04: The First "Date"
"Do you drive?" I asked Lucy.
Lucy walked attached to the right side of my body, and she shook her head no. "Uncle Reid has a chauffeur pick me up and drop me off, but I texted him and let him know that I was going on a date with the hero that saved my life."
Oh right, Congressman Weston must have set it up to where Lucy and I were inseperable during the day, stupid jerkface. "Your uncle probably doesn't even know who I am."
"Ah, actually he said he had a run in with you a couple years back. He even remembers recommending you for West Point, but then you backed out of the military idea." She said as we walked to my car.
I rolled my eyes. She probably doesn't know her uncle is a bold-faced liar, I thought.
I opened the car door for Lucy and she got in, and then I shut the door. As I climbed in, I saw her mess with the GPS.
"Where'd you set it to?" I asked, conspicuously.
"Isn't it always polite to let the girl choose where the date sets place?" She responded, amusingly.
"Fair point, let's go." I cranked the car and put it in gear and sped off.
The city lights illuminated my windshield, and Lucy smiled as she watched me drive.
"Where do you live?" She asked me, and thus began our three-hundred question game.
"I live in the nicer part of the Bronx, in a high rise. You must live in a mansion or something, right?"
"Yes. Why did you choose to save me that night, when you could've let me die?" She mused.
"Well," I began, "you were in a tight spot, and I can't sit by and watch someone die or be hurt by anyone. There's too much apathy in the world today, and if I can't change it, or make it better, then what point is there to me being on this Earth?"
I looked over at her as the GPS lady chimed, "5 miles left." She acted strange, for she hinted at tears but didn't let them flow from her eyes.
"You know, you could have just left me-"
"Why would I have I done that?" I blurted out, and then caught my mouth with my left hand and then tamed the curves of the hill we were traveling up with my right hand.
Lucy finally let her tears flow. "I'm- I'm not a good person, Gideon. I've done things-"
"We all have." I dropped my hand from my mouth and then shifted hands on the wheel. I wiped a tear off her face with my right hand as the GPS Lady said, "1000 yards to go."
"Gideon.... I'm serious. I'm a bad person." Lucy began to weep and I pulled over and looked at her.
"Lucy, listen. Every person has done a couple bad things in their life. It's what we do to overcome them that matters the most. No matter what you may have done, today is a new day."
She grabbed my face with both of her hands. "Thank you so much, Gideon. Can we get on with the date now?"
I nodded, and she let go of me. I got us to the palace of a restaurant on the hill, and I let her out.
"What is this place?" I asked her.
"Well... this place is a legendary Italian restaurant, famous for it's pasta and spaghetti.
My mood heightened at the mention of the word spaghetti. "I love spaghetti, how did you know?"
"Uncle Reid told me you did, so I had the perfect place in mind. Plus, look up! You can see the stars!"
The night sky was filled with stars, their white, blue, and red hues all illuminating the courtyard that we were in. Lanterns hung from wires that stretched across the yards, making everything seem so... perfect.
Almost too perfect.
Lucy quickly took my arm and pulled me along side her. I had to quicken my pace to make everything seem normal, and people all around us looked at us and smiled.
"Ah, a young couple in love!" A couple shouted in unison.
"In a hurry, aren't we?" A man asked as we walked by him.
We reached the door, and I held it open for Lucy and she pulled me inside. She took a breath.
"I told Uncle Reid not to interfere, and he's already trying to rush things. Those people are his maids and butlers, and he probably paid them to act extra lovey dovey."
I sighed and noted that it probably wasn't the case and that she was just playing it off on her uncle, and moved on to go to a table.
She found a booth and then notioned for me to slide in, and I did. She slid in next to me.
"In France, it's more likely for a dating couple to sit next to each other than across from each other." She said, coolly.
"You know, we are on a date and you don't have to win my affection, right?" I mused.
Did I really just say that to another person who isn't Veronica?
"I-I wasn't trying to, but-"
I held up a finger and notioned for a waiter to come over to our table. "This is Senator Weston's niece, can't we get service like that?" At the word that, I snapped my fingers.
"Of course, signorina! What can this humble maggiordomo get for you?" He asked nervously.
"See, isn't that better, amigo?" I humored him.
"We'll take the Appassionati di spaghetti piatto, per favore. Make it snappy."
I heard the word the passion in it, and I felt nervous. The waiter ran off and then he came back with a huge spaghetti platter with two forks stuck in it.
She's gonna Lady and the Tramp me, isn't she? I sighed.
I picked up the fork and started eating the spaghetti, and I felt nervous. She eyed me eyes so blue that I could see the sea in them. I actually got lost in the vortex of her soul, and it was a beautiful hazel-blue color. She was peace, she was good, she was everything that my heart had needed.
The moment I realized that I was falling in love with her, our lips touched.
She smiled as we kissed, and I opened my eyes and backed away slowly.
Oh my God, I just betrayed Veronica! I thought in my mind, and felt a big streak of guilt.
"So... you and I, we just-"
"We... kissed." I breathed, and cupped my lips with my right hand.
She put her fork down after I said those words, and smiled.
"Well, I guess this date is over then." She said.
I dropped my jaw as she turned her back to me. "So, that's it? You're just gonna walk away after something this serious just happened?"
"Who said I was walking away? I want you to take me home now, Gideon. Our next date will be on Friday, okay?" She softly spoke.
"Waiter, check please?"
"All of your incurred funds have been paid for by Senator Weston himself. Please, enjoy the rest of your evening."
I walked out of the restaurant, flabbergasted. How could she take something so fragile and beautiful as a kiss and just... walk away. Veronica would have never-
Veronica. I betrayed Veronica with a kiss.
My phone chirped. "How's my future nephew doing?" Reid Weston teased.
"Why do you want to know-"
"Hush now, Judas. I will be arranging things for your date on Friday. After you drop Lucy off at her residence, I want to meet you at the bar on 49th Street. I have a couple of arrangements for you to take care of."
Calling me the name of Christ's betrayer made me horrendously cold.
"What do you want from me now, huh? You already tore my life apart once, by making me forget Veronica and telling me my life really has no meaning-"
"Silence," Weston hissed, "a king never reveals his moves to his pawns; they simply obey his orders. So be a good dog and obey. Meet me at 11 o' clock tonight, in the aforementioned bar. Okay?"
"Yes sir." I said through gritted teeth. Weston hung up, and I walked to my car and helped Lucy in.
