Chapter 4
Nobody would tell me what was going on, but I picked up on words and phrases. War. Death. Destruction. All brought on by a girl who turned into a wolf who turned into a leopard.
Aurora.
A large wolf, brown as sun-dried mud, squared his shoulders and turned to me. He was Eric, and a perfectly polite and reasonable wolf. But if he knew I was silver....
Alright wolfy. Defend against this! He barked. I blinked and he flew at me. I twisted and pushed his shoulders so he staggered, but he was too quick and jumped on me immediately. I yelped and tossed back my head to unbalance him. Eric snarled and lunged at me, kicking off a tree.
Now, I should probably say something on Domino's defence. We were all edgy about battle training with rogues. But Domino was the one in the most fear. Maybe because of his desire to protect us. Maybe because he had only three working legs. Whatever. His actions were the same.
The fact is, Eric slammed me into the ground, shovelled me onto his back and threw me. I leaped to my paws to train more, but heard a noise like a scream of fury. Eric's ears pricked and he turned his head just in time for Domino to knock and skid him.
I scrambled back as the two wolves, both with brown fur, started circling each other. This was no training exercise. Eric jumped and tore Domino's shoulder with his teeth. Domino reached up and slammed his head, drawing his claws down his face. Eric's face split like a banana being opened and he made a barking-growling sound.
The two wolves leaped at each other with snapping jaws and tearing claws. They disappeared in a cloud of dust. I screamed and Domino howled and Eric swore. A crowd gathered, the rest of my pack and the rest of the brown wolves.
The dust cleared and two boys emerged. One was Domino, his black shirt torn and his lip split. The other was a sandy haired person with a scar on his eye. He was hot, but not to me. In his hand was a large tuft of silver fur. His eyes burned with amazement as he looked at Domino.
The rest of us went human and formed a tightly packed clump of humans. the brown wolves fanned around us, their eyes glittering in the dark. I balled my hands into fists.
Well, well, well. Look who it was all this time. the leader, Reece, spat. Juniper if I'm not mistaken.
I snarled back, but it wasn't as effectual with a human mouth. Reece flicked one ear and the wolves lunged. I reached out and punched the nearest one in the face, and then we ran for it.
Trees whipped our faces and cut our bare feet. Wolf howls echoed behind us, getting louder and more blood thirsty. I kept running, all the way to the edge of Eagle Point. The sheer drop to the roaring ocean made me dizzy, but it looked as if I had no choice.
"Alistair, Starling, Max, Belle, Bliss, Kim, jump!" I shrieked. They leaped off the cliff hand in hand. Their screams were barely audible above the roar of the waves.
Domino wiped blood from his eyes and took my hand. We stood at the very edge, facing the tree line as brown wolves melted out of the shadows. The cool salty breeze whipped my hair around my face, and the moon came out from behind a cloud. With the shivering light on our pale eyes, we leaped of the cliff.
The brown wolves howled with frustration as we fell through the open air. Wind lifted my shirt, my hair, my arms. I closed my eyes, enjoying the peace.
Then we hit the towering, dark waves and spiralled down into the depths of the sea.
