≈Twenty-one≈
I stared at the items in horror and pushed them aside. Never! The other girls were already dressed and waiting. I guess they had accepted their fate. We were supposed to look beautiful today as our buyers would be arriving to buy us. As if we were some commodity on sale. A lone tear escaped my eyes and fell down my cheek. I quickly wiped it.
"What! You're still not dressed! You annoying brat!" Lioness screeched and marched towards me in fury.
The others girls scurried away why I stood my ground. She's a female like me. Why should I let her intimidate me? Why should I be scared of her? She's only going to hit me. I've faced worse. She grabbed my hair and dragged me to the centre of the room. I held her hand trying to loosen her hold on my hair. Memories of Papa and Mama grabbing my hair flashed through me. The scenes replayed in my head all over again.
"I warned you to watch your attitude why you're here, brat!" Lioness backhanded my face and I fell to the dusty floor, "You're trying to act stubborn huh?"
Isn't it obvious that's what am doing? I thought to myself as I spat blood out of my mouth and glared at her with blinding hatred. I wish I could sink my nails into her stupid face but then I remembered I just finished biting my nails yesterday. I mentally face palmed myself.
"You're lucky today is sales day. I would have beaten shit out of you. I won't let you bring bad luck to me today. So you better put on those clothes and wipe that blood off your face. Johnson is coming to get you girls in ten minutes time," she stated.
I glared at her and she glared back.
"You all had better be on your best behaviours today. Especially you, brat!" she walked towards me, knelt down to my position and grabbed my face very hard, "One wrong move from any of you, that person will wish she wasn't born into this world. She will wish she hadn't met Lioness."
She pushed me and walked out of the room.
I looked around the room. Some of the girls gave me pity looks while others looked at me indifferently. I got up and started undressing. I ended up wearing a kind of transparent long skirt and a bra kind of thing for a shirt. I used my veil to cover my body.
"Girls! Let's start going. Move it! Don't waste my time," Johnson yells.
"Can someone tell him to shut up!" a girl walking close to me complained.
"My ears are bleeding," I told her and she smiled.
"Hi, my name is Rita. What's yours?" she inquired.
"Oma," I simply said.
We entered a neatly arranged hall with plastic chairs. We were made to stand in front of these chairs on a stage. We stood there for almost thirty minutes before men and women began to walk into the hall.
"Ladies and gentlemen please be seated. The sales will start now," Lady koko announced with a smile.
My hearts started to beat faster. Eyes were undressing me and staring at me hungrily. I drew my veil tighter around me. I felt naked in front of all these people.
"Firstly we have her," Lioness stated as she dragged a slim girl forward. She was probably fifteen or sixteen, "She's sixteen years old. Has a model's body and isn't lacking at her front or back."
"Fifty thousand," someone offered.
I turned to search for the man who said that only to see an old man of about late sixties. Eeeew! I scrunched my nose in disgust.
"Fifty thousand! Do I hear a sixty?"
"Sixty-five thousand!" another person offered.
I didn't look this time. I might see an old man who has hunchback.
"Sixty-five? Do I hear a seventy? Last price? Going..."
Silence.
"And sold for sixty-five thousand naira. Next is..."
And it went on and on. Each girl getting sold for a price. I felt sick. I felt disgusted. Rita was sold for eighty thousand naira. Ah!
When it got to my turn, I began to shake with great fear.
"And lastly, the best of them all. Very stunning. I don't need to say much, you can see for yourself," Lioness told them happily.
"Two hundred thousand,"one man offered.
"Two hundred and fifty thousand," another man offered.
"Look carefully at what you're trying to buy here. Not just some ordinary girl."
"Three hundred and fifty thousand," a woman offered.
"Three hundred and fifty thousand! Going... Going... Sold! Ladies and gentlemen that brings us to the end of today's sales. Thank you very much. Come back tomorrow for the final dealings," Lioness stated.
I can't believe this! Three hundred and fifty thousand! So that's just all am worth. I am finished. What's going to happen to me now. Oh! Ya Allah, please protect me from these evil people. Please.
We were moved back to our room and were to wait for further instructions. Little did I know my life was about to take another turn.
Few minutes later, Lady koko and Johnson came into the room carrying trays of bread and cups of tea. Or should I say coloured water. They placed it on the floor and began sharing it to us. They didn't leave until they made sure we finished our food for reasons known only to them. After they left, I started feeling weird. I felt dizzy and my stomach felt funny. I couldn't take it anymore as I fell on my mat. I felt very weak. I could not move my hands and legs. I glanced around seeing the other girls falling down.
