45 - Perfect

True to Kasper's promise, they both worked on the flight home. He looked over at her looking intently at her screen. She looked up and smiled. "What?"

"You're beautiful in the glow of the laptop."

"Stop!" She giggled.

"I was thinking about the flight back after I left the show. You tried to ignore me, but..."

"Because I felt things I shouldn't."

"You definitely should have, but I looked over the numbers and found the discrepancy. Everything changed. I viewed it as a challenge. I never thought I would love to work."

"You love when I sneak into your office."

He smiled. "Baxter doesn't." He frowned.

"Baxter is happy for us."

Kasper shook his head. "I was thinking of something else."

"What?"

She was his wife. He trusted her. They made vows and both Ivy and Gray knew. "I found out something about my father..."

She listened and when he finished asked, "How do you feel about it?"

"Confused. I feel bad for my mother, but then again, I feared you would never love me. Are you shocked?"

She shook her head. "I've been around your family a long time. Mac was secretive, and it pissed me off, so I was suspicious. I suspected something after Eleanor moved up to the twentieth floor. Living at your house, I noticed your parents aren't a normal couple."

"I'm glad we both know. Were your parents loving before your mother died?"

Dani put her laptop aside and stood. She paced in a circle. He jumped up to hold her. "Sweetheart, I didn't mean to upset you."

"It's not that. I lied to you." He felt like she kicked him. "I should have told you the truth. In my defense, we weren't really friends back then."

"What are you trying to tell me?" His heart went thud.

She bit her lip and let out a long breath. "My mother's not dead. At least, not that I know about. She left us. Just gave up being a wife and a mother and took off."

"Sweetheart, that must have been so hard." No wonder she found Beau.

"It was. I wondered what I did wrong, but the older I get I understand that it was her. She quit."

"No wonder you hated me when you thought I was a quitter."

"I never hated you." She smiled. "I just wanted too."

He kissed her, and she molded into him. "Have we worked enough? We could lie down."

She giggled. "We've done that before. You know Baxter took Ivy on a date to NYC to see a Broadway show."

"Why are you thinking about that when I'm thinking of undressing you?"

"I'm pretty sure they had sex on this plane too."

Kasper laughed. "I'm pretty sure everyone has, except my parents and Tate, only because Jimmy has his own plane. If you want a date in the Big Apple, I can arrange it."

"Do you mean Sue Ellen?"

He shook his head. "Unlike my brother. I am very capable." He quieted her response with his lips.

Percy met them at the door. Kasper looked around. "Is anyone home?"

"Your parents are in the parlor. Would you like to join them in the dining room or would you like a tray?"

Kasper looked at Dani. She smiled. "A tray would be nice. We're both tired."

They had taken over Doyle's old room to create a sitting room. Aside from the TV and comfortable sofa, they had a table. The newlyweds preferred eating alone - no formal dress required.

Kasper nodded. "I'll go say hello."

Dani took his hand and walked with him. Philip looked up first. "How was your trip?"

"It was good."

Amelia held up her phone. "You are trending. It's nice to have you settled. No more drama for the Kane family."

Kasper looked at his father who winked. Dani laughed. "Not everyone is happy."

Amelia said, "Silly girls and their crushes. You always had a good head on your shoulder. Not having a crush paid off." Dani smiled, but didn't correct her mother-in-law.

Kasper coughed trying to stifle his laugh. Philip smiled. "Amelia, she had a crush. That's why she kissed him, but it worked out."

"Yes, and next we'll have more Kane babies."

Kasper shook his head. "Talk to Ivy, maybe she'll give you two again. We aren't having children."

"Why not?"

"Because we don't want them." Kasper smiled at Dani. "We're going to retire."

As they climbed the stairs, she said, "Thanks for covering for me."

"It was our decision. I made my decision that week with the twins."

They stepped into their room. "I think I'll have a bath."

Kasper smiled. "Should I call Pauline or would you like me to help?"

"I'm perfectly capable, but if you want to join me."

"I thought you would never ask."

His life was perfect, just the way it was.

This is the end of the Cross Series. We will see glimpses of Kanes, Sinclairs, and Hoffman at future charity events. The next series is set in Boston, mostly.

Thanks to everyone who read, voted and commented. Bringing you Jimmy and Gray's stories brought me a lot of joy ❤️
