at my fingertips as multiple rays of light shot out of it, knocking both frogs away from me. Unfortunately, this did nothing to stop the kangaroos which both hit the ground on both of my sides. The force caused my arms to burn from the impact as my head was pounding. The crow vanished like the frog once did and I could only assume Shiki had erased it as well. Two more Taboo Noise replaced them instantly and my wing throbbed. I downed my frequency, feeling my wings retract back into my body which hurt as my right wing became heavy and refused to respond when I wanted it to move. But I couldn't have any casualties or have my wings ripped off at this rate. My power will just have to be reduced with the lower frequency.
"They just keep coming!" Shiki shouted, panting slightly. The fight was taking a lot out of her.
"I know! But I don't know what else to do!" I responded. One of the kangaroos had changed back into the fox and blended in with the shadows as it moved quickly through them, aiming to bite my leg. I jumped up and raised my foot as I smashed the fox in the ground. I raised one hand, summoning light towards the Noise. It came to life around the area, speeding towards the Taboo Noise, striking them from all angles. They were all erased from the combined efforts of me and Shiki. But just as soon as those were defeated, more took their place.
"Where are they coming from?" I asked. Suddenly, large beams of light struck all of the Taboo Noise, temporarily defeating them, but allowing me and Shiki to return to the normal UG plane. Joshua was standing there with Neku, a lazy grin etched onto his face. Eri was still on the ground, unharmed thankfully. Shiki ran over to Eri's side and I looked at Joshua.
"Thanks for the help. Did you see the Reapers that were just here? One was a walking Taboo Noise sigil and the other looked like a Support Reaper; Red Hoodie. I suspect that he had to do with the Taboo in the first place, before Sho. Besides that, both of them managed to reverse the Reaper sigil that allows those in the UG to be seen in the RG. The ones placed on shops. But instead, those from the RG could enter the UG by walking out," I explained, to him. Joshua was typing away on his phone and hummed.
"Already taken care of. I'm not an idiot. But, regrettably, the walking sigil managed to get away. I managed to... apprehend the other one though." Joshua giggled as he motioned to the unconscious Reaper that was currently lying on the ground. "I'll have the other in no time though."
"Wait, then what about Eri?" Shiki asked.
"Eri wasn't conscious to witness the UG so she'll be fine," I responded quickly. My back ached, still feeling the effect of the broken wing. I rubbed my right shoulder with my hand as I tried to make the pain subside. Joshua raised an eyebrow as he pocketed his orange flip phone.
"Is something wrong?" I shook my head.
"I'll be fine for now. We need to get back into the... RG though," I breathed out. Joshua nodded slowly, not convinced before turning to Neku.
"I do hope to see you again Neku. It was fun having you over," Joshua winked. Neku groaned and helped Shiki hold Eri up. "Just walk through that door and you'll be in the RG. Simple, huh?" They both didn't respond, but Neku turned towards Joshua, wanting to say something but decided against it, turning his back towards him. He and Shiki took Eri through the door of the fast food place I was at earlier. Joshua turned towards me with my bag that had my clothes in it. "And you, (Y/n) are coming with me. I promise I'm not planning something." Joshua giggled again and I attempted a smile but grimaced as the pain returned in my back. I knelt down and Joshua came up to me and helped me up as I leaned on him for support.
"I just... need to get back to WildKat," I said. Joshua nodded before a sly smirk appeared on his face.
"What? Do you want some alone time with me? Or with him? Or with yourself?"
"How does your brain even come up with that? I swear there's something wrong with you." I shook my head as Joshua walked off towards WildKat. "What are you going to do with that Reaper?"
"Well, I have some other Reapers that are going to take care of him for now. Koki Kariya and Uzuki Yashiro. That girl will do anything that she's told I tell you. She's even more ecstatic that this came from the Composer himself," Joshua chuckled. He has his Reapers wrapped around his finger now doesn't he?
We finally appeared in WildKat and I tuned down our vibes to match that of the RG which took more effort than usual.
"Josh? (Y/n)? What happened? There was a large number of Taboo Noise all at once," Mr. Hanekoma said, looking concerned for the both of us.
"Blame the walking Taboo Noise sigil," I mumbled. "There's a Reaper walking around with a sigil on his body, making Taboo Noise pop up wherever he walks. But I have a question... How do you fix a broken wing? It hurts like hell and I can't stand it." I upped my frequency allowing my wings to appear. The right one, however, remained still as it hung limply from my back. The wing was dragged across the floor when I tried to walk, scraping it against the hard floor. Mr. Hanekoma's eyes widened at the sight of it as he set down whatever he was holding and rushed me upstairs with Joshua. They laid me down on my stomach on my bed, and I heard something be moved around from behind me. Mr. Hanekoma began to tend to my wing, first by popping it back into place. I bit into my pillow and I felt something grab my hand. I turned my head and saw Joshua grabbing it as he offered me a smile.
"Mind explaining how this happened?" Mr. Hanekoma asked.
"Taboo Noise," I said. "Shiki and I were dragged into the UG along with her friend Eri when two Reapers reversed the Reaper sigil, sign, or whatever it is that's on shops." I explained the rest of the story, while at the same time trying not to hit Mr. Hanekoma in the face with my other wing since it was moving like crazy. It took all of my strength to keep it from moving. After what felt like forever, my wing was fully wrapped and both of them were furled behind me as I finished the story.
"You're going to have to keep a higher frequency in order for your wing to heal," Mr. Hanekoma said. "If you lower it to make your wings vanish, the healing process will also halt." I nodded, having heard this information before in the Higher Plane.
"I know. It just sucks though. I can't do anything without risking being seen by people," I said, propping my head up on my arms as I looked at the two males in the room. Mr. Hanekoma ruffled my hair and I pulled away frowning at him before smiling, unable to be mad at him. "Stop that. You can't just mess up my hair like that. You know how long it takes to get ready in the morning?"
"Not that long. Stop exaggerating. I doubt you spend half the amount of time Josh does. I'll come back up here to check on you in about an hour or so. I've got an errand to run. Josh, I expect for you to take care of her in the meantime and then I want to talk with you when I get back," Mr. Hanekoma said, walking over to the door of my room.
Joshua smirked, his ash-blond hair falling into his face. "Yes Sir. She's in great hands, don't worry."
"Should I be worried?" I asked. Joshua giggled and that didn't seem like a good sign.
"Maybe, but I'll see you in a bit. Wish I could stay longer but I've got business to attend to." Mr. Hanekoma then left and it was just me and Joshua in the room. Joshua looked at me and wrapped his arms around my torso as he settled himself down on my bed. On my left wing thankfully, which still didn't like being laid on by him.
"You're not that careful are you?" he asked. I rolled my eyes, and saw that I couldn't move either of my wings, from the injury, and from him.
"Of course not. You know, because I love getting hurt all the time," I said sarcastically. Joshua closed his eyes and nuzzled my side, which caused my face to heat up.
"I kind of figured. But you don't have to worry about a single thing. I'll take good care of you."
