Chapter 6

Wanda and Pietro do find the Avengers, and just in time. They're in the midst of a fight with Ultron, and his robots are everywhere. Everyone else seems to have a set part of their plan, but Steve Rogers's goal seems to just be punching things. He's welcome to do whatever he wants, of course, but it seems to be a losing battle.

Wanda and Pietro show up in the midst of their fight, and she's fairly confident in saying that they single-handedly ended it. Pietro runs around the street, pulling everyone out of the way as their runaway train barrels through the street, and Wanda nearly runs her power reserve dry bringing the train to a stop.

As soon as the train reaches a standstill, Wanda runs out to find Pietro. He's standing not far from the door, doubled over out of exhaustion and panting loudly. She rubs up to him and wraps her arms around him, her eyes lit with worry. He never gets like this. She's not sure he ever has.

"I'm fine," he assures her before she has the chance to ask. "I just need to take a minute."

"I'm very tempted not to give you one."

Wanda and Pietro look behind them just as Steve approaches. Wanda barely registers her hatred of the man and everything he stands for; her priorities lie elsewhere.

"The cradle," Wanda says quickly. "Do you have it?"

"Stark will take care of it."

Wanda's eyes go wide. "No, he won't."

"You don't know what you're talking about," Steve says. "Stark's not crazy."

Wanda shakes her head. That's not what she's afraid of. "He will do anything to make things right."

Steve freezes. After a beat, he puts his finger to his ear. "Stark, come in," he says, his voice filled with urgency. "Stark? Anybody on comms?" His face falls as he lowers his hand back to his side.

"Ultron cannot tell the difference between saving the world and destroying it," Wanda says. "Where do you think he gets that?"

Steve lets out a long breath. "I have to find Stark."

"We," Wanda corrects him. "This is our fight, too."

Steve chuckles dryly. "I don't think so."

"If you want to stop Ultron, you cannot do it alone," Pietro says.

"I've seen his mind," Wanda says. "I know him."

"We can help."

Steve crosses his arms, narrowing his eyes as he looks between them, until finally, he sighs and says, "Fine. Come on." He gestures for them to follow him, but Pietro puts an arm out to stop him.

"First, we get our friend," Pietro says.

"A friend from HYDRA?" Steve guesses, and it's clear in his tone that he doesn't like that.

"What difference does it make?" Pietro asks. "He is our friend, and he is coming with us."

Steve clenches his jaw, eyeing them with distrust. He shakes his head to himself. "Fine. Go get your friend."

"No, we get him," Wanda says.

"What, Pietro can move a couple dozen people away from a train, but he can't carry your friend down here?" Steve asks skeptically.

"He does not like to go fast," Wanda tells him.

Steve lolls his head back, exasperated. "How far is he?"

"No more than a 15-minute walk," Pietro says.

"Well, maybe a little longer," Wanda says. Pietro's not exactly the best judge of walking distance.

"Alright, let's go," Steve says, though he's obviously not happy about it.

They start walking in silence, which is probably for the best. Wanda doesn't expect any conversation with an Avenger to go well. She's sure Pietro agrees.

After a few minutes, Steve finally asks, "Are you sure your friend is around here?"

"Yes," Pietro says simply.

Steve sighs. "Look, we don't have time for this. Go get him."

"I told you, he does not like to fast," Pietro says impatiently.

"Yeah, well, I don't like to go slow," Steve says.

Pietro narrows his eyes. "Fine." He grabs Steve with one arm and Wanda with the other, and in the blink of an eye, they're outside the shop they left him in.

Steve pushes Pietro away and slaps a hand over his heart, breathing heavily as he tries to readjust. "That is not what I meant!"

Pietro just shrugs, a smirk on his face. "Now we don't go slow."

Wanda shakes her head to herself, amused. She gestures for them to follow her. The building is as dark and abandoned as it had been when they'd brought Loki here. She slowly pushes the door open and glances around. They'd left Loki right by the door, but it seems he had other plans. She's not too worried. He wouldn't — couldn't — have gone far.

She steps inside, and Pietro follows close behind her. They split off, each taking different sides of the shop. Wanda calls his name just so he knows that it's them, and they move slowly through the building so they don't scare him.

"There's nobody here," Steve says, exasperated.

"He would not have left," Pietro says.

"There is literally nobody here," Steve says.

Wanda catches sight of him right where she'd expected to: the back corner of the store. He hugs his knees to his chest with his head propped up on them. He doesn't look as scared as she'd expected — no more than usual, at least. He looks more impatient than anything. It's oddly refreshing to see that.

"Pietro," Wanda says. She glances behind herself, and both Pietro and Steve make their way towards her. When she crouches down in front of Loki, he raises his head, so she rests a hand on his knee. "I told you we would come back."

Loki puts a hand on top of hers, and she smiles. She can feel the warmth in him, the relief that she's come back. She's not sure if it's her magic that tells her it or just the relationship they've formed, but she always feels that relief when they're reunited.

"Oh my god," Steve whispers.

Immediately, Loki tenses. His eyes widen and he tightens his grip on Wanda's hand, his gaze glued to Steve's face. Wanda glances at Steve, whose jaw has dropped.

"Loki?" Steve says quietly.

"You know him?" Pietro asks.

Steve just nods, silent. He takes a few slow steps forward, watching Loki carefully as he approaches. "What did they do to you?"

"Do not expect an answer," Wanda says. "Pietro?" She stands up and steps off to the side, and Pietro comes in and picks Loki up, just as he's done at least a dozen times over the last few days. It's become a quicker, smoother process, and Loki gets situated in his arms pretty easily.

"What are you doing?" Steve asks.

Pietro furrows his brows. "What do you mean?" he asks. "He is coming with us."

"No, I know that, but why are you..." Steve eyes Loki with a frown. "He doesn't walk?"

"No, he does not," Pietro says.

"Did he used to walk?" Wanda asks. "When you knew him?"

"He did a lot more than walk," Steve says. He looks at them curiously. "You really don't know who he is."

"Of course we do," Pietro says. "He is Loki, and he is our friend."

"Do you even know that he tried to take over the world?"

Wanda scoffs. "He would never!"

"Do you at least know that he's a god?" Steve asks.

Pietro chuckles dryly. "Loki is not a god."

"Yes, he is," Steve insists. "Or he was. I don't know the whole story; I don't know if he's still technically... But Thor's been looking for him for, god, a year and a half, almost."

Wanda furrows her brows. "Thor?"

Steve pinches the bridge of his nose, exasperated. "Okay, let's walk and talk."

Wanda and Pietro agree, so Steve takes the lead, bringing them to wherever it is the Avengers are meeting up. Wanda feels like she should be nervous or excited or something, but she's too distracted by thoughts of Loki. She hadn't realized he had a whole life before they met, that he used to do things. He used to be a god. She never would have thought...

"Loki's Thor's brother," Steve says. "Adopted, or something. And, from what Thor says, it sounds like he was a great guy, and then one day he just... lost it. He snatched the throne; he tried to destroy an entire realm —"

"You're lying," Wanda says immediately. "You're lying, or you were lied to, but you are wrong. Loki would not hurt anybody. He is the most gentle soul I have ever met."

"But he wasn't always—" Steve cuts himself off with the shake of his head. "Nevermind. Just — Loki is Thor's brother, and he belongs in Asgard with his people. It's better — it's safer — for everyone. That's all you have to know."

Wanda frowns. She looks over at Loki, and he still hasn't taken his eyes off of Steve. She can't tell if there's any familiarity in his gaze, but there definitely is fear. It's clear that Loki does not like or trust him any more than Wanda and Pietro do.

Wanda gently places a hand on his arm, and Loki finally tears his gaze away from Steve to look at her. She shakes her head, a small, almost imperceptible movement that she just has to hope he understands. They're not letting anybody take him away from them.
