"What Maya Does For Riley"
Riley's POV:
Sometimes I hate when Maya does stuff like this. Don't get me wrong, I love this girl, but she sometimes can just be a little too brave. That's why I didn't want to tell her that me and Lucas broke up, because I knew she would pretend to forget about all her pain and help me. She was really sweet and considerate to me all the time, but I've almost gotten over the fact that me and Lucas broke up. It's starting to actually feel real. That day that he dumped me, I didn't consider it real, I just sat there and cried, not even really focusing on what I was crying about. But each day I grow a little more thoughtful of it. And today I realized it was true. Lucas and I really did brake up. And Maya was going to do something about it. I don't think Lucas wanted me to tell Maya. But I did. And I'm pretty sure that this isn't going to turn out well.
"Maya, do we have to?" I cried, getting anxious when we were right near the entrance.
"Yes, we do, Riley. Why didn't you tell me sooner?" Maya asked, cautiously starting to pick up her pace.
"I knew you would do this..." I whispered.
She nodded. "I'm helping you."
"When you should be helping yourself." I said, as the turned to stare into my chestnut eyes. Her brows furrowed.
"What do you mean, Riles? Why should I be helping myself?"
"Because you really are short, Maya," I said. And her eyes suddenly locked on mine as she stood stiff and awkwardly.
"What?"
"You really are short, and dad-less, you know that!" I said, trying to sound as nice as possible.
"I have Shawn," she said, starting to walk into the room again.
"And you don't want to loose him, do you?" I asked her, making her stand still again.
She shuffled a little. "Of course not."
"And I have you, and I don't want to loose you to some...guy like Lucas," I can't believe I just said that.
Maya nodded. "Fine. Don't come in with me. But I'm handling this once and for all. Don't worry about it, okay?"
My shoulders hunched forward and I felt like throwing up. I nodded.
"I'll be right back," she warned, walking into the room and slamming the door behind her.
My anxiousness conveyed me over to the door where I could hear everything, I peered through the little window. Everyone's attention was on Maya so they didn't notice me. I saw staring. And then Maya started speaking.
"I can't believe you, Lucas," she said.
"What are you talking about?" He asked, although he looked like he knew, he was kind of smiling.
"I know what you did to Riley." She said.
I felt like throwing up again.
"Yeah, so?" Lucas said, starting to stand up and face Maya.
Even though I couldn't see it, I felt my face flush with fear. Maya looked over her shoulder and saw me in the window. I mouthed: Maya, no! But she ignored me and suddenly hooked her hands on his shoulders and yanked him over to the front of the room. She got really close to him. Too close.
I saw Lucas' face as red as a tomato and Maya whispering something to him, her eyes narrowed and giving him a very serious look. My dad just sat in the corner, watching them curiously. And suddenly, I saw Lucas grasp his hands onto Maya's cheeks and....
HE JUST KISSED HER.
