Chapter 9

It's strange, returning to Avengers Tower after that fight. When they were here just hours ago, they were here as enemies, temporary allies only because their goals aligned. Now they're more than that. They're friends. They're Avengers themselves. Wanda's not quite sure what to make of that.

"Don't get too used to the place," Tony tells them as they head back inside. "We're moving upstate pretty soon. Cleared out a whole warehouse for us."

"I still don't get why we have to move," Clint mutters.

"What do you care?" Tony asks. "You've been shacking up with your wife this whole time."

"I really don't think it counts as 'shacking up' if it's your wife," Bruce remarks.

"Oh, you know what I mean."

While they discuss that – not that it needs to be discussed, but anything's better than the silence that followed them throughout their return trip to the tower – Wanda stays quiet, her attention more focused on Loki than anyone else. Pietro insists that he was using some godly powers while she wasn't around, but she has a bit of a hard time believing it. He just doesn't seem capable of it. He's still curled up in his wheelchair, holding onto the handles as Pietro wheels him through the halls. She's always known that he was more than he looks, but she can't imagine him being that much more.

Thor's mind seems to be in the same place, because he spends more time looking at Loki than he does paying attention to the conversation. Eventually, he looks over at Wanda and Pietro and says, quietly enough not to disrupt the others, "I was sent to Earth in part to bring Loki home, but I don't know that he'll survive the trip."

"Good," Pietro says bluntly. "He does not want to go."

Though they were doubtlessly meant to be hurtful words, Thor just nods, accepting it without argument. "I understand that. But he is still Asgardian. He is still my family."

"That means nothing to him," Pietro says.

"You may be correct," Thor admits. "Loki and I have had a long and complicated history. We've never been on worse terms than we were the last time we saw each other, and I fear that it may be too late to change that. But his home and his people are in Asgard. At the very least, he may still want to see our parents."

Wanda and Pietro share a look. He might have a point. They don't know what's going on with Loki and Asgard. Nobody ever really told them, and they don't want to ask. After Steve tried to convince them that Loki wanted to take over the world, they've pretty much decided not to trust a word anyone says about him. But Loki wanting to see his parents? That's not very far-fetched.

"We are his family, too," Pietro says. "We were his family when he needed one most. You have no right to take him from us."

"Unless he chooses to go with you," Wanda adds. "We have no right to keep him from you, just as you have no right to keep him from us. This is no competition. Loki's happiness should be our first priority."

They all look down at Loki, who stares at Thor with wide, fearful eyes. He's yet to even acknowledge that they're talking about him. But he has to know. He has to be listening. She never tried to force a reaction from him, but at least this time, she'd like him to do something. This is all up to him now — and though it's not a competition, she really hopes he chooses them.

"I do not know that I trust Loki on the Bifrost," Thor says. "I would rather try to bring my father here—"

"Woah, wait, hold on," Steve says quickly. Apparently their conversation wasn't as private as it seemed. "You're going to bring the king of Asgard here?"

"What?" Tony whips his head to look at them. "You're going to what?"

"I am going to try," Thor says, "but I cannot remember the last time my father left Asgard. He may not want to."

"If he will not come to see his son," Wanda says, "then perhaps he does not deserve Loki as a son."

"On that, we agree, if only because I fear for my brother's safety," Thor says. "I will not take Loki on the Bifrost until I've received both my father's and my brother's approval and assurance that he will be unharmed. If my father chooses not to come, then Loki will stay with you. I would trust you to take care of him more than I would trust nearly anyone else."

Wanda gives him a small smile. He's earned a bit of respect from her for that. She'd been worried he wouldn't want to give Loki up.

"Right, okay," Tony says, "but you guys are gonna clean him up first, right? He looks like he hasn't touched water since we sent him away."

Thor hesitates. "That would probably be a good idea."

"Do you have a rag?" Pietro asks. "We clean him with a rag and some tap water."

"He's gonna need a lot more than a sponge bath," Tony says.

"What about those shower chairs?" Clint asks. "Those big..." He gestures vaguely. "The chairs with the holes in them. So he can sit in the shower."

Tony stares at him blankly. "Literally what are you talking about?"

"Shower chairs," Steve repeats. "You've never seen a shower chair?"

"Uh, no, because I take my showers standing up like a normal person," Tony says. "And I'm pretty sure you do, too, 'cause I've never seen a holey chair lying around, so how do you guys know about these?"

Clint shrugs sheepishly. "Laura's mom has one."

"And so does Peggy," Steve adds.

"Not everybody can stand up all day, every day," Natasha says patronizingly.

Tony puts his hands up in a sarcastic surrender. "Fine, fine, whatever. Where do we find a shower chair?"

There's an awkward pause, a moment of uncertainty between them all, until finally, Bruce says, "You can find pretty much anything at Walmart."

The Avengers nod, murmuring their agreement. Wanda's not actually sure what Walmart is, but if it has what they need, she's happy.

"Who wants to take a trip to Walmart?" Tony asks. "I'm only asking because I'm not doing it."

Steve rolls his eyes. "I can do it."

"Okay, then go. Shoo." Tony gestures for him to leave. "The guy's probably been sitting in his own filth for the last three years. He needs his shower chair."

"I think he can survive another few minutes," Steve mutters. "Alright, apparently I'm heading to Walmart. Anyone else need anything while I'm out?" His gaze scans the room, and Wanda's surprised to see that he even makes eye contact with her and Pietro. She hadn't realized they were included in this. Maybe she'd take him up on it if she knew anything about Walmart.

"No, not really," Natasha says, "but I'll go with you if you buy me a chocolate bar."

Steve cracks a smile. "Deal."

Once Steve and Natasha leave, it gets quiet. They end up meeting in what Wanda has to assume is the living room, though it's a lot fancier than any living room she's even been in. There's nothing specific that seems overly fancy; it's just the vibe, the feeling of the room. It might even just be the knowledge that this room alone is likely worth more than her childhood home was. She's kind of afraid to touch anything.

Pietro, meanwhile, is not afraid to touch anything, and as soon as he has Loki parked and content, he flops onto the couch, clearly enjoying every moment of it.

"Oh, yeah, make yourself at home," Tony says sarcastically, rolling his eyes.

"I will," Pietro says with a shit-eating grin that earns another eye roll.

Bruce clears his throat uncomfortably, grabbing everyone's attention. "So, what are we doing about the Mind Stone?"

Everyone's gaze switches over to Vision now. He's been awkwardly trailing behind everyone since they arrived, silent but attentive. This must be strange for him. He doesn't really know anybody — or, at least, nobody really knows him. She makes a mental note to try to change that. She's sure he could use the friend.

Vision's attention shifts to Thor, so everyone else looks at him, too, waiting for his answer. Why this is Thor's decision to make, Wanda's not sure she understands, but if that's the general consensus, so be it.

"Nothing," Thor says. "I trust that the Stone will be safe with the Vision."

"But are you sure?" Clint asks. "'Cause we already tracked that down once and it took over a year. I don't want to do that again."

"I am," Thor says. "If he can wield Mjolnir, he can keep the Mind Stone."

Loki's head snaps over to look at his brother, his eyes growing wide.

Thor looks at him curiously. "Loki?"

Loki's gaze falls to Mjolnir, hanging from Thor's wrist.

"What is it?" Thor asks.

Wanda comes in front of Loki and kneels down so he can see her. "Yes, the Vision used Thor's hammer."

Loki looks at Vision, his expression unreadable even to Wanda, who feels as though she knows him better than she does herself. Vision looks back at him, looking a bit confused, but he doesn't say anything.

"I think he's jealous," Clint says, half-joking.

"You and me both, buddy," Tony says.

Thor chuckles, wrapping his hand around the base of his hammer absentmindedly.

"Hey, who's hungry?" Tony asks. "Anyone else hungry? I'm hungry."

"I could eat," Clint agrees.

"Pizza?" Thor suggests.

"That's exactly what I was thinking," Tony tells him. "Everyone like pizza? You like pizza?" He looks at Wanda and Pietro, then at Loki. "Does he eat pizza?"

"I do not know," Wanda admits.

"Probably," Pietro adds. "Everybody likes pizza."

"You make a good point," Tony agrees. "Alright, I'm ordering pizza. I think we've earned a pizza party."
