Chapter 12

After a goodnight kiss and a promise to return soon, Frigga goes back to Asgard, leaving Wanda, Pietro, and Thor to put Loki to bed. Loki's half-asleep — he'd been entirely asleep until Frigga had to wake him up to say goodnight — so Pietro decides it's easier just to carry him to bed. Wanda brings the wheelchair with them anyway for tomorrow.

Tony shows them to Loki's new room, and he waits in the hall while Wanda and Pietro put Loki to bed. Thor stands in the doorway, watching but giving them space. Pietro lies Loki down in bed, and he curls up on his side, hugging his legs to his chest.

"Is this okay?" Pietro asks. "Are you comfortable?"

Loki doesn't respond.

"I will take that as a 'yes.'"

Wanda kneels down by the side of the bed, eye-level with the god. "Pietro and I will be across the hall," she tells him. "Try to rest. We will come back in the morning."

Loki just looks at her.

"Goodnight, Loki," she says quietly. She stands up and presses a kiss to his cheek.

When Wanda steps away, Pietro takes her place, kneeling down by Loki's side right where Wanda had been. "Sleep well," he says. "Enjoy your new big bed. It will be much more comfortable than the floor. I promise."

When they're sure that Loki's situated, they leave him be. They keep the door closed, blocking out any extraneous sounds that could bother him throughout the night. Then they all gather outside the door, next to not only Loki's room but the Maximoff's and Thor's, too. Thor insisted on staying near his brother, so their rooms are all adjacent to each other's. Wanda's not entirely sure it's a good idea to have Thor so close, but she gave up arguing pretty quickly. He's been pretty good about not hovering over them. She can at least give him this.

"And you guys are sure he's going to be okay in there alone," Tony says cautiously.

"He has always slept alone," Wanda says. "I do not know that he would want to change that."

"I think he will enjoy the quiet," Pietro adds.

"Do you think he would rather sleep with you?" Thor asks.

Wanda furrows her brows. "Did he not sleep alone when you knew him?" It's not the weirdest thing she's heard about what Loki used to be like, but she can't really imagine...

"Well, no, he did..." Thor says.

"Then there should be no problem," Wanda says. "Loki is used to being alone. It is not always a bad thing, and he will like the quiet while he sleeps." It's possible that she's wrong, but until this week, he'd always wake up when Wanda and Pietro were with him. She assumes that means he prefers to sleep alone, though it's possible he just wanted to make the most of their visits when they were with HYDRA. Hopefully they'll find out soon enough.

"Okay," Thor says. "I trust that you know what you're doing."

It's not long after that when they go their separate ways, and Wanda and Pietro check out their new bedroom. (Tony offered to give them separate rooms, but they've slept in the same room for nearly as long as they can remember. They're not going to give that up just because there are dozens of empty rooms in the tower.) It's right across the hall from Loki's, so she doesn't find herself at all worried, about him or themselves.

The twins both climb into their beds, and Wanda covers herself with a light blanket, not because it's cold but because she sleeps better when she has a blanket to cuddle with. She didn't realize how tired she was until she laid down. It's been a very long few days.

"I feel like I am inside the bed," Pietro says.

Wanda can't help but laugh at the absurdity of that statement. "What?"

"It is so soft," Pietro says. "I am sinking faster than the Titanic."

Wanda shakes her head to herself, an amused smile on her face. "Go to sleep, Pietro."

"It feels like a marshmallow."

"Pietro!" Wanda grabs her pillow from under her head and throws it at him.

"I would love another pillow," Pietro says, "thank you."

"Give me my pillow back!" Wanda whines.

Pietro slips the pillow under his head. "Oh, so comfortable."

"Pietro!" Wanda squeals.

Pietro laughs evilly, but he does throw her pillow back at her.

Wanda tucks her pillow under her head and curls up in bed. "Go to sleep, Pietro."

Pietro groans dramatically. "Fine."

Wanda closes her eyes, a small smile on her face. This is nice. This–

Thud.

Wanda bolts upright in bed. She looks at Pietro, eyes wide with worry. Was that...?"

"Loki," Pietro says, and then he's gone.

Wanda runs after him as quickly as she can, crossing the hall into Loki's room just as Thor does the same.

Loki is sitting on the floor next to his bed, his legs sprawled out in front of him. He seems fairly relaxed at first, but when he sees Thor, he tenses, quickly pulling his legs back in.

"What happened?" Wanda asks.

Pietro glances back at her. "I think he fell out of bed."

"Oh." Wanda frowns. "That must hurt."

Pietro shrugs. "He seems okay." He scoops Loki up and puts him back in bed. "Let's try this again." He leans down and kisses Loki's forehead. "Goodnight, Loki."

Wanda and Pietro leave the room, and Thor lingers a few seconds longer, watching his brother with a frown before he leaves as well, closing the door behind him. Then it's back to their respective rooms.

Wanda crawls back into her bed and snuggles up with her blanket again. Pietro does the same without a word, much to her relief. Maybe she can actually get some sleep this time.

Until a minute or two passes, and Pietro asks, "Were our old beds this soft? I do not think our old beds were this soft."

Wanda shoves her face in her pillow and groans. "Go to sleep, Pietro!"

Pietro just laughs.

Fortunately, Pietro does finally shut up, and Wanda closes her eyes. Her exhaustion hits her like a wave. She's going to sleep all day tomorrow, she swears. As annoying as he is, Pietro was right: this is such a comfortable bed.

Thud.

By the time Wanda sits up, Pietro is already out of the room. She sighs and follows him. Did he fall out of bed again? They need to find some way to fix that.

She's in less of a rush this time, so by the time she gets to Loki's room, both Pietro and Thor have beat her there. Once again, Loki is sitting on the floor, staring at Thor with fearful eyes. Pietro picks Loki back up and puts him in bed. This time, he tucks the blanket in, holding him down.

"You are very bad at this 'sleeping' thing," Pietro tells him. He kisses the top of Loki's head again. "Stay."

Wanda cracks a smile. "He is not a dog."

"No, he is not," Pietro agrees, giving Loki a pointed look. "If he was dog, he would stay."

Loki doesn't take his gaze off Thor, so the joke kind of falls flat.

"Goodnight, Loki," Pietro says.

They all head back to their rooms again.

Wanda sits down on the edge of her bed, her feet hanging over the side. Pietro is about to lie down, but when he notices Wanda sitting up, he does the same, looking at her curiously. He doesn't have to ask what's wrong. She tells him anyway.

"I worry for him," she says. "He is going to get hurt."

Pietro shakes his head helplessly. "What do you want to do?" he asks. "He needs to rest. We cannot take that from him."

"I know," Wanda says. "But he cannot rest if he is falling on the floor."

Pietro sighs. "If it happens again, we will figure something out. Right now, I would like to sleep."

Wanda scoffs. "I have been saying that for ten minutes and you did not want to sleep then!"

Pietro shrugs. "I wanted to annoy you more than I wanted to sleep."

Wanda rolls her eyes. "I do not like you."

Pietro smirks. "I love you, too."

Wanda lies down in bed and faces the wall, exaggerating her annoyance. She can hear him crawl into bed, too, and the noise stops once he gets situated. She closes her eyes. Time to try this again.

Thud.

"Oh my god," Pietro groans. He's out of the room before Wanda even turns around.

Wanda follows Pietro to Loki's room, where she finds him putting the mattress flat on the floor. He picks Loki up and lays him down on top of it, then covers him with a blanket, leaving the rest of the covers thrown haphazardly at the end of the bed frame.

Thor comes up behind her and looks over her shoulder. "What are you doing?"

"He cannot fall out of bed if his bed is on the floor," Pietro says.

Wanda shakes her head to herself. If this is what it takes to keep Loki from falling out of bed — and to finally let her sleep — then she won't complain.

While Pietro is getting Loki settled, she heads back to her room, crawling back into bed and closing her eyes. Finally, time to get some rest.
