16. PITY PARTY
One week had passed since the disappearance of Brighton Valley's 'it' boy Chad Santino. April's lead led the authorities to have more questions than answers, and nobody had seen a glimpse of the boy in any state. Though Lisa put out posters (with the help of April) of her son's possible changes in appearance, nothing came in. It was almost as if he'd vanish into thin air – which only two people knew was not the case.
April and Mark's relationship began becoming sour, as she noticed how he preferred to console his ex-wife as opposed to spending time with his 'lover'. Of course, the teen wasn't going to say anything – otherwise she would be the bad guy, so instead she spent her days putting up 'MISSING' posters around town, pressuring the police department to find more leads, staying cooped up in her bedroom, or visiting her best friend and accessory to murder – Jason Lahey.
She figured it would be best to meet up in public places, as the girl feared they'd bugged his house without their knowledge, and it was becoming very obvious how paranoid April felt about everything. Everywhere she'd go, her head would turn over her shoulder every five minutes in fear that a police officer was following her, hoping she would do something shady which would be blown out of proportion in court.
At home, she began wondering her motive for killing Chad. She had a hard time determining whether it was because he hurt her both emotionally and physically, or whether it was because he almost broke Jason's nose off his face. Perhaps both, but that was something April had yet to figure out. She thought going through with her actions would cause less damage than it really did. The girl pondered to herself; did I do it because of spontaneity, or was I subconsciously planning this all along? Those thoughts started to consume her, wondering whether she was insane for killing someone who'd hurt her immensely, or if she was a hero for getting rid of the scum that had been plaguing the town for years.
Tonight was Chad's 80's themed vigil, something that felt more like a combination of a cliché New Year's party and a charity event. Everyone had arrived to the party dressed like it was the 80's, including some who thought the event was well-suited for every dollar-store version of Halloween costumes.
April wore an over-sized denim jacket she borrowed from Jason, something that was very rare as the blonde held that piece of clothing closer than a mother and her infant. She'd paired the look with mom jeans and black high-top Converse. Her hair had been teased, harboring more hairspray than a Schwarzkopf ad. The girl's makeup was dark, wanting to go for the grunge era of the 80's, which made the night a bit more bearable as this was her usual aesthetic, though exaggerated heavily.
The event was taking place in Mark's backyard, having invited a limited number of people, though Lisa didn't shy away from inviting almost half the town. It was questioned whether the woman had developed Munchhausen, or if she thought that her son would actually want all of this. Everyone gathered together in his father's backyard, dressed up in their 80's inspired outfits, jamming along to 80's music while holding charity-event like auctions on things Mark kept in his storage. It was obvious what the answer was if he'd actually gone missing – Chad would have been furious, but that didn't stop Lisa from lightly tapping the mic, gaining everybody's attention.
"I would just like to thank everyone for attending. It's been a hard week for all of us, including Mark and I. Though our relationship isn't what it used to be, we are thankful that the only good thing that came out of our son's disappearance was the bond my ex-husband and I developed." Lisa emotionally stated, her voice echoing throughout the yard of people stopping to listen to her words.
A lot people had mixed feelings about this, some were delighted to know that the iconic duo had set their differences aside and gotten back together, and others were disgusted that Lisa was not only airing out her dirty laundry with her ex-husband, but was partially thankful for her son's disappearance bringing the two of them together. 'Others' was a pseudonym for Jason and April – who looked at the woman with an evident grimace.
Though Jason was upset, April felt her heart shatter to a million pieces. 'Does this mean they're getting back together?' she wondered, biting her lip nervously as she sipped her drink. She was clearly uncomfortable throughout the whole night, Lisa's words repeating themselves in her mind like a broken record player that wouldn't stop spinning. It was hard to just 'forget' her words, not to mention the thirty five day relationship she'd been in with Mark. Sure, it wasn't long but it still meant something to her, even if it didn't to him.
Jason glanced over at the girl, seeing how her face screamed 'distraught'. He immediately knew what her change of mood was about – not feeling too bad for her, considering he'd warned her about getting too attached to Mark. The blonde knew him, he would treat his hook-ups like dolls, only playing with them when he was bored. Although it was tempting to advise April and tell her 'I told you so', he knew it wasn't the appropriate time to do so.
The night had finally come to a close, and April was now cooped up in her room while the duo were downstairs having dinner. The teen ate hers in her room, having quietly placed her empty dishes and cup in the sink before walking back upstairs. She stared at the wall blankly, desperate to confront Mark about their relationship, but not knowing how to do so without sounding like a desperate side-chick.

Jason walked into an empty house. Half of his furniture had been sold, leaving him with an air mattress he used in the living room, along with a flat stool that replaced his plain, wooden nightstand. The man sat down on his makeshift bed, shrugging off his leather jacket. His hand brushed through his hair before he got up and went into the kitchen, opening the drawer and retrieving a small piece of tin foil, followed by a spoon an unopened syringe.
He felt guilty holding those items in his hands, shaking with a mixture of fear and withdrawal symptoms. He opened up the plastic packaging of the syringe, carefully disassembling it before opening up the tin foil. Jason dropped its contents onto the spoon, retrieving a lighter which was laying aside his bed and cautiously heated the underside of the utensil, gently pouring the liquid into the syringe before putting its plunger back on.
Tonight, he didn't need to find a vein since he'd began developing entry marks on his arms, being very cautious when being around his counselor and other people. The blonde pushed up his sleeve, pursed his lips before carefully inserting the needle into the entry mark from last night, pushing the syringe so its contents would enter his bloodstream. His head threw itself back in pleasure, slowly beginning to feel euphoric after a stressful night, at least that's what his mind told him. He fell onto his back, sighing in relief.
