-Shawn-
I didn't think I could sleep.
I wanted to so badly.
I needed it and I knew Brooke would yell at me as soon as I got there.
She would surely see the prominent bags under my eyes and the odd spike of energy I would have from no sleep.
She always made fun of how whenever I was tired I would be energetic.
It never made sense to her.
Whenever she was tired all she wanted to do was have me hold her so she could sleep.
I wanted to hold her more than anything right now.
But she has a boyfriend.
Who's her boyfriend?
Chloe never even got to telling me because she got so sidetracked with-
"Shawn." She whispered. "Are you sleeping?"
"No." I whispered. "How could I?"
"It's 8:37." She whispered.
"Do you wanna go get some coffee in the cafeteria?"
"Yeah sounds good. I don't think I'll be getting any sleep."
We slowly made our way out of the car stretching upon hitting the pavement.
We made our way to the emergency room entrance since it was the only way we knew how to navigate through out the hospital.
People rushed around outside and we watched as several surgeons escaped through the automatic doors preparing for an incoming trauma.
The ambulance pulled up and the paramedics opened the back doors pulling out the stretcher.
"White female, late 40's, kidney failure in her left kidney and a broken rib." They read off.
I turned away not wanting to see the incoming woman.
I stuffed my face into Shawn and he wrapped his arm around me In a friendly way.
"Chloe." He spoke up as we neared the entrance.
"What?"
"I think you're gonna wanna see this."
"No Shawn I really don't. Hospitals freak me out enough as it is."
"Chloe."
"I said no Shawn stop trying to be funny."
Suddenly he stopped in his tracks causing me to stumble but quickly preventing anything further.
"Chloe!"
"What Shawn?" I yelled. "What could possibly be so important?!"
I turned to face the entrance to continue walking in.
The surgeons were rushing around the incoming woman.
"I need a crash cart!" Someone yelled.
A crash cart.
Suddenly everything was a blur.
The surgeons rushing around her.
Shawn saying my name behind me.
The woman on the bed.
Not just any woman.
A woman I knew very well.
Suddenly it made sense.
Late 40's.
Brooke's mother got pregnant young.
Kidney failure.
Kidney cancer.
The surgeons cleared out and I watched as the woman's chest very faintly fell up and down.
"Let's get her into surgery!" Someone yelled.
The face.
The blonde brown hair swept across the forehead.
Brooke's mother.
"Oh, no." I breathed.
"Oh, no."
Then another body emerged in the blur.
Another familiar body.
Spiked brown hair.
Stubbly face.
"What did you do to her?!" Shawn screamed.
His pace quickened as he neared Leo in the front of the hospital.
Leo turned around a smug look on his face.
"You know it's funny you think you're actually a part of this." He said.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"It means that the woman I love is dying my daughter is in a coma and you think that beating me up is gonna help them."
"It will when they wake up."
"What if they don't?" He questioned.
There was a moment of silence as I walked up behind Shawn and placed my hand on his upper arm.
"They will." I stated.
Shawn raised his fist more ready to punch.
"Shawn." I whispered. "He's not worth it."
His fist slowly lowered.
My arm fell down his and we began to walk away.
"That's right Shawnie boy walk away."
"You know what!" He screamed rushing towards him.
"Shawn!" I screamed.
He looked back at me fury in his eyes.
"You know Shawn-" Leo spoke up. "If I were you I wouldn't be flirting with my ex-girlfriends best friend. It's bad for the relationship." He paused. "No offense sweetheart." He winked.
"If you don't mind I'm gonna go check on my daughter."
"You're not her father." I scowled.
"You know with the convenience of the hospital recently, we can get a DNA test to convince your tiny little mind."
He paused.
"But perhaps with the thought of being in love with a girl who's not yours and being on tour and abandoning her and flirting with her best friend because there's just no one else to love you and give you what you need in life is already too much for your brain to handle."
And again life became a blur.
Shawn's fist collided with Leo's face.
Leo stumbled backwards and then stood straight.
He began to usher Shawn forward with his fists raised.
"No Shawn stop!" I exclaimed.
"Just one more Chlo." He smirked. "Come on..."
A smug look appeared on his face and for a moment he wasn't Shawn anymore.
"You know you've always wanted to do it."
I looked down holding up 1 single finger.
Shawn turned to face Leo but before he could raise his fist or hand Leo's fist collided with Shawn's face.
Before Shawn could get another punch in a man in scrubs came out and pulled Leo away with them.
Shawn held his face in his hand for a moment before tapping it with his fingers to check for blood.
His fingers came back empty except for near his lip.
Blood oozed out front his bottom lip.
"Come on we can clean you up." I ushered.
"No." He said through gritted teeth. "Just take me to Brooke."
"You don't want coffee first?"
"No I need to make sure that ass that calls himself her father doesn't touch her."
