Four
The next day, at the police station
The officers sat in front of a table piled high with various items that had once belonged to the Clemans. Naturally, they were all incriminating in nature. But only three items were of interest to Officer Pherson. First, the scientific research that Don and Zey had done. Second, the camera that was found in the Clemans' laboratory. Third, a reel of film, found by Myrae in the filing cabinet.
Officer Pherson turned to Dr. Seinman, the head of the lab at the Police Station. "What have you found out?"
"We have actually discovered a number of things," the scientist said in a thick, german accent.
"Go on," Officer Pherson said.
"Let's begin with the reel of film." The Scientist picked up a remote control laying on the table and pressed a button. The wall in front of them was filled with a video. It took a moment for the officer to realize where it was—the Uranium Bank.
The screen showed the main Uranium vault. Two figures appeared on the screen, creeping down the hallway, their faces were concealed by ski masks. The clock, sitting on the wall, displayed the time as being a quarter past midnight—significantly past the guard change. Zey, the explosives expert, started wiring the door while Don stayed as the look-out, a gun ready in his hand.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed down the hall. The shadow of a guard loomed around the corner. The guard gasped as he caught a glimpse of the intruders.
Alarms blared. And the film went blank.
Officer Pherson stared in disbelief.
"I-it's the same as the footage from the bank's surveillance camera."
"It is," Dr. Seinman affirmed.
"But how?"
"We don't know. But we have a theory that it has something to do with that camera. We found a place for film to be placed inside the camera, enabling the film to record whatever the camera is viewing. The puzzling part is that upon analyzing the camera, we have discovered that it is able to see into a person's brain."
"See into a person's brain?" Officer Pherson shouted.
"Yes."
"How?"
"It's actually quite brilliant. The camera uses a combination of highly specialized MRI technology and film camera negatives. The MRI is able to detect the movement of neurons in the mind's eye. The movement and pattern of protons formed in the neurological cells allows the MRI to capture images. It takes a fraction of a second for the images to be captured by the camera, which compiles it into a reel of film. Once all of the imaging is compiled into the film reel, it can be played back on a normal projecting."
Pherson stared at Dr. Seinman, wide-eyed. "It's ingenious, simply ingenious."
"Truly."
"But what does all this mean?"
The scientist removed his oversized spectacles. "It's difficult to say..." He paused for a moment, staring into empty space.
"Did you learn anything through Myrae's medical examination?" Officer Pherson finally asked.
"As a matter of fact, we did. But first, I must explain what the Clemans' research project was." The scientist flipped screens. "Upon reading through the many journals, files, and binders of information, I have discovered that the Clemans' know of a way to make a person see into the future."
Pherson's jaw dropped. The Professor turned on the screen, showing the picture of an elderly man in a white lab coat standing outside of the Institute of BioTechnology.
"This man is Dr. Hans Rupert. He passed away in 2041, but he spent the majority of his life doing extensive research on the functions of the brain. What he discovered was that the subconscious is capable of seeing into the future. Right now, every single human being has the genes that allows one to see into the future. However, those genes lie in dormancy for ninety-nine point nine-repeating percent of the population. Thus, most people are unable to harness the full potential of the mind. However, Don and Zey figured out a way to unlock those genes in human beings. And that's where Myrae comes in."
"She can see into the future," Officer Pherson stated.
"Correct. Her DNA has been edited to unlock her subconscious mind. The tea that Myrae was given was chemically formulated to stimulate the future seeing compounds in her body. It also acted as a sedative, so that Myrae could access her subconscious mind."
"I can hardly believe it," the officer marveled, shaking his head. "Things are actually starting to make sense.
"Is there enough evidence to convict Don and Zey now?" Scott asked.
"I believe so," Dr. Seinman said. "Myrae found the research, the money, and the films showing the bank robberies. Naturally, the jury will decide their ultimate fate, but I think we have a solid case against them."
"That's it then," Officer Scott declared. "The case is solved."
"Not quite," Officer Pherson said.
"What do you mean?"
Officer Pherson's face grew very solemn. "We still don't know what to do about Myrae."
"I feel sorry for that girl," the scientist said.
"Her parents don't seem to have even the slightest care for her. They probably only see her as a machine, something that can allow them to see the future, and nothing more."
"Her mother said that Myrae would have amounted to nothing if it weren't for them," Officer Pherson commented, his voice laced with anger.
"That's absurd!" Officer Scott exclaimed.
"I know," Officer Pherson said. "Well, it looks as though we'll just have to find Myrae a new family. One that will actually care for her. The poor girl needs it."

Myrae sat in the Dining Hall, waiting for Mrs. Luop. Myrae liked the jolly old woman who had been assigned to take care of her. Her presence was comforting in a time in which everything in Myrae's life seemed to be falling apart.
Myrae took a sip of juice. It was quite good. Mrs. Luop had told her that it was orange juice. Myrae was unfamiliar with it, though she could have sworn that she'd had it before. It was familiar, a distant taste from years prior.
Myrae watched the orange liquid slosh around in her cup. It was pretty. But as she stared, the liquid began to lighten in color, turning to a clear liquid. The plastic cup was gone too, replaced with a ceramic mug.
"Drink it."
Myrae gasped. The scene was gone. She was back in the dining hall.
"Where's your homework?" a voice demanded.
"I don't have any!"
The voices echoed in her head. What's going on? Myrae thought. What's happening to me?!
The image of a girl in a pink dress waltzed into Myrae's head.
"Want to come to my birthday party?"
Is...is that the girl from the bus?
The voices filled her head, making it spin. Faces shrouded her mind, familiar and unfamiliar. She felt herself floating as scenes played through her mind.
"What does the teacher mean?"
"What are these grades?"
"Want to play with me?"
"Drink the tea."
"Drink the tea."
"DRINK THE TEA!"
"Stop!" Myrae screamed. The vision dissipated. She was back in the dining hall, alone. Myrae panted, her heart rate beating at a million miles an hour.
"What's wrong, deary?"
Myrae turned to see Officer Luop behind her. She sighed, slumping in her chair. What's wrong with me?
"Nothing," Myrae whispered.
Officer Luop stared kindly at the girl. "Oh, well, come along then. We have someone here to meet you."
Myrae took the woman's hand. For a moment, the young girl's vision tunneled. She could feel herself holding someone else's hand, while crossing the street....
Myrae's eyes snapped open. In front of her was a couple, smiling down at her.
"Myrae," Officer Luop said. "Meet your new parents."
