11 - Here

Kasper sat on a chair across from his twin. Meanwhile Gray sat on the end of the sofa where Doyle was reclining. Every two minutes, he asked if she needed anything. She rolled her eyes, tired of him doting on her. Each time she sighed, he wanted to make her more comfortable. She had a month to go but had been told to rest. No one expected her to make it to forty weeks. Tate, who was a day overdue, looked smaller than Doyle.

"Baxter will be away when he's born. I can't believe Ivy is leaving the boys."

Kasper nodded. "I can't believe Baxter is. He leaves work early to play with them."

"It's good they need some couple time. I'm surprised Mother survived us."

Gray laughed. "I can't believe they are going on that Trista Montgomery trip."

Doyle laughed. "It is so Baxter."

Kasper nodded. "I'm surprised your friend isn't going too."

Gray laughed. "Monty? No, he would hate it. We've seen that part of the world."

"Sofia wants to be around to help me, so they aren't traveling. Plus the girls keep them busy."

"If Tate doesn't have the baby before Baxter leaves, I'll be the only Kane sib to visit her at the hospital."

"Mother will go and Elena. I bet Dani will too."

When he heard her name, Kasper felt a surge of something unidentified. "She and I are holding down the fort for Bax."

"You haven't quit yet?" Doyle laughed as she emphasized the 'yet'.

He sighed as he shook his head. "You sound like Dani. What happened to being on my side?"

"I am, but we're both not irresponsible kids anymore. I matured the hard way, but you can do it gracefully."

Gray stood. "I'll go work since Kasper is keeping you company."

Kasper watched as he leaned over and kissed her forehead. Doyle was lucky that Gray fell for her too.

"Kasp, I just mean it's nice to be settled. Let's face it, our being settled is a dream for others. We're not working all day and then coming home to scrub toilets and pay bills on limited funds. So you work, but you can take vacations and socialize. It's not all bad, especially if you find someone to share it with."

He could tell her about the cross, but he wanted to keep it a secret. "Your argument is flawed because you'll be changing diapers."

"Yeah, but Gray will too. He's the expert." She whispered, "It's just the two of us here. What happened with the show?"

He shrugged. "I told you she was dumb. Don't lay into me and accuse me of being a misogynist. No lie, she couldn't understand why the beach was smaller."

Doyle laughed so hard she wiped her eyes. "Amelia would eat her up and spit her out."

"Yeah, no magic would ever make me love her, so I lost interest and kept to myself to let myself lose. Hopefully, they won't edit out her ignorance about the tide. I went on a lot of shows and only won once. I don't want to be known as the loser, so I'm done."

"See, you've grown up."

"I know. I just... Do you think it's weird how Dani is so proud of the Kanes? She makes me feel unworthy of the name."

Doyle shrugged. "Even before the whole Gray thing, which is weird, she never approved of my lifestyle. I mean she's Baxter's right hand so he rubbed off on her"

"Jimmy wanted to save you. I worried about you, but thanks to you I haven't smoked weed in forever."

"Thanks to Gray. He saved me."

"You never listened to Bax when he asked."

"The cross helped. Love was enough to quit." Maybe he loved Dani enough to go to work every day. "Don't worry about Dani, she only cares about Baxter and Mother. The rest of us are extras."

"Not Tate."

Doyle shrugged. "Tate is too busy with Jimmy to go to lunch and have manicures with Dani."

"Any day now, she'll be even busier."

Doyle's smile morphed into a frown. "I'm a little scared."

"Doy, you can handle pain. You'll be a star."

"But I'll be responsible for a life."

"Just love him. Look at Baxter. Five years ago, I would have bet against him being a father. You'll be great. Plus, you have Gray. You're in it together."

"Bax is pretty great. Ivy changed him. The right woman can change you."

"I like myself. Thank you."

Doyle giggled. "Change can be good. Baxter pulled the stick from his ass. I cleaned up and Jimmy settled down."

"What about Tate?"

"She's always been perfect, but she made a better choice with Jimmy."

"True enough. I should go since I'm a working man." He stood. "Don't get up. Take care of yourself and my nephew." He leaned over and kissed her cheek.

"Don't tell Gray you're leaving. I love him, but he hovers. I need to relax."

Kasper laughed. His twin had changed the most.

The following afternoon Kasper and Dani sat listening to Baxter as he droned on about their responsibilities during his vacation. To his right, Dani typed notes on her laptop, but Kasper remembered every detail. When he shifted in his seat, Baxter stopped talking.

"Am I boring you?"

"A tad. Seriously Bax, you've been talking for an hour. The company won't fall apart without you for a week. Dad will be around and Dani is competent."

"It's ten days, not a week."

"Fine. Five work days."

"Six." Dani smirked.

"Okay, six. We can handle it."

"I trust you, but a few more things."

Baxter's phone rang while he talked about the large construction project in Manhattan. Dani reached over and picked it up. "Baxter Kane's office. Hold, please."

She held out the receiver. "It's Jimmy."

Baxter grabbed the phone. "Really! I told you. Absolutely amazing. Congrats, Daddy!"

He looked at Kasper. "She's here. Martha Grace Sinclair. He wants to call her Mattie."

"Like his...? Wow! How's Tate?"

"He said amazing."

Dani stood. "Well congrats, Uncle Baxter. Should I order flowers?"

Baxter paused for a moment. "Ivy has already bought some gifts."

"I meant from the company."

Kasper shook his head. "No. Kane is her family. It's not like she's a regular employee. If legal wants to send flowers they can. Should we call down with the news?"

Baxter shook his head. "They may know. I'll call Eleanor myself."

Kasper narrowed his gaze, but shrugged, as Baxter lifted the receiver and said, "Meeting adjourned."

Kasper was just outside the office when his phone rang. Expecting it to be Jimmy, he frowned. Had Gray heard?

"We're going to the hospital. The doctor's concerned about something. I'm not sure."

"Tate had her baby. I'm coming. I need to be there for Doyle."

He heard Gray's faint voice. "He's coming."

Even though she had a husband, his twin needed him. He turned around and burst into Baxter's office. "Gray called Doyle's going to the hospital. I'm going."

She was not due for another four weeks. Martha, Mattie was a few days overdue. Would Doyle and her baby be okay?

Since it was after five, Mac was waiting in the garage. Baxter would have to wait for his ride. "Take me to Brigham and Womens."

"Ms. Tate?"

"Yes. No. Doyle. I'm not sure what's happening. Tate had her girl."

Mac nodded without response. The ride took forever, but neither spoke. He kept looking at his phone hoping to learn more. Mac hardly stopped the car, and he jumped out. He texted Gray asking where he was. He responded with the floor number. She's going to surgery.

Kasper found a waiting area. He wanted to be with his twin, but Gray was with her. After about ten minutes of pacing, Monty rushed in. He looked at Kasper. "Anything?"

He shook his head. After a moment, he said, "Tate had her baby today."

Monty nodded. "We need more good news."

Kasper sighed. "I would know. I knew she wasn't dead before."

Monty's face fell. "No one is dying. She's at the best maternity hospital in Boston."

Kasper believed him. He had to, but the lack of information caused angst and doubt.

Thirty minutes later, Gray stepped out looking pale. "He's okay. They said he was. She is too. It happened fast."

Monty stepped forward. "What happened?"

"We went for a check and they said the placenta wasn't functioning and with his size, they wanted him out."

"But he's early." Kasper felt a fist around his heart.

Gray nodded. "He cried. He's beautiful. I need to go back to recovery."

After he left, Kasper looked at Monty. "I'll feel better when I know he's okay. Gray didn't convince me."

"He's a father. He'll be worried for the next eighteen years, longer."

"I want to see Doyle."

Monty nodded. "Have you realized the babies share the same birthday?"

Kasper smiled slightly. "No one expected that."

As he and Monty sat quietly, Kasper stared at his phone while Monty tapped on his. The elevator opened and Kasper's heavy heart lightened when Dani stepped out.

"Baxter went to see Tate. I thought I would stop by to check on things."

"Baby's here early. We haven't seen Gray in a while."

She nodded. "Do you want to go see Tate?"

He shook his head. "She'll understand. I want to stay close to Doyle."

"Okay. Let us know."

When Gray appeared again, he had color in his face. "She's fine, and the baby checked out okay. He's breathing like a champ. They said he's bigger than a newborn."

"What's his name?"

"Becker Kane-Hoffman. Beck."

"No middle name?" Monty asked.

"We aren't sure. You know Jews don't name after living people."

"Who is he named after?"

Gray looked at Monty. "A, um, old friend."

Monty added, "From the Marines."

"Beck and Mattie. They aren't twins, but they share a birthday. Can I see her?"

Kasper and Monty followed Gray into the recovery area. Doyle looked small in the bed. "Hey, mama."

"Hey uncle."

He kissed her forehead and looked her in the eye. "Are you okay?"

She nodded, but a tear leaked out. "Yeah. Just a little shocked."

"But he's fine."

She nodded as the tears rained down. Gray leapt to her side. "I'm fine. It's just. I don't know."

A woman in scrubs said, "It's just the hormones, sweetie. It happens. We'll move you to a private room and baby can join you."

Kasper said, "Maybe you'll be near Tate. You know, right?"

"Tate?" Doyle hadn't heard.

Kasper nodded. "Martha Grace. Mattie."

"Oh. That's sweet. Jimmy is sentimental. Two cousins. The same day. Not like twins."

Kasper shook his head. "Nothing's like twins." He breathed fully for the first time. Doyle and Beck were okay. "Does Mother know?"

Doyle's eyes widened. "Gray, we need to call her."

"She might be here."

Gray looked pale again. Monty patted him on his back.

Two babies!⭐️⭐️
